25.01.2022 Winki yesty arvo on the "red tip".
25.01.2022 Were working through some back pain with Hamish. This movement is designed to use the deep stabilization system whilst hinging at the hip. The challenge is to fold at the hip without any avoidance or compensations elsewhere in the body (especially spine). Were also working on getting more input from his gluts. Surfers - (especially old crusty ones) you need this exercise! * If youre walking sideways with a band around your knees, ask more questions!
25.01.2022 Micks a surfer with a history of back pain. If you look at his starting position his lumbar spine is locked in extension which is his pain pattern. So for Mick I ask him to slightly flex his lumber spine into a more neutral position. This will awaken the Deep Stabilizing System. This is super challenging whilst hanging. Hes also depressing and protracting his shoulders which helps to offset some of the postural changes that occur after years of paddling.
23.01.2022 Heres a little movement intelligence drill that integrates lots of functional positioning. The first game was catching the stick as close to the ground as possible, in as functional position as possible. The second game was catching the stick after it had rebounded off the ground. ... Why? Whats being trained ? The main intention was to lower the centre of gravity with the stick, compressing through the legs rather than rounding and hanging off the spine. Integrated ankle, knee and hip synergy and coordination Multi plane speed /agility, and balance Timing, rhythm and flow But number 1.... and above all else - Its fun and feels good. If the training you are doing doesnt contribute to your movement intelligence then why do it?
22.01.2022 Heres Chiara opening up the shoulders. Could your shoulders tolerate these forces? Another ancestral movement that the modern man struggles with. We share 98.8% the same DNA as a chimp. Get chimpy.... Ps - if you surf or swim and want to paddle better, use monkey bars, rings and ropes daily and you will notice results fast.
22.01.2022 This is Andy inverted. After this shot, he did it with no hands but I didnt get the photo. You just have to believe me.
21.01.2022 My son reckons if you zoom in, it looks like my head has been cut and paste on someone elses body. Masterful skill by snowfoto.
21.01.2022 Tip of the hat to Sensei Joe Thambu. This is an Aikido training drill that I learnt from Joe more than 15 years ago. The risk of getting knuckled keeps it real. @daniellerowarth up for trying anything as usual.
21.01.2022 Working with the athletes from Saltwater Institute yesterday. We explored some of the principles of Parkour which transfer really nicely to surfing. A rich learning environment, particularly around risk and comfort zones.

20.01.2022 Heres a little snippet from a session I ran at the the annual Bellroy conference. We had a blast going from focusing on self to working in teams and then finally working with the whole team of 70 people! Can you hear the shrieks of laughter? Dont underestimate the importance of being playful and joyful at work. ... If your business wants to develop its people in different and unique ways, Check out https://www.livingperformance.org
20.01.2022 After 10 hours in the rig, double down ball in the Woolys car park helped keep the sanity. I like the sound the balls make.
19.01.2022 Back to back at Nemmies.
19.01.2022 Remember the "milkshake" that kids would do on the monkey bars at school. So much good stuff happening with this movement. Ive asked Adam to try to generate all his force from his centre (core). This circular core coordination combined with hanging creates awesome dynamic lengthening through the shoulder girdle. Looks crazy, feels good. (thats why kids do it)
19.01.2022 Quiet determined focus. Heres the Saltwater Institute kids cat crawling at Jan Juc.
17.01.2022 Next Sunday Oct 15th family and friends can come along to to fun day of surfing, live music, yoga, great food and good vibes at Torquay beach. The purpose of the event is to connect positive like minded people, have a hell of a time and support mental health awareness. All money raised will go towards mental health charity livin.org. There is fun surf comp on the day that everyone can get involved in no matter what level youre at. Check out this http://thefuturephase.com....au/anewwave/ Yours truly will be running some fun mindful movement activities on the day to help promote the importance of connecting with self and others. 14.01.2022 This is Bruce right on his edge. We gradually built up to this height over time. Impressive jump for someone north of 50. Stuff Bruce.
