I’m collecting blankets, sleeping bags, warm jackets, hygiene items (tampons, pads, deodorant, soap) hats, socks for the homeless, struggling and those in need to be donated to One Meal at Sutherland. If you have any of the above for men or women please drop them off to me at Taren Point Swim School this week Tuesday - Friday 8:00-10:00. If you can’t get there between those hours leave it behi...nd the desk and I’ll get it the next day. 22.01.2022 So after a week away enjoying the sun and swimming with our gorgeous girl this week, it came to my attention the general public is desperately in need of some g...uidance around interacting with kids with disabilities and their families. I will premise this is just how I feel, but perhaps others feel the same... 1. First and foremost they're just kids. They just want to play with your kids. They may think you're funny and want to interact. It's really as simple as that. 2. Mums and dads - if we arrive at a pool, park etc. and you suddenly corral your kids with "we've just finished" or "kids it's time to go and get a snack". We know what you're doing. We see you. You're nervous your kid is going to be rude and would rather avoid it altogether. Seriously my family can clear a pool in five minutes. 3. If your child is staring, take the lead. Say hello. She may say hello or she may ignore you, but you've shown your kids what to do. I swear I can count on one hand how many kids said hello to Lucy this week and we encountered up to a hundred in the resort. I love those kids, they warm my heart. 4. If your child is being rude and running away, laughing, pointing, staring with an ugly face, intervene and quietly pull them away and tell them that's rude. You'd do it if they did it to a neurotypical kid! Don't run away from this opportunity to show them the right way to interact. This world will never get better for people with disabilities if we don't teach people to respect. 5. She sees everything and she hears everything. I hear it and I see it. I have the world's best poker face but the family sees it all. We push it down to the deepest parts of our hearts because if we acted on this, we would be arrested repeatedly. 6. Don't be scared to talk to me, ask me a question. The most wonderful young mum came to talk to me in the pool, turned out she had grown up with a young man with CP and wanted to know about Lucy. After having Lucy be ignored for two days by everyone, it felt so good to be seen. 7. We're totally jealous of all the parents sitting around the pool/park chatting without having to watch like a hawk. Lucy took her seizures to a new level this week with one in the pool, so our safe space of putting on her floaties and letting her play is now out the window. We're exhausted having to watch all the time. There's never a moment outside the house we're not having to watch. And she's 12 years old - we've been watching her obsessively for 12 years. Not great for your mental health. 8. On that note, feel free to offer some help. I'll let you know if I'm okay, but I'll also let you help if you can. When I'm trying to get Lucy out of a hard physical situation, I would love someone to offer help at least. I was struggling to get her out of a pool and 15 people sat and watched me. On that note, because we're having to be so vigilant maybe offer to get them a coffee? I would have killed for a margarita from the pool bar but just couldn't take my eyes off her to make that happen. I know it can be hard with kids, I get it, really. But imagine if that was your child that you saw ignored and run away from over and over again. You would want it to change for her in some way. I've made this public, feel free to share.

