23.01.2022 "Strengthening Communities" was the theme for the Wotjobaluk Festival in 2019. A celebration of culture and history for the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wer...gaia and Jupagulk people of western Victoria, was held in Dimboola in 2019 to share their culture of weaving, carving and painting. 21.01.2022 WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURTE CAMP OVEN RECIPE? There are few things nicer than the smell of roasting meat, herbs and vegetables wafting from a camp oven as you eat di...nner amongst nature. Normally dozens of outdoor chefs head to Patchewollock this weekend for the annual Pine Plains Camp Oven Cook - although that event has sadly been cancelled due to COVID. What's your go-to camp oven meal? Do you go for roasts, stews, desserts - or something else? Do you love the classic rosemary and garlic, or is there another secret ingredient in your pot?

19.01.2022 EXCITING NEW DIRECTION FOR FAMOUS LOCAL NURSERY The 74-year-old Wail Nursery is getting a new name and new focus, with Barengi Gadjin Land Council announcing ...its rebranding as Dalki Garringa. Under the new name which means 'good growing', in the Wergaia language the nursery will specialise in native food plants, and protecting their cultural intellectual property and stories. Dalki Garringa is putting it into Wergaia language, about good growing, about the ownership for Traditional Owners really taking that forward step in the production of our endemic species Acting CEO of Barengi Gadjin Land Council Tim McCartney says. "The area is an agriculture area, and the opportunity that we can be able to have our plants back in the land where they should be is certainly something we’re really big about. Among the many edible species that will be cultivated and sold at the site are murnong, chocolate lilies, native mint, native thyme, salt bush and golden wattle. The nursery isn’t open to the public yet, while they get the site set up for visitors, but will post updates on social media. Mr McCartney says that the chance to focus on Wimmera specific species is one of the key motivations behind the rebranding. You can walk into Bunnings and see natives but some of these natives are from Western Australia or other part of the country; we’re about, let’s be really serious about our natives, that are endemic to our area The nursery current employs four staff, with the hope of growing that over the coming months. It’s a really exciting opportunity, it’s an exciting time for BGLC and for the nursery.

16.01.2022 This year's theme for reconciliation week is More than a word. Reconciliation takes Action. Over the last week we have reflected on this theme and presented s...ome ideas to help get us thinking about our shared history, the injustices of the past, and the inequities that remain a part of this country, as well as some prompts toward actions we can take to move forward to a place of equity, justice and pride. Acknowledging our true history and the sovereignty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands and supporting the Treaty process is an integral step. Adding your voice to calls for reconciliation and justice and standing up if you see something disrespectful, being an ‘active bystander’, are all ways to take action. Learning about the Country where you live and visit, some of the language or a simple greeting, and paying respect to the Traditional Owners of that Country, publicly, privately or even when on your own, can be an important way to acknowledge and take pride in the rich culture and history of this country. We also recommend learning through reading. There are many informative books such as Bruce Pascoe’s ‘Dark Emu’, and some moving narratives of the lived experience such as Archie Roach’s memoir ‘Tell Me Why’. This Reconciliation Week and beyond is a good time to stand up and take action in whichever way you can. Every step counts. https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/actions-for-reconciliati/ or check link in bio Image credit: Reconciliation Australia

16.01.2022 FIRE UPDATE Forest Fire Management Victoria says the fire burning in Little Desert National Park three kilometres south west of Dimboola is now contained. In an... update at 10:21am, the authority said it would work today to reinforce the containment lines. It follows crews containing the Pump Jack Track Fire, also burning in Little Desert, on Tuesday afternoon. The two fires have burned through just under 4400 hectares of bushland since lightning sparked them on Sunday. FFMV is still advising nearby residents to monitor warnings so they can act quickly if the situation changes. The Country Fire Authority is predicting a day of Very High Fire Danger on Thursday, but no Total Fire Ban has been issued at this stage.
