23.01.2022 You all know I’m all about the kids... well recently I was contacted by entrepreneur @author_miagjoni, a 12 year old who has written and published her own book! Maybe the kids are looking for something new to read, maybe they’re interested in connecting with another aspiring author themselves.... Give her a follow, send her a DM, I’m sure she’ll be more than happy to answer your questions! #youngauthors #write #writing #stories #writersofinstagram #kidswhowritebooks

10.01.2022 #Repost @edutopia with @get_repost When it comes to high school math and science, we’re losing talented young women in droves during a crucial phase in their lives. A 2017 study reveals the discouraging reason: At virtually every point on the ability spectrum, girls rate themselves lower than boys do. Even the best-performing girls do not take the most advanced mathematics courses and subsequently tend to pursue non-PEMC (physical science, engineering, mathematics, an...d computer science) major fields, write the researchers. What’s behind the lack of confidence? Part of it is our cultural iconography around the maths and sciences, a mostly outdated, toxic mix of stereotypes that relentlessly portrays scientists, mathematicians, and engineers as fumbling, sometimes loutish, but always brilliant males. There’s some evidence, too, that girls avoid STEM courses when the classes feature an endless series of isolated problems to solve, instead of positioning STEM more holistically, as a collection of powerful tools that can be used to tackle big problems and change the world. Recent research sheds light on some solutions to the problem: Increase the visibility of female role models in math and science Encourage girlsand all studentsto adopt a growth mindset that can help undo the damage of destructive thoughts like I’m not good at math or I don’t look like a scientist Reduce timed and high-stakes tests, which can increase math anxiety, particularly for girls Connect science and math learning to real-world projects that improve the lives of people. 04.01.2022 You might have seen this in the news today, but understandably, you also might have skimmed past it; the terrors associated with last lockdown and remote learning are real, we get it. But, I’m putting it out there; this piece by @voigt.adam is worth your consideration. #perspective #differentwaystolearn #learningathome #remotelearning

01.01.2022 Everything about this speaks to me as an educator. Got fingers? Use them! Stop telling kids not to and start taking notice of all the times you count on your own fingers.... #Repost @edutopia with @get_repost Forbidding kids from using their fingers to count deprives them of access to a powerful neural circuit that is essential to higher-order mathematical achievement. In fact, when paired with number games, a 2017 study found that finger-counting actually boosts critic...al skills like counting, ordering, comparing, and adding. Even when kids don’t use their fingers while doing math problems, researchers found that the part of the brain responsible for the perception and representation of fingersthe somatosensory finger arealights up anyway, activating a sort of mental pantomime of the physical act. So you can stop kids from counting on their hands, but the fingers of the mind, in ghostly enumeration, will run the math regardless. 01.01.2022 I’ve taught a lot of #preps this week, which has been fun. This group of students wrote notes to their big buddies, and we glued them, like a turtle shell... and attempted to make the whole thing look... well, like a turtle...I think it’s...ok!!! Right now, it’s all the little things that keep our kids connected, and the champers that keeps most of us going!! #classicprepmoment #prepteacher #crtbyday #tutorbynight #primarytutor #english #maths #victoriancurriculum #melbourne #champerstime

18.09.2021 As we #celebrate the return to school for P-7 and Y10-12 tomorrow can we take a moment to reflect on these 2 questions: How amazing are our kids? Could we have done what they’ve done at the same age? ... The resilience and tenacity our kids have shown in such an unusual time shouldn’t be ignored, and as adults we could all learn a thing or two from them... (I suspect in the years that come....we will!) To the adults - thank you. The unconditional support of your kids is the reason we can do what we do here at #misshortleismobile We hope you have a week filled with getting your own work done, and heck; we won’t judge you if there’s a sneaky champers after drop off tomorrow instead of a latté! #itsbeenalongtimecoming To the kids still at home - #youvegotthis - it won’t be long now! #education #tutor #specialist #team #zoom #online #remote #learning #bayside #burbs #support #tenacity #resilience #wellbeing #backtoschool #teachersofinstagram #melbourneteachers #problemsolvers #thankyou
