24.01.2022 The Great Vigil of Easter - (3 April, Saturday, - Service at 7:30 pm) The Service of the Light in which the risen Christ, the light of the world is welcomed into the Church and the world. The Proclamation or Exultet is sung in praise of the light The Vigil in which we read from the Hebrew Scriptures (old testament) which tell the Salvation Story of which the Resurrection of Christ is the climax and fulfillment. The Service of the Word in which the New Testament Sc...riptures about the resurrection are read. The Baptismal Service in which we renew our own baptismal promises and bless and celebrate the baptismal water. The Service of the Eucharist in which the first Eucharist of Easter is celebrated. After the long ‘darkness’ and ‘drought’ of Lent the symbols of water and light are welcomed back tonight. They are a sign of life-giving nature of the risen Christ, with whom we have died and been reborn in baptism. Like the other two parts of the Triduum, the Easter Vigil and First Mass of the Resurrection is deliberate and prayerful. No-one is in a hurry. Everyone is attending, with deep love, to the wonder and majesty of the Risen Christ. See more

21.01.2022 What is Evensong? St Michael’s has a strong musical tradition with its service of Evensong. Evensong is a distinctly Anglican tradition with an attractive outreach to the wider community through its focus on the choral presentation of canticles and psalms which accompany scripture readings. ... This service has historical roots prior to the reign of Henry VIII when the Church of England was still governed by the Holy See of Rome. Thomas Cranmer, the first Archbishop of the English Reformation under Henry VIII, published a revised Prayer Book in 1552 for the newly established Anglican Church. He modelled the service of Evening Prayer on the old monastic services of Vespers and Compline which were sung at the close of day. Hence Evensong has become a service of communal contemplation through singing and reading of scripture, led by a priest, but possibly also by a layperson, since the sacraments are not involved. On Sunday May 2nd the Parish Choir will lead the congregational hymns, sing the Psalm for the evening, the two Canticles celebrating the birth of Christ, and the 17thC. Easter Carol O sons & daughters, let us sing as an anthem. Our historic Bishop Organ will feature in J.S. Bach’s Easter Chorale Prelude setting of Christ lay in bonds of death for the Postlude. Our next service will be on Sunday May 2nd at 5p.m. Here is an open invitation to enjoy a time of quiet meditation and music.

21.01.2022 Why do we have a Lychgate? Traditionally a lychgate was the place where pallbearers could rest a coffin before entering a churchyard for the burial. Although ashes are interred in our Garden of Remembrance, no bodies have ever been buried in the grounds. Instead of a graveyard surrounding the church, a cemetery was established in 1853 on 2 acres of land across the other side of the Brownhill Creek Valley up on Blythewood Road. Although no longer administered by the Parish, ...it is still an Anglican burial site. So why do we have a lychgate? Whilst the finishing touches were being made to the construction of our new Parish Hall in 1980, it was found that sufficient matching sandstone could be made available to build a lychgate. It was a gift from the Clampett family in memory of Albert Wyndham Clampett, M.A. and Alice his wife and was dedicated on 21st December 1980. Archdeacon Clampett was rector of St Michael’s for the incredibly long period of 46 years and 16 days from 1893 to 1939! Adjoining the lychgate is our delightful St Michael’s Street Library where local residents are welcome to borrow books and to add to the collection.

18.01.2022 We will remember them. We will remember them. Lest we forget Lest we forget.... In St Michaels hangs an Honour board, remembering those that joined voluntarily joined the amies to protect our way of life. In the Mitcham and Hawthorn Parish Messenger in November 1916 the rector, Archdeacon Clampett, wrote: On Sunday, November 5, I unveiled a handsome roll of honour board in St. Michael’s. It has inscribed on it the names of thirty-six who, being members of St. Michael’s congregation ... have voluntarily joined the armies of the King. The design and execution is the work and gift of Mr. T.W. Jones, who has given us a beautiful roll, of which we are justly proud. The Union Jack overhanging the roll is the gift of Mr. N.M.L. Eddington, and it indicates the inspiring force which led our thirty-six to offer. Three of the number have paid the supreme sacrifice H.D. Tutt, Liscombe Spiller, and Alf Bradey. They were all fine lads we are proud of them. May they find rest, and pass on from glory to glory till they come to the light of God’s blessed presence. Before World War 1 ended two years later many more names were added. In all, the Roll of Honour of the men who went from St Michael’s to the front contains fifty-three names, thirteen of whom or near enough to one-quarter were killed. As we remember this ANZAC Day these various battles fought across fields and towns so far from home, you may like to come to St Michaels, and look up at the board (on the back wall of the church) and offer a prayer for all the young people that have given of themselves that we may have our freedom.

