25.01.2022 Yesterday we explored aspects of engineering through building with different mediums. The children learnt the need to balance both sides of their see-saws through trial and error. I just love his face when he put 2 different sized blocks on the tower and the whole thing came crashing down

22.01.2022 Some people naturally need more sensory stimulation, while others need less. I fall into the "less" category. That's because I feel things MORE than others. E.g.... I have a low threshold for auditory input, so I notice noise more than others (I struggle to concentrate in noisy cafes, and am frightened by unexpected loud noises) and I’m sensitive to visual input (I don’t like lights being too bright). The idea that people are more or less sensitive to visual, auditory, touch, smell, taste and movement input is part of SENSORY PROCESSING. People who are MORE sensitive, may take measures to AVOID sensory input. People who are LESS sensitive, may take measures to SEEK sensory input. This is easy for adults to do. E.g. if I'm struggling to concentrate in a noisy cafe, I put my headphones in to screen out the noise. If the sun is too bright, I put my sunglasses on. Adults also develop coping mechanisms for when they experience unwanted sensory input. E.g. when I get frightened by a loud noise, I've learned to take a few deep breaths. Imagine being a child with sensory under- or over-sensitivity, and not having developed the measures to cope, or simply not being able to use them, because you're in an adult-controlled environment. E.g. a child who is sensitive to noise can't do much about being in a noisy classroom. A child who is less sensitive to movement, so is constantly seeking it, may have trouble sitting still on the mat and be reprimanded for this. A child who is sensitive to proprioceptive input may have a meltdown because someone brushed past them, but that brush felt like a BUMP. Or a child who is sensitive to tactile input may not be able to concentrate on painting when there’s paint on his hand. And being in these states of dysregulation, of having too much or not enough of the sensory input their bodies need to function optimally, can be very uncomfortable. It's important to understand that we all have our preferences, and they don't necessarily need to be "fixed". However, for children especially, we need to help them, and the adults around them, understand their preferences and how best to work WITH them. This takes time and patience. See more

17.01.2022 After the children woke up on Friday from rest time they noticed a bee sitting on the outside window sill. It wasn’t moving and they asked if we could help him. We carefully moved him into one of our flower gardens and left some drops of sugar water and he was gone the next day. I hope we managed to save him It’s so important to teach our littles about respect and caring for the environment to ensure they have a sustainable and beautiful world to grow old in

16.01.2022 We have had such a beautiful morning out exploring in our neighbourhoods parks. We collected some leaves off different trees for a special group project and had a roll in the grass Sometimes the happiest moments of a child’s day can be had with a field and some fallen sticks

16.01.2022 I really love just simply sitting back and watching how a childs mind works. Today is Harrys 3rd birthday, he wanted his new truck to be able to drive on his table to collect the garbage but it was too wide. He grabbed our wooden roads and made himself this creation so his truck could drive over the lava to the other side. No adult input, just his own imagination

01.01.2022 This is what pre-writing looks like in my play school. This child is 4 years old. This is her second year in my play school, where she has been able to get her... body and brain ready through HER PLAY. During this moment of her play, she is using her core muscles together with her biceps, forearms, hands and fingers. These are the exact same muscles that need to be coordinated and strong for successful writing. Her body IS READY for that wonderful moment when SHE is intrinsically motivated to write. Getting ready to write doesnt require a scheduled time for an adult to direct a child to write. Getting ready to write requires PLAY.

01.01.2022 With all the horrible fires going on at the moment there are so many animals going into shelters and animal Carers homes. If you can knit, sew or crochet please join and help out
