22.01.2022 Truly awesome - this is what i love about Tap!!

22.01.2022 Hi all, thought Id just touch on the subject of doing warm ups before classes. A little stretching is always a good idea before any activity and certainly helps with flexibility - especially in this colder weather. Simple exercises like toe curls, hamstring stretches, torso twists, leg swings, leg lifts and toe touches really do get the blood circulation moving and muscles/connective tissue/joints working more smoothly. A brisk walk also gets the feet and legs/hips working. Warmups assist in helping prevent those niggling little strains and sorenesses that can creep in from time to time, so try to find 5 minutes before dancing classes to get your body ready for the fun part - tapping time!

19.01.2022 Congrats to everyone who took part in the George Street Festivals Tap demo in the Brush factory. The rooms were filled with spectators and everyone enjoyed watching you all put on such a great show for them - well done!

17.01.2022 Some things never change, way back then even they knew tap was good for you! Never too early or too late to enjoy it:)

14.01.2022 Here are a couple of pointers to help you become better tapsters, they really do make a difference to your tapping.. 1. Remember that moving in time to the music is what helps make your tapping become a part of the music, not separate to or competing with it, but complimenting it. There is nothing quite like the joy of being as one with the music - it is the essence of all dancing. Try to make your tap either work in time with the beat, or add an interesting contrast that wor...ks with the music to create an overall sound that makes the whole better than the individual parts - you and those around you will know how good this sounds when you nail it. Just making your own tap sounds without being in sync with the music wont sound or feel anywhere nearly as nice, working on this will make you feel so good! 2. Try to keep your tap sounds clean and separate. If you find you are rushing and it is not giving you nice clean steps, just slow down until your muscle memory allows you to keep it crisp at a faster pace. Sloppy tapping due to confused and unclear taps does not sound or feel anywhere near as nice and wont help your tapping improve as much as crisp sharp tapping does, even if it means slowing things down to get there. 3. Two things which will also help make you a better tapper are having relaxed ankles and leaning forward in your posture. Let your legs do the work from the hips down and consciously try to keep your ankles as relaxed as you can. Keep your weight forward and on the balls of your feet and your centre of gravity mostly in the middle so that you can transfer your weight to wherever it is needed at any given time in a step sequence. Weight transfer is so important, it means your correct leg will be ready to be used as it will be unweighted and free to move if the weight is off it, split weight (equal weight on both legs) is rarely of use to a tap dancer. 4. BREATHE! Sometimes we are so focused on trying to do steps/routines correctly that we forget to breathe - and regular, even breathing is a great help in keeping a steady flow and rhythm to what we are doing. 5. Look up and not at the floor. It is one of the hardest things for beginners in particular, but it really does affect your balance and posture when you are looking down and forward. Your brain knows where the floor is at all times and does not need you to look at it to make sure it hasnt gone somewhere while you werent looking:) Looking up and forward means your body core is centred and ready for whatever you need it to do and not having to be redirected from the eyes down posture. If you slowly master some or all of the above, youll see a definite improvement in your tapping, along with practise - practise and more practise of course!