08.01.2022 Who is Archdeacon Clampett? A bronze bust of Archdeacon Albert Wyndham Clampett sits on the window ledge in the entrance porch looking down on present day parishioners as they enter the church. Who was he, and why is there a bust of him up there? Described as being an Irishman, small of stature with a pronounced hooked nose, twinkling eyes and an infectious laugh, he had a great booming voice and gave fiery sermons. He was Rector of St Michael’s for over 46 years, from 18...93 to 1939! As well as serving as the Rector of Mitcham, Clampett was also Priest-in-Charge of the Hills’ Mission District which included the areas of Coromandel Valley, Belair, Clarendon, Happy Valley and Kangaroo Island! Initially he walked or did his rounds on horseback, but later in life acquired a Model ‘T’ Ford motor car. The sculptor of the bust is unknown, but apparently Clampett was rather embarrassed about the whole thing and hid it in a cupboard in his office, before it mysteriously appeared in his grand-daughter Suzanne’s sandpit. Many years later Suzie (then Mrs Graham Brookman) gave it to Archdeacon Andrew Cheesman who placed it on the window ledge. So, next Sunday, say Good morning Archdeacon.
07.01.2022 Thank you for being part of the month of prayer in this last week we focus on proclaiming the gospel. As you prayer may you live out the gospel in action. Join us on Wednesday evening 7:30 pm as we share, hear, reflect and pray. Zoom details below Feel free to forward this email to family, friends or others you feel would be happy to join with us in prayer together. I look forward to having you pray together with us.... Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82341865907 Meeting ID: 823 4186 5907 Passcode: 366366 Together We proclaim the gospel. Self-Reflection * What is the gospel you have received? * How do you tell of and live out the gospel you are to proclaim? Scripture: Luke 4.14-21 14 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour. 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. Reflection It is all about good news for the poor not impoverishing aspiration; it is all about release for captives, not binding by rules; it is all about sight for the blinded, not making more wounded; it is all about freeing oppressed not crushing more spirits. The Messiah’s manifesto is surely ours: a gospel of glorious goodness; vulnerable love in courageous and creative action; to a world living in isolation, brokenness and pain. Prayer Gracious God, you sent your son in the power of the Spirit to redeem your people. Unite us in our diversity and heal our broken Church, so that the world may be drawn to the source of all healing, in Jesus Christ. Amen. Action Try to summaries the gospel into one sentence or summaries the gospel into an action today. 05.01.2022 Making the Sign of the Cross When you were Baptised, you were given the sign of the cross as a symbol of your faith, as the badge, the distinguishing mark of a Christian. It was made upon your forehead. Now, on the journey of the Christian Life and Faith you can make it for yourself, by tracing the Cross with the Right Hand from the forehead, then touching the chest, then the shoulders, from left to right. It is our Christian Family symbol of Faith in Jesus the Lord. It is c...ustom that during the Eucharist the sign of the Cross is made: a. When the Priest says In the Name of the Father before or after the sermon. b. At the Absolution after the General Confession when the Priest makes the sign of the Cross over the people. c. At the end of the Creed an acceptance of our faith and our baptismal creed. d. At the point of the prayer for the departed reminding us of the journey of life, death and resurrection. e. At the end of the prayer of consecration, as here is Christ raised up for us and we rejoice. f. At the time of receiving Holy Communion placing ourselves into the presence of the one that comes to us, we pray that Christ will be in our minds, hears and actions. g. The Blessing and Dismissal at the end of the Service go forth and be not ashamed to profess Christ crucified for us. * When the Gospel is announced we sign with the thumb a small cross on the forehead; lips and heart to show we will take the words to our minds; speak the words with our lips; and keep the words in our hearts.
05.01.2022 A square Church? The Church of St Michael at Mitcham, an historic Anglican Church, opened in 1852, is one of the oldest in Adelaide. Constructed of local stone with an imposing tower, it is set in large grounds amidst towering River Red Gums almost hidden from view in our quiet leafy suburb of ‘Upper’ Mitcham. Within twelve years of the opening the building was too small, so the southern wall was taken down, arches erected in its place, and the wall rebuilt some 23 feet ...(7m) further south. That is why we have an almost square church. Today the two naves are integrated with the memorial panelling around the walls which was progressively installed between 1984 and 2001. The priest’s vestry and a choir vestry (now the narthex) were later additions in the late 1800s. On both occasions matching stone was acquired from the original quarry site near the entrance to the Brownhill Creek Recreation Park. The Centenary Memorial Terrace in front of the church dates from 1953 with the new Parish Hall and Office constructed in 1980. The Hall adjoins the church via a cloister of Basket Range stone which harmonises aesthetically with the original 1850s stonework.