10.01.2022 This is too close to home. In Gymea and it could happen to any of us. Please sign the petition. Hi All Four weeks ago Vodafone/Optus told us they are planning to build a 3metre high mobile phone base station on an existing telegraph pole on our grass council strip - 10 metres from our house!! In addition, a 3.8m x 2.1m equipment shelter next to an existing electrical substation next to our neighbour’s home!! Under State & Federal Law, this is legal & local council have no sa...y as it’s not a Development Application. At the moment, any existing telegraph pole anywhere, is a potential mobile phone tower & we’d love to change the law on this so it doesn’t happen anywhere else. We have a petition up & running with the House of Representatives in Canberra. This petition is against Telecommunication carriers having the ability to install mobile phone stations on existing telegraph poles without a Development Application with the local Council. The link is below. It’s open for 4 weeks only....It’d be great to get your signatures. We’d love for this to go absolutely viral......so please after you sign it, forward on to everyone you know using the words we’ve used here & please ask them to sign & do the same. Feel free to copy the link with these instructions & put on Social Media (Facebook) , send to your friends, work colleagues etc.... http://www.aph.gov.au//Petitions_General/Sign_an_e-petition Instructions are - click on the link type in EN0323 in the search click on ‘sign’ on the right hand side Enter in your details (name & email address), tick the box & click on Sign an email is then sent to your address straight away with another link click on that when it arrives & you’re done Thanks for your support.....
10.01.2022 For the first time in history NSW Ambulance Paramedics are considering serious industrial action. We feel this is the only thing that will get our case heard. We are considering decreasing our response capacity to only respond to a true emergency and life threatening cases only for a period of 24hrs. We are the lowest paid paramedics in the country. The NSW state government gave us a pay cut last year to thank us for our service during COVID and are now offering us an 11 cent... an hour pay increase this year. How very generous. So here is a comparison in real terms - Hourly rate for an electrician $70/hr min. We restart your heart with electricity Hourly rate for a plumber $79-$80/hr . We keep your blood pumping to your brain. Hourly rate for a gardener $60/hr. We make it so you get to see and enjoy your garden again. HOURLY RATE FOR A FULLY QUALIFIED NSW PARAMEDIC ......wait for it .......... $38/hr. That is what the NSW government believe our life saving skills are worth. We come to your aid day and night rain hail or shine. We cut you out of mangled cars, we hold your hand when there is no-one else there and let you know it'll be ok. We restart your heart and bring you back to life and to your family. And yes "we see some TERRIBLE things' you wouldn't want to know about. But we are only worth $38 hour. What do you believe is fair pay for our skills??? Join with us and show the NSW Government that the public believe we are worth more than the trainee who gets the coffee in their parliamentary office. We don't often ask YOU to help US, but this time WE NEED YOU! Please share to show us your support. WE NEED YOU TO SHARE THIS POST TO GET THE MESSAGE OUT THERE. TIME TO LOBBY THE GOVERNMENT AND BE HEARD Thank you #adhsu #paramedic #WeNeedYourSupport #fairpayforourskills #whatareweworth #ambulance
10.01.2022 Take care out there. Another good tip is to find a land mark before you go into the water so you have a reference point. If possible use a building, a large tree or something that is not going to move to look back at when you're in the water. This will help you judge if you are being swept along the beach in a feeder rip. If you're at a beach that has a headland on one side or both check for a side land mark (usually a rock formation in the headland) This will enable you to check you're not getting taken out too far. If you do find yourself in a rip don't panic. Lie on your back and wave your arm for assistance. The rip will only go out so far. If possible swim back in using the waves as this body of water is trying to get to shore. Stay Safe around the water.

Stay Safe. Alyson
01.01.2022 Just a few tips to help stay safe this Summer. As it has been reported in the news we have already lost too many people to drowning so far this Summer. Please watch you children continuously. You can always check your phones later or read a book or magazine when the children are away from the water. Drowning is quick and silent. Even though your children maybe able to swim in a pool it's a very controlled environment. The temperature, colour and type of water can effect the w...ay your children can swim. If the water is cold compared with the pool temperature then children can find themselves not being able to swim due to the shock of the cold temp. Most children are used to swimming in a light blue coloured pool where they can see the bottom. Darker coloured water ways or pools can effect the way they swim. Please be aware that the buoyancy level of Salt, Chlorine and Fresh water are very different. Salt water is the easiest to swim in and fresh water has very little buoyancy and is a lot harder to swim in. Most children these days wear rash shirts. Please make sure they are tight fitting rash shirts so that when the children jump in the pool the part of the shirt that covers their stomach doesn't come up over their heads causing them to become disorientated and not be able to make their way to the surface. If your child is still wearing floaties be aware that if they are worn over the top of a rash shirt they can come off easily. A tight full fitting swim vest similar to the one below is a good idea. It also prevents the children taking the floaties off themselves. Remember to swim between the flags when you're at the beach. It's so much easier for the life guards to watch and keep you safe. If you are at a beach that is unpatrolled teach the children to find a land mark (Something that can't be moved a house, a large tree or a sign post) so that while they are in the water they can monitor whether they are moving up or down the beach in a current. Please take care these holidays and have a safe new year.

01.01.2022 Hi Everyone As I’m sure you are all aware there are new restrictions for non essential activities and the closure of schools is coming into play on Tuesday and unfortunately it affects Starting Blocks Swim School and therefore affects my swim school. Tomorrow Monday 23rd will be the last day of operation of my swim school until such time as we are allowed to open again. (Hopefully that’s not to long away)... I will do the re enrolments for term 2 soon but will obviously confirm a start date when I know. If you are fortunate enough to have a pool at home, while the weather is still warm I will be available to do private lessons at your home if you like. If you’d like to book a session please send me a message or text me on 0409502090. I wish everyone all the best in this crazy time and thank you all for supporting my business. Please remember smiles are free and contagious Stay Well & Take Care Alyson
