27.01.2022 2021::a year in review::March :: :: In March, I was fortunate enough to spend some time at home through some weekends down home. This included lots of quality time with my bestest buddy, Sebastian. I would very much love for him to be with me in Perth, but his life is something very special living with his Grand-fur-parents. ::... :: #2021inreview #march2021 #theyearthatwas2021 See more
25.01.2022 I have been spending the last few weeks assessing students using this bad boy. Originally, I wasnt a fan. Now Im starting to be able to see the data & work individually with the students, I can understand where they are at and where we are going. Other than being a bit tiring and taking time, YARC tests are easy to follow and give all the information you need, including being able to calculate reading ages online! How easy! .... . #readingassessments #readingage #yarc #comprehension #fluency #readingrate #accuracy #secondary See more

24.01.2022 List of essential read aloud and shared books for early and emergent readers... These texts all lend themselves to excellent literature and language loving experiences, where parents begin by reading to their child and then over time, after repetitive readings, the child is able to join in the reading and/or mimic the language of the book. This is critical in young children developing comprehensive reading skills! Its the Bear - J. Alborough Who Sank the Boat? - P. Allen... The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch - R & A Armitage Mr Grumpys Outing - J. Burningham Dear Zoo - R. Campbell The Secret Birthday Message - E. Carle The Very Busy Spider - E. Carle Ten in the Bed - P. Dale Are You My Mother? - P. Eastman A Feast For Ten - C. Falwell Hattie and the Fox - M. Fox Millions of Cats - W. Gag More Spaghetti I Say - R. Gelman Something from Nothing - P. Gilman The Doorbell Rang - P. Hutchins Rosies Walk - P. Hutchins Twist with a Burger, Jitter with a Bug - L. Lowry Look Once, Look Twice - J. Marshall Goodnight Gorilla - P. Rathman Were Going on a Bear Hunt - M. Rosen I Went Walking - S. Williams (List taken from Parkes (1990) "Read It Again! Revisiting Shared Reading) Although they are older texts (most published in the 1990s), some are absolute classics! Most of which will be available at your local library. Perfect for ages 2 to 6!

20.01.2022 Got these beauties from @bigwaustralia today, ready to start with some new tutoring students, ready to work on their reading. Tutoring two students at once, of different ability levels could be tough, but activities within these books mean we can be working on the same comprehension concept together, at our own level. Thanks for a great book, Big W! $10 is a bargain!! #tutoring #teaching #readingcomprehension #bigw #studentworkbooks #hammondparktutor #primarytutoring #hammondpark #cockburncentral #atwell #wandi

18.01.2022 The Western Australian School Plan for Term 2 has been released... how do you feel about the announcement?? It has definitely evoked emotions in a lot of teachers and parents around the state, but I believe it is a great place for us to start getting back to normal... or the new normal, whatever that will be. A few key points include that it is optional- you wont be penalized for keeping your kids at home, teachers will be supported in providing what is needed for you to e...ducate your children at home and schools have been and will be working hard to provide a safe and hygienic place for your child to learn... But we must also remember a number of other things- school is often a place described where children learn reading, writing and mathematics... true, however, equally importantly, it is a place they learn to socialize, share, play and have friends. These skills, taught through structured and incidental opportunities are hard for parents to provide in the same way at home and are certainly less rich online. Additionally, your child, in the long run, wont be disadvantaged if you choose to keep them home. But remember to maintain responsible choices such as social distancing during that time, such as not taking the children to the park to play or the shops- if youre doing that, they may as well be at school. Little by little, because of such low or no community transmission rates in WA, our state needs to start resuming its normal practice, and by getting kids back into a routine, it will help get our state back into a routine. With the successful opening of schools, the next layer of society can be opened and so forth. If parents have any questions about either the return to school or home schooling, they should contact their school directly, as each school has the freedom to make this work as best as they can for them. Also, if anyone wants any advice or help in either area, please message!
18.01.2022 Its back to school time, and Coles has quite a good range of books, resources and stationary for parents. The NAPLAN exercise books are excellent, especially for the price, providing pictures, interesting examples and age appropriate texts/questions. For early years students, the flash cards are great, especially for learning sight words. Sight words are so imperative for success in reading, so best to start young.... The stationary is a range of great brands, which will last well at school. Its important for teachers that when each students book lists come in, good quality brands of pencils etc are brought. Theres nothing worse than cheap, pretty pencils that keep breaking or are poor to write with. They might be cheaper, but on this occasion, the price saving is just not worth it!

