15.01.2022 Today is International Day of Families, so we thought we would mark the day by sharing with you one of our Eye and Ear family stories. Few families have had mad...e such a difference to the hospital as that of Eye and Ear’s Director of Emergency, Associate Professor Carmel Crock’s. Carmel’s kindness and passion for what she does along with the excellent patient care she provides is well-known. On a day dedicated to families we thought it appropriate to both thank Carmel and point to her long family tradition of helping peopleone of her sisters is Professor Catherine Crock AM a doctor at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Founder of the Hush foundation whose mission is to transform the culture of health care through the Arts. The Eye and Ear is like a family, too. Our work family has really looked after us all during this pandemic. says Carmel. Their late father was distinguished spinal surgeon Dr Henry 'Harry' Crock AO at St Vincent’s and his twin brother was Professor Gerard Crock AO, which brings us full circle back to the Eye and Ear. ‘Prof’ as he was universally known in the hospital, was just 34, when he was appointed Australia’s first Professor of Ophthalmology, when the University of Melbourne established the Department of Ophthalmology at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in 1963. Uncle Gerard was well known for his innovations in surgical techniques and instruments, but equally for his gentle and kind nature, treating everyone as if they were a family member stated Carmel From our Eye and Ear family to yours, Happy International Day of Families. #CERA #UniMelb #RCH #StVincents #Hospitals #PatientCare #HushFoundation #Crocksrock
15.01.2022 None of us have been able to play frisbee for a while. But that's ok, it gives us a chance to focus on other things. My Greatest Ultimate Bag has still been extremely useful to me, while I've been in this different phase of life. Come along with me on the morning rounds and I'll show you how... 03.01.2022 #throwbackThursday Ten years ago, on this day, two of the best things in my life happened. 1. We won the gold medal. But I was so exhausted from the tournament that I really only felt relief that it was over. After this catch I basically lay on the ground under a heap of my teammates until coach Anna Rogacki pulled me out. I played cards in my room that night and went to bed early. Three days later, while travelling around Italy with my mum, I suddenly realised what we'd achi...eved. Unfortunately, all my teammates that I should have celebrated with had gone home! 2. I made friends with my opponent in the pink bucket hat, Yukari Kobori. Three years later I was playing on her team in Japan, and we've been friends and bestsisters ever since. Yukari was the beginning of a bridge between Japanese and Australian ultimate that has seen many teams go over to Dream Cup, a World Games showcase event in Australia, and many intercultural friendships. I feel very honoured to have been part of a gold medal winning team. I feel very honoured to have been so warmly welcomed into the Japanese community over the years.
