14.01.2022 THE FALL CYCLE Did you know 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 experience at least one fall per year. Falls are the leading cause of deaths from injury for people aged 65 and over. ... The most common injuries from a fall are injuries to the head (26%) and to the hip and thigh (22%) In around 25% cases, hip fractures result in death and of those who survive, around one third of them never regain complete mobility. Falls tend to follow a pattern: Fall > loss of confidence >reduction in physical activity > less able to get around > more risk of falling > fall. There are a number of risk factors for falls in the elderly; 1. Activity muscle weakness through lack of exercise or physical activity 2. Footwear and clothing problems caused by unsuitable footwear 3. Eyes Vision problems: poor eyesight or using incorrect glasses which can result in poor vision. 4. Balance Poor balance which can cause difficulty in walking 5. Medications the side-effects of some medication or mix of medications 6. Health factors memory, arthritis, Incontinence, Parkinson’s disease, poor nutrition and confidence (fear of falling) 7. Environment Home Safety Hazards in and around the home and in public places. A number of falls prevention strategies have been shown to reduce the incidence and risk of falls in the community. Physio can help by developing an individualised exercise program, hydrotherapy water based exercise program, and balance specific training. This will help maintain good muscle strength, improve joint mobility and stability and maintain bone strength. Call 4933 6895 or book online at www.mitchellphysio.com.au
