24.01.2022 SELENIUM// Did you know that selenium is very low in Australian soil, meaning that it is very common to be deficient in it? Selenium is extremely important for hormonal health, especially when it comes to the function of your thyroid. It is also important for progesterone production and assists with the elimination of excess oestrogen from the body. I will often prescribed selenium in clinic to assist in conditions such as PMS, premenstrual spotting, uterine fibroids, endom...etriosis, heavy periods, and breast pain. Food sources for selenium include brazil nuts, shellfish, eggs, fish, tinned salmon and sardines, and cashews!

20.01.2022 ZINC// What a mineral! It is a co-factor for more than 300 enzymes and proteins. Big job! I like zinc because it's very important for skin health and optimal hormone function. It plays a vital role in the synthesis and metabolism of hormones. It's involved in the synthesis of oestrogen and progesterone and transporting them around the body. Zinc is also used in egg production, ovulation and fertilisation. It also reduces inflammation, stimulates the immune system, is an antio...xidant and assists wound healing (hence, the skin health factor). How can you include zinc in your diet? Easy! The following foods are high in zinc and can be added to your daily diet in many ways - pepitas, sunflower seeds, egg yolks, capsicum, ginger, whole grains, and seafood (oysters, herrings). Stress, physical exercise, pregnancy, poor appetite, veganism, viral infections and wounds all increase the demand for this nutrient so add it in to your diet whenever you can. Supplementing zinc is also an option if required. Speak to your health care practitioner for the best advice

17.01.2022 Naturopathy balances the body out so that illness is less likely to occur in the future//

16.01.2022 TURN TO TURMERIC// Turmeric is an age-old medicinal herb in India and has long been considered a wonder spice for everything from inflammation to indigestion. It can help the body handle cholesterol and it's fantastic for balancing hormones. In naturopathy, turmeric is often used to support liver health due to its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, as well as assisting to decrease inflammation and pain in conditions like endometriosis, uterine fibroids, perio...d pain, headaches, backaches, joint pain and digestive dysfunction. Turmeric spice can be added to smoothies, chai lattes (turmeric lattes), sprinkled over roast veggies, added to curries or even your breakfast eggs. For a more therapeutic effect however, a supplemental form may be of more benefit. Be sure to discuss what's best for you with your health care practitioner!

13.01.2022 Do you suffer from acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis or perhaps another skin condition? Can't find that elusive skin cleanser or product that promises to take all your problems away? Do you know that your skin is affected by much more than the products you put on it? Your skin responds to what is happening in your gut, your immune system, your hormones, what stress is in your life and how well you are sleeping and moving. In your body EVERYTHING is connected and works togethe...r, synergistically, so to get a clear understanding of a person’s health, you have to look at that person holistically. You have to consider dietary habits, lifestyle, history, and work and home environments. This is where a naturopath can help. We nut it out and get to the nitty gritty of the underlying causes of your skin concerns. We build firm foundations using herbal and nutritional medicine, and encourage healthier eating and lifestyle habits to kick start your body's natural healing abilities. A few simple changes can make a big difference when it comes to skin health! Book here > https://naturopathappointments.as.me/MiriamConnelly

10.01.2022 GELATIN & HORMONES// This may sound silly to some but eating gelatin (real gelatin, not the processed kind found in many commercial desserts and lollies) can work wonders to naturally balance your hormones. It is packed with calcium, magnesium, and phosphate - minerals that promote healthy digestion and hormone production. So eat more of it! Be sure to buy gelatin that is certified free from harmful chemicals, as some such toxins found in processed food actually mimic hormones and may further disrupt an already unbalanced endocrine system.

08.01.2022 I love herbal medicine and the herb Withania would have to be one of my favourites It is also known as Ashwaganda, and has so many nourishing actions on the body. It offers great adrenal support, modulates your immune system, decreases inflammation, assists iron building nutrients and status, reduces the effects of stress, helps insomnia... the list goes on! I often include it in my patients formulas because it is so regenerative and calm, which many of us need!

07.01.2022 BREATHE// Doing fifteen minutes of deep belly breathing twice daily has been shown in several clinical trials to decrease hot flushes and night sweats, as well as improve an individual's sense of well-being. It helps decrease stress hormones and allows the body to function efficiently.

04.01.2022 Did you know that maintaining a healthy weight can help to balance your hormones? Excessive adipose (fat) tissues can act as an endocrine organ, producing more oestrogen in the body. By maintaining a healthy weight, your body is not stimulated to overproduce certain hormones. Ensure you are moving our body daily through a mixture of high and low intensity exercises and eating a macro-balanced. These are the first steps to take when wishing to maintain a healthy weight. Prioritising sleep is also an important step.

03.01.2022 PHYTOESTROGENS// These are plant-based substances that can help balance your hormones naturally. They are found in soy foods, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, bean sprouts, and legumes such as chickpeas.

03.01.2022 The skin is our largest organ and whatever comes into contact with its thin outer layer is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. The toxic chemicals used in many products like your cleanser, face masks, body scrub, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and anything else you use on your body, can disrupt hormone function and place a burden on your organs, particularly the liver and kidneys. Look for brands that use only natural and preferably organic ingredients, and embrace the recyc...led packaging options to avoid plastics, too. My absolute favourite skin care range is naturopathically formulated and all organic. It's called Nushka Skin Care (see pic attached) and I love it because I know every ingredient in the products and therefore know that I'm placing gentle and skin nourishing things on my face No chemicals here thanks! Shoot me a message if you'd like to know more about these products

02.01.2022 SKIN LOVING HERB// Gotu Kola If I was a herb, this is the one I'd want to be and here's why: - Vulnerary actions - it's a fantastic would healer! It helps to improve detoxification and aids elimination to reduce the accumulation of metabolic waste products within the body. Another good action on the integumentary and lymphatic system to get your skin looking and feeling better. - Adaptogenic & Nervine Tonic - does your skin respond negatively to stress and anxiety?