16.01.2022 Sight words In Dyslexia friendly font For my Year 5, 6 and 7 students Finally got round to the laminating!!!... Sight words are valuable for the developing fluency in reading, as it allows instant recall of common words and gives the brain more power to concentrate on the unknown words. Create a mastery folder to help keep practice fun!
15.01.2022 Editing Skills- @ricpublications This series of black line masters are my favourite when working with kids on their editing skills! Giving a teacher page, each activity has a range of different focuses from grammar, punctuation, spelling and text type, meaning I can select based on the curriculum focus or point of need. Through using this range, I have seen a great improvement in the application of explicitly taught grammar, especially in my E.S.L students! #ricpublications #editing #teacher #eslteacher #interventionteacher #learningdifficulties #grammar #spelling #punctuation #teacherproducts

12.01.2022 Listening to @abcperth 720 radio this afternoon is making me reminisce. The conversation with @geoffhutchison is about wearing masks, should we be directed to, because of community transmission of Covid within our Western Australian community. Living in Beijing meant wearing a mask. Yes, it feels weird. Yes, it feels a bit uncomfortable. Yes, your speech is a little muffled. However. Yes, you do get used to it. Yes, you dont look weird. Yes, it helps to keep you healthy.... It helped to keep me healthy in the past. If community transmission takes off here in Perth like it has in Melbourne, a mask will help keep me healthy in the future. No problem. Dont feel self conscious. Dont feel uncomfortable. Doctors and nurses wear one for hours and hours every day. You arent being told to wear a full hazmat suit. You arent being told to get an oxygen tank and scuba mask. You would be keeping yourself, your family, your friends, your neighbour and your fellow man safe and healthy. No brainer. #nobrainer #masksforhealth #wearingamask #covidmask #livinginbeijing #beijing See more

12.01.2022 Reading comprehension involves so much more than reading a text and reciting the plot points, main character and setting. Applying your prior knowledge, making connections with your experience, formulating your own questions, predicting what happens next, inferring from hints in the text, determining the main idea and summarising a text are all areas of comprehension vital for succeeding in reading in the upper grades. Teaching these can be simple, but it involves making sure the correct language is taught and different examples are analysed to develop these skills. I can help your child improve their reading and analysis skills, so get in contact now!
11.01.2022 Its nearly school holidays time... You might not be able to travel overseas or even to somewhere else in Australia... However... How great is WA!... 08.01.2022 Music Such an amazing art form & powerful connector to the human spirit. . This is one of my oldest and best friends, Erin. And she is a product of 3 things in life.... Hard work. Determination. And the Department of Educations instrumental music program. Erin began sax through the program at the start of year 8, and it was like a fish taking to water. I know this, because I was there & witnessed the love & passion. Now Erin is an internationally recognized performer, having studied in Perth and Manchester at a tertiary level, and a teacher, band leader & ensemble director. This is where the instrumental music program, or any music lessons could lead. It is such a joy to watch someone you love have such a pure connection to what they love. And all from the humble beginnings of the music program at Geographe Bay Music (formerly Busselton Senior High School music program) #proud #music #fringe #sim #schoolofinstrumentalmusic #busseltonshs #geographebaymusic #saxophone #sax #rock #perthfringe See more

04.01.2022 Reading Eggs! Have your kids run out of reading material, and need something specific to their reading level to keep them going? Reading eggs is a perfect tool to assist children with their reading! 04.01.2022 It doesnt matter if your child is using Letters and Sounds at Dunsborough, Jolly Phonics/Grammar at Vasse, the Big Six Reading at West Busselton or similar programs at other schools throughout the community, preparing your child for school in 2020 will assist them with their development in each of these programs. I have experience and training in each of these. Contact me for more information!

04.01.2022 While some teachers are lamenting the return to school tomorrow for Term 3... Miss Carroll is ready for another week off! My school, as it is independent, starts a week earlier in Term 1, so we can have 3 weeks in the middle of the year. Im all about this initiative, especially as Semester 2 of uni starts this week too! 03.01.2022 The Targeting Maths Apps are an amazing new way to learn mathematics. From the makers of Australias favourite maths program Targeting Maths. The first Australian Curriculum maths apps for the iPad! Each child has their own account and their individual achievements are recorded in the progress section. This app combines all that we know ab...out how children learn maths with the powerful interactivity and motivation provided by the iPad. Key Features Training A range of different maths topics with question sets that cover the main topics for each year. Timed Improves speed and recall of essential maths skills. Multiplayer Up to 4 students can play against each other in this game of speed and fun. Circus Students earn tokens to spend on Exploding Mice and Robo-Juggle games in the circus. 02.01.2022 Learning packs ready to start with 2 new students tomorrow morning! I hope these students feel as excited about beautiful new books and stationary as I do!!! . The packs also include some handy star chart/calendars for each day of the week. I tried my best... I read for 15 minutes I completed all required tasks . Stars can be issued, 1, 2 or 3 for each day depending on how many mum and dad believe they deserve. When tutoring rolls around every week, a certain amount of stars equates to a certain amount of rewards!!! . . Fingers crossed they respond well! Its so hard when you are going in cold with new students- it can take some time to work them out!
