23.01.2022 FEEDING FOR A COOL, CALM HORSE Fizzy or nervous behavior by your horse can make a leisurely ride or performance, unpleasant and disappointing. Inexperience of the rider, excessive energy, a nervous make-up or a predisposition of a particular breed or bloodline can contribute to a horse being fizzy, unpredictable or anxious. Patience, good handling, education and experience can often settle the fizzy, nervous horse. If an unbalanced, incorrectly fed diet has contributed to the... fizzy nature of the horse then adjustments can be made. One of the most important things we need to do when feeding a fizzy horse is to feed a balanced diet. It is important that we assess the two main components of the ration. 05.01.2022 Q&A's with MITAVITE QUESTION: Are steam extruded and pelleted horse feeds essentially the same thing?... ANSWER: No. The steam extrusion process is quite different to the pelleting process, and produces horse feed that is 30 40% more digestible than pelleted feed. Steam extrusion is a high heat, high pressure process. In contrast to the pelleting process, the steam extrusion process gelatinises (breaks down) starch, protein and oil molecules. Once these 'bonds' are broken down they become much more digestible for horses. Higher digestibility = greater nutrient utilisation. Better for your horse, and better on your budget!
