25.01.2022 Hi everyone, late post this evening. I've been on the road to Queensland to visit my mum - 94 now, that's a pretty decent age, wouldn't you say! Tonight, Misty Threads is talking about Yalke Blue, a lovely fabric, by June Smith, from Central Australia. Yalke Blue is beautiful as a feature fabric but also sets other fabrics off well in combination. You can find it on our website at https://www.mistythreads.com.au//au/yalke-blue-detail.html and, like our other NAIDOC fabrics, it's on special at $14 pm for November. Our latest bears came out to play (see https://www.mistythreads.com.au/soft-toys.html) - don't they look great against Yalke Blue! The background's pretty neat too.

22.01.2022 A little story of aussie fabrics, just the right size for Christmas - all available online at mistythreads.com.au. Enjoy and I hope you have a good weekend!

22.01.2022 It's Saturday so just a few of my favourite things - fabric, more fabric, little furry things, things to read, thunderstorms, flame trees and, of course, more fabric. Enjoy your weekend, everyone. #mistythreads #fabric #morefabric #stillyourlocalpatchworkshop #myfavouritethings

22.01.2022 From NAIDOC week to Diwali, the Indian Festival of Light - despite everything 2020 has dumped on us, there are still wonderful things in this world. I hope your weekend is pretty good.

19.01.2022 "As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame" ..... yes, I had to quote that, didn't I! One of my all time favourite poets and one of my all time favourite poems! (Gerard Manley Hopkins). And here is a favourite fabric, Kingfisher Camp by a favourite artist, Nambooka. This is also on special until the end of November, $14.00 pm, and can be found at https://www.mistythreads.com.au//authentic-aboriginal-desi.

19.01.2022 Water has always been a precious resource in Australia and there would be very few of us, even city dwellers who have not seen or experienced our terrifying droughts. Today's beautiful fabrics are Underground Water in red and black by Janet Nakamarra Long, depicting the underground flows of water, the soakages and aquifers in amazing topographical detail. Speaking as a quilter/sewer, I am always looking for that perfect shade of [insert colour here] - the red in Underground Water Red is such a perfect shade of red. I haven't found it elsewhere yet! Both fabrics can be found at https://www.mistythreads.com.au//authentic-aboriginal-desi and, like our other fabrics this week, are on special at $14 pm for November.

18.01.2022 Hi everyone, hope you are all well and looking forward to your weekend. For this Friday in NAIDOC week 2020, our fabric is a beautiful design by Tanya Nangala Price, Wild Flower Dreaming. Wild Flower Dreaming is quite restrained but shows so well the lush flowering of the wildflowers after even small winter falls of rain in the semi desert regions of Central Australia. Wild Flower Dreaming is available on our website at https://www.mistythreads.com.au//authentic-aboriginal-desi and is on sale for $14 pm during November.

16.01.2022 In the spirit of advice from Butterfly Media, today a little note in memoriam. My beloved mum, Elsa, died early Tuesday morning at the very respectable age of 94 years and 9 months. It was entirely expected, very peaceful and, of course, totally unwelcome. However, this isn't to spread sadness here; this is to say what an amazing woman she was. Gentle and quiet but strong, deeply conservative but she always had my lefty, feminist back, fiercely intelligent but gave her all t...o being a wife and mother when the demands of the patriarchy were even more than they are now. She grew up a city girl, living a stone's throw from the beach - she became a country woman on remote properties in the harsh inland of northwest NSW and southwest Qld. Growing up there, I took this land for granted but it must have been such a difference for her. She lived with what she had rather than what she could have had. The link from her story to mine is not just that she is my mother but that she introduced me as a young child to the wonderful world of sewing, knitting and making things that, of necessity, were always useful but beautiful and decorative too. The more I study the history of our work, the more I see what a powerful social and political tool it has been and can be as well as a sanity saving pastime and a happy place for many of us. All this despite the tiresome putdown of 'mere woman's work'. As today's world grows harsher, it may well, once again, take its place as a domestic necessity. In the meantime, I remain very grateful to my lovely mum for giving me my happy place in both work and leisure. #mistythreads See more

11.01.2022 Just a small jumble of a few of our favourite patterns - these are by the talented Rachelle Denneny and Rachaeldaisy, well written and easily made by even less experienced quilters. I've watched several of our quilters making up these patterns and they look so good, especially in scraps. And because I wasn't organised for Black Friday, we're going to do a December sale on all our patterns - 15% until 24 December with the code PATTERN15. See www.mistythreads.com.au for details. #mistythreads #quiltingpatterns #rachelledenenny #rachaeldaisy #stillyourlocalpatchworkshop #Christmasshopping

06.01.2022 It's NAIDOC week again! NAIDOC week celebrations are held across Australia, normally each July, to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2020 celebrations were delayed to this week due to Covid-19 restrictions. From previously chatting with several of you, I know many of you love both history, particularly the history of Australia, and great stories. Well, there is some incredible history from our first nations p...eoples to be found and amazing stories to marvel at. The theme for this 2020 NAIDOC week, "Always Was, Always Will Be" recognises the spiritual and cultural connection of our first nations people to this country. It acknowledges the many nations and cultures that lived here and their occupation and sustainable care for this continent for over 65,000 years. This long history becomes part of Australian history for all us too and there is much we can learn from these millenia. The week is a great opportunity for Australians from all walks of life to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, to hear their history and stories and to join in the many activities available (see https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/2020-theme for details). Misty Threads has been delighted over many years now to provide wonderful authentic Aboriginal fabrics (see https://www.mistythreads.com.au//authentic-aboriginal-desi) designed by amazingly talented indigenous artists, many well-known and represented in several areas of media. These fabrics each tell the artist's own story and show us the beautiful colours of our land. Over the next week, we'll be showing you some of our all time favourites and the lovely touch they can bring to your own creativity. Keep an eye out for our posts, we can't wait to share NAIDOC week with you all.