04.01.2022 I hope that you have been enjoining the prayer cards and taking the opportunity to spend time in prayer and reflection. It has been wonderful to hear some really positive feedback and deep insights. Please keep prayer together with us Join us on Wednesday evening 7:30 pm as we share, hear, reflect and pray. Zoom details below Feel free to forward this email to family, friends or others you feel would be happy to join with us in prayer together. I look forward to having y...ou pray together with us. Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82341865907 Meeting ID: 823 4186 5907 Passcode: 366366 Together We belong to Christ. Self-Reflection * What is it that excites you about your baptism? * What does the Phrase I belong to Christ mean for you? Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1.10-17 10 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. 12 What I mean is that each of you says, I belong to Paul, or I belong to Apollos, or I belong to Cephas, or I belong to Christ. 13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. Reflection I belong to Christ does not exclude others rather it embraces the differences. As we are all one in the Body black/white, male/female, Greek/Jew, we find the common ground we share; faith, hope, love, joy, come from Christ. What we do, we do in and for Christ that together we may be one, committed to proclaiming and living the gospel, now and in the time to come. Prayer Living God in life and death we give our worship and thanksgiving. Enliven in us your spirit that we may give ourselves to your services, show your love in the world, and together build your church. That we may be of one Body through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Action Make a list of the commitments you have and prioritise them. How is your time spent in relation to the commitments you have? 03.01.2022 This week we invite you to consider in prayer that Together We are not lacking in any spiritual gifts please take the time to read and reflect daily and join us on Zoom on Wednesday evening 7:30pm as we reflect and pray together using this weeks card. We are not lacking in any spiritual gifts Self-Reflection * What gifts do you need to rediscover? * What gifts (spiritual and material) do you have to share and how can you do so? Scripture: Ephesians 4.4-13 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. 7 But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it is said, When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people. 9 (When it says, He ascended, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) 11 The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. Reflection A Gift, beautifully wrapped, paper and bow; a delight to look at and receive. Unless un-wrapped it remains just a pretty parcel. The gift needs to be opened, explored, used and experienced. Your gifts are given to you, to be grown and shared for you to give to others as a gift of care and love. That others may come to know the beauty of God is found in the giving and receiving of the loving gifts we share. Prayer We praise you and we bless you, our risen Lord Jesus, for as you were sent by the Father , so you send us. Equip your people with the gifts to fulfil our calling that we may love as you loved, serve as you served, and willingly follow wherever you lead. To you, Lord Jesus, gifting your people, be honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Action Act upon your self-reflection. Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82341865907 Meeting ID: 823 4186 5907 Passcode: 366366 Together We are called into fellowship. Self-Reflection * How do you experience fellowship with God? * In what ways is God calling you into fellowship with others? Scripture: 1 John 1.3-7 3 We declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; 7 but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. Reflection Children crave best friends. Elders long for companionship. We all together need to know we never walk alone. Christ yearns for much the same, calls us to walk with him to be in fellowship with one another. Calls us to make friends not enemies. To stand in light rather than stumble in the darkness. We all are invited to the table as we are, lost, lonely, broken and forgiven to share in the fellowship of Christ, friends, brothers and sisters equal in God’s eye. Prayer Father of love, you have called us into the fellowship of your Son and appointed us to bear witness to the gospel. By the grace of your Spirit, enable us to overcome our divisions and dwell together in unity so that our joy may be complete, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 16.11.2021 What is this old building on Princes Road? Was it a church? Most people assume this fine old building by the round-a-bout on the corner of Princes Road and East Terrace at Kingswood was a church. Not so, although built by the Parish of Mitcham, it was in fact a school. On Thursday, 10th April 1890 the Countess of Kintore, wife of the Governor, the Rt. Hon. the Earl of Kintore, laid the foundation stone of the St Michael’s Day School. This impressive building, with its high-...pitched roof, was constructed of local sandstone and was designed by the architectural firm of D. Garlick and Son (who also designed the nearby Mitcham Institute). The parish had been running a school for several years in a cottage in Welbourne Street, and its 77 students were the first to attend the new school, which was completed within 4 months. For the next 60 years the building was used as a Day School during the week and a Sunday School on Sundays. It was also the Parish Hall where various groups met, and was used as an entertainment venue for concerts, fetes, wedding receptions, displays etc. Tennis and netball courts were built on adjoining land. In mid-1948 the Day School ceased to operate as a primary school, but then continued on as a kindergarten for another five years. As a parish hall the old Day School suited neither the St Michael’s end of the parish nor the daughter church of St Wilfrid on Belair Road. After years of debate and legal arguments the property was sold at auction in September 1979 and the decision made to build a new hall in the grounds of St Michael’s.
