I tried out one of the soft backing pads on my Deros today, and now I’m wondering how I ever got by without them in the past. Here I’m cleaning up some orange peel with a 400 grit Abranet pad, and easing back on the rpm’s with my palm. So easy.

20.01.2022 #repost @templeguitars I don’t know how I ever got by without this in the past! A really common issue with past sanders I’ve used, was the vibration. So much so, that it could actually tilt the machine, causing gouging unless I was super careful. The black lever on the top of the Deros is an accelerator, so I can adjust the speed of the unit easily, without losing contact/grip with the sander. And even when I’m using it at full speed, the vibration is minimal. (I think the l...ow profile design really helps also). Even with power and dust ports attached, I can easily control the Deros one-handed, which leaves my other hand free to do important tasks like eating nachos. 06.01.2022 #repost @templeguitars I’ve received quite a few messages about doing a #YouTube #video about how I prepare wood for finish, so as this build has been progressing, I’ve been shooting footage. There are a few tricks that aren’t intuitively obvious, so if you’re one of those seeking tips, when it’s done you can watch me... sand for ages. I love that part of a build though, blending the roundovers into the belly carve, and tapering them toward the neck pocket. For a Tele sty...le guitar, this one has a surprising amount of angles. And there are so many things that can go terribly wrong- luckily none of them did. Slowly slowly, that’s how we do it. It’s not as sexy as the ten billion finish sanding videos out there, where you end up with a glossy buffed instrument, but if you’re starting out, this is part of the foundation of your knowledge. Of course it wouldn’t be a sanding video without my awesome #Mirka setup. It’s so great to have a tool that does exactly what you need it to, every time you reach for it. On the bench today, a 30 year old korina (or limba) wood explorer, that has been the victim of a million luthiery-related experiments over the years. Its had body curves added to the back, a neck heel transition carved in, a Floyd Rose pocket routed out, the scratchplate thrown away, the neck... pickup cavity sealed up, the front wiring channel sealed, and the broken off headstock reattached. Its also had 4 layers of finish applied at different times, and todays job is to get them off! As much as I love this wood, I plan on giving it an epoxy bath and sanding it all flat for a new (properly applied) colour. 03.01.2022 This is how you fit your hose sleeve on a Mirka Dust Extractor. 1. Open the velcro strap of the cord sleeve. 2. Fully open the zipper of the cord sleeve 3. Ins...ert the end of the vacuum hose into the sleeve and pull it through. 4. Take the power cord and insert it through the pocket inside the sleeve. 5. Zip the sleeve carefully, making sure the cord wont get caught in the zipper. 6. Guide the power cord through the pocket in the other end 7. 01.01.2022 Mirka Solid Surface High Gloss Process This is how you can sand and polish a solid surface and get a high gloss finish. 1. Align Novastar P320 abrasive on the backing pad of your Mirka DEROS 650CV... 2. Start sanding carefully in logical movements 3. Change the abrasive to a Novastar P500 4. Sand again and clean surface between steps 5. Moving to damp sanding, fit vacuum block 6. Fit the Abralon Grit 1000 abrasive on the vacuum block 7. Spray both the surface and abrasive with water. Decrease the speed so the water doesnt splash 8. Sand again and clean surface between steps 9. Change the abrasive to Abralon Grit 3000 10. Spray both the surface and abrasive with water and sand and clean again 11. Time for polish: Fit lambswool pad on the machine 12. Apply Polarshine 10 compound moderately, shake the bottle before use 13. Spread out the polish on the surface, do not use too much polish 14. Set the machine to around 1000-1500 rpm 15.
