17.01.2022 Wish you were here Miss Porter's House - in Newcastle West for some #heritageathome. We're in full bloom and Spring floral colours in NSW, but we were also big on colour back in the swinging 60s. Miss Porter's House has a large collection of orange items- a favourite colour of the Porter sisters? Orange was fashionable in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Remember orange benchtops and vinyl chairs? I'm sure we or our family members still have orange homewares stashed away waiting for their big comeback. #MissPortersHouse. Our doors are not open yet, but we're working behind the scenes to prepare for visitors very soon. In the meantime you can find out more at https://bit.ly/2ZW7FoV

A doll, a tin toy, a tiny tea set or that once-a-year publication, a Christmas Annual. All of these are on display at Miss Porter’s House Museum together with an extensive collection of Edwardian Christmas postcards Postcards were the text messages of the day in 1909. See the card Florence Jolley sent to Herbert Porter a few weeks before their marriage. The wedding did not seem to have required extensive planning. On the reverse of the Christmas post card in a brief few lines Florence agrees to change the date from 5th to 12th, promises to tell Herb the news when she sees him and signs off Love from Flo. As a celebration of how Herbert and Florence might have spent Christmas with their daughters, Ella and Hazel, the current house volunteers invite everyone to see the house decorated for CHRISTMAS WITH THE PORTERS. Experience how they celebrated with cards, recipes, decorations and toys during the early years of the twentieth century. Read many of those Christmas post cards exchanged between Florence Jolley and Herbert Porter.
