21.01.2022 She stands precisely 5ft tall in her everyday shoes and her smile is disarmingly sweet. Kate Nesbitt doesn't immediately fit the image of a fearless military h...ero, not off the battlefield at least. But there are probably few people a critically injured soldier would rather meet in the chaos of a desert gunfight than this 21-yearold blonde in full flight. Bravery: Kate Nesbitt receives the Military Cross from the Prince of Wales during investitures at Buckingham Palace in London. And the sight of her sprinting through an Afghan war zone under heavy machine gun fire is almost certainly one that Lance Corporal John List will remember for the rest of a life he now owes to her astonishing display of courage Kate, a medical assistant serving as an Able Seaman with the Royal Navy, raced 70 yards to the stricken soldier's side as he nearly choked to death from a gunshot wound to the mouth. She cut open a temporary airway and treated him for 45 minutes as rockets whizzed overhead and bullets thudded into the ground nearby. Yesterday her 'inspirational' bravery was rewarded at Buckingham Palace when she became the Navy's first woman to be invested with the Military Cross. Then, with a few modest words, she underlined the remarkable spirit of loyalty that bonds Britain's servicemen and women on the front line. 'I promised my friends and comrades I'd be their medic,' she said. 'I promised I'd be there if they ever needed me. They needed me that day - so when the call came, that's just what I did.' Kate, from Whitleigh, Plymouth, stepped into the history books as only the second woman to be awarded the MC, one of Britain's highest gallantry awards, as well as becoming the only MC Wren. Presenting her award, the Prince of Wales bowed to what he called her 'extraordinary' heroism. Her citation read: 'Under fire and under pressure her commitment and courage were inspirational and made the difference between life and death.' My UTMOST RESPECT young lady.

20.01.2022 This is the DEATH MASK of a young woman who drowned in the River Seine in the 1880's. As was customary in those days, her corpse was put on display in the Paris... mortuary, in the hope that someone might recognize her and claim her body. The pathologist on duty became entranced by the girl with the enigmatic half-smile, and so he commissioned a plaster cast made of her face. This mask was replicated many times over. She became known as "L'Inconnue de la Seine, or The Unknown Woman of the Seine. In 1955, a toy maker named Asmund Laerdal created what we now know as the CPR doll. Asmund wanted his mannequin to have a natural appearance. Remembering a mask on the wall of his grandparents' house many years earlier, he decided that the L'Inconnue de la Seine would become the face of Resusci Anne. So you see, this anonymous woman who drowned in the 19th century is responsible for saving many, many lives the world over. It is said that she has the most kissed face of all time. I hope you enjoyed this little #histmed tale! Credit: The Chirurgeon's Apprentice

15.01.2022 Paramedics as prescribing practitioners Complementing the recent post about the Welsh Ambulance Service welcoming its first three prescribing paramedics comes f...urther news showing the significance of a registered profession whose advanced practitioners hold prescribing rights. https://bit.ly/2YWv3Aa The Wokingham Today newsletter has reported that Spencer Winch, an advanced paramedic practitioner at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading has become one of the UK's first accredited paramedic independent prescribers. https://bit.ly/2XL9XId Spencer works in the Emergency Department at the hospital which said that the move will have a big impact on the busy Emergency Department by speeding up treatment for patients. It's another example of the way in which appropriately qualified paramedics can work across many domains of health. Under arrangements for prescribing, paramedics must be practising at an advanced level of clinical practice, as defined by Health Education England, NHS England, NHS Improvement and the Allied Health Professions professional bodies. A paramedic prescriber must be registered by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), with an annotation signifying they have successfully completed an approved programme of preparation and training for independent and supplementary prescribing. Health Education England (Wessex) has prepared a useful summary on paramedic prescribing which you can access here: https://bit.ly/2NWkgVo Read the FAQ as a flipbook: http://online.fliphtml5.com/eeyoy/slbv/ For more details on paramedic prescribing within the NHS in the UK go to https://bit.ly/2JIJOA7

03.01.2022 Congratulations to all who did well in this great event and well done to all who participated. Special mention to the Goldfields (St Ives) crew who did extremely well in this comp. Miramar can attest to the amount of hard work, training and the grueling hours the St Ives crew put into getting this great result.