12.01.2022 This wave was actually 20 foot when I took off on it. Photo just doesnt do it justice.
12.01.2022 My ankles are a little worn out from years of footy, skating and surfing. This has lead to a loss of ankle dorsi flexion. I really notice how this lack of flexion limits my surfing. My front foot/leg doesnt compress as much as Id like during turns and so the movement is transferred elsewhere in the body (hip and spine). Imagine an ankle that could move like a wrist....coordinated, responsive, articulate and stable. Anyway, some people dont give a shit about this but Im in...terested in whats possible and how I can influence it for myself and others. I work with people every day who are dealing with pain. No matter how far gone you think you are functionally, you can always improve your capacities. Always. These are some of the movements Ive been exploring. I went for a surf at small crappy Jan Juc straight after going through this program and was blown away at how different (for the better) my body felt. Particularly backhand bottom turn. Yeeew. Note - a global approach is critical when trying to influence specific joint mobility....thats why theres some stuff in there related to hips and knees.
12.01.2022 Jarv with some nice body talk.
11.01.2022 Sagittal Plain stability. I like Adams poise and control in this clip. I also like his big hair. Stuff mate.
11.01.2022 Another one from a few weeks ago at Winki.
09.01.2022 This was a recent session I lead for the annual @bellroy conference. The theme for the conference was "comfort zone expansion" so we explored a mixture of different practices that took people to their "edge". Such a great conference working with people who were open, committed and joyful. There were 70 people who were involved in this group balance.

08.01.2022 2 days of rich learning on the Gold Coast for the Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) Flow course. Here Im in the masterful hands of Dr Michael Rintala. Hes cuing me through a developmental movement sequence. Synergy, timing, coordination, support and stability whilst hes doing soft tissue release ! Ive been working with the DNS approach for 15 years, and like all nuanced type work, it takes time to integrate and understand. Many conventional models in movement/...rehab/ treatment/ therapy and training look at reducing the body into component parts. Train this muscle, do this exercise....etc. This is a partial approach which leads to partial gains. When the approach influences global patters via the Central Nervous System, the results are far more potent. Ill post some more clips once in a while.... See more
08.01.2022 If you want to turn a mediocre floater into a good one, puff your cheeks out. It brings a certain intensity to the maneuver.
07.01.2022 Heres some of the lads from Patagonia. We spent the morning unlocking the body (and mind) with movement and bodywork. We then took this clarity into a conversational session around their own business performance. Clarity, creativity, openness, inspiration and motivation come from allowing more space. Movement is the antidote to head clutter and noise With this in mind....the more space we can create through the body (muscles and joints), the more space we create in the mind.... Then all sorts of things become possible. More and more Im working with businesses combining movement and conversation to help them achieve real results. If you want to know more check out livingperformance.org Cheers
07.01.2022 Ripper day at the @a_new_wave_ surf event today at Torquay for @livinorg. We even took out the C grade final. Rare family shot!
06.01.2022 Had a ripping day with the staff at WMC Accounting Our Living Performance program combines movement and conversion to bring the best out in people and their teams. One of the topics we explored today was the triggers of stress and some practical solutions that people can use in their own lives. Here weve got the team exploring functional breathing. If youd like to know more check out livingperformance.org
05.01.2022 Breathing session this week with some of the groms from Torquay Boardriders. This kind of training gives you huge confidence in bigger waves..... the skills in composure, relaxation and self regulation are transferable to any challenging life situation.
04.01.2022 Heres the team from the EP Group. These guys are Exercise Physiologists working specifically with pain. I lead them through some Breathing Dynamics, Central Axis Mobility, Body Mapping and Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization Its promising that more and more, the findings of science are linking with Wisdom Traditions like Yoga, Thai Chi , Chi Kung, Martial Arts, Bodywork, Meditation etc... Understandings that are thousands of years old are now being acknowledged and proven... as scientific facts. Some examples of these are - Gut Intuition and intelligence ( Brain - Gut connection) - ancient Taoists have called this area The Second Brain for 10 Thousand years Whim Hoff Technique ( the research stacks up ) is all basically derivatives of Yoga ( not the cold emersion though) Mindfulness- phenomenal world wide results ( my kids do it after recess at school) is built on understandings from Eastern Religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism Acupuncture (covered by health insurance now) evolved in ancient China for those who couldnt open energetic pathways (meridians) via meditation. DNS ( Developmental Kinesiology) - many of the foundational positions are very similar to Yoga
02.01.2022 Learning through the body with the Saltwater Institute athletes.
