24.01.2022 Here’s 5 reasons why we should be building a hydrogen industry here in Wollongong. 1. Hydrogen can store renewable energy 2. That means we can become a green energy exporter (instead of a coal exporter!) 3. It can be used to replace coal in steel making... 4. It can power planes, trucks and cars 5. It can be made using recycled waste water These are the jobs of the future and we want them here in Wollongong!

23.01.2022 We recently launched our 'Trees for the Future' campaign and so far 132 people have registered for a FREE tree in front of their home. Here's the tally so far: ... Horsley: 44 homes Dapto & Brownsville: 44 homes Kanahooka: 31 homes Koonawarra: 3 homes Haywards Bay: 3 homes Plus another 7 people from nearby suburbs of Huntley, Avondale and Wongawilli. Don’t be left green with envy, make sure you sign up by Christmas to be a part of the 250 new street trees we are aiming to plant in and around the suburbs of Dapto in Autumn next year. Register your interest: https://our.wollongong.nsw.gov.au/street-trees Don't live in the Daptop area, but keen to get involved? Visit https://wollongong.nsw.gov.au/urban-greening to learn more.

19.01.2022 Big night for us at Council tonight!

19.01.2022 This is a very disappointing decision. Wollongong Coal are one of the dodgiest mine operators out there. They pollute our creeks, are on the brink of financial collapse, claim not to know (or care) if their coal is themal coal (causing climate change), are wanting to mine directly under the water catchment AND they barely even employ anyone. This coal mine is right in our backyard and we need to stop the expansion - they have done enough damage already.

18.01.2022 More good news from this morning - this plan will get NSW to 75% renewable energy. After so many years campaigning for this to happen, it is extraordinary to finally see the floodgates beginning to open.

18.01.2022 #ThrowbackThurday 5 years ago I was collecting seeds for my Conservation and Land Management Cert 3 at TAFE. I had been working in the environment sector for a decade but had only studied creative arts and journalism at uni and I needed some qualifications in the field I was working in. I studied my my Cert 3 online (before it was fashionable!) and was able to do it while I was on maternity leave. It was bloody hard, learning plant identification without being in the classroom, but had some brilliant teachers who were always available to help over the phone or by email when I needed it. Thank you TAFE, you are amazing, for young people learning trades, for people changing professions and for people like me needing new skills for work. Can we please find TAFE again? It was world class and could be again. #stoptafecuts #nationaltafeday

18.01.2022 Hey this is good news! The future is here...

17.01.2022 The solution to climate change is political. And the problem is political. These clowns, who are in charge, are spending public money to intervene in the market and keep the fossil fuel industry on life support even though it poses a deadly danger to our future. https://www.illawarramercury.com.au//pm-avoids-environmen/

17.01.2022 This looks amazing, and because it’s on Zoom you don’t even need to travel : )

16.01.2022 I’m excited about these changes, which mean that more businesses will be able to trade later, especially art galleries, performance spaces, restaurants, small bars and retail. "You could go and wander around in a bookshop at midnight, or go and see a play... or if you go somewhere to see a band or a play, you might be able to get dinner at 10pm instead of having to eat at 5pm, Cr Cox said.

16.01.2022 It won’t happen overnight, but it took Copenhagen a few decades too. This is a really significant start, and I’m glad to be part of it.

14.01.2022 Great news! Keep an eye out for your kitchen caddy arriving soon.

14.01.2022 Lucky we have people like Jess in our community to go to the trouble to get the water tested, or this would never even be made public let alone investigate. The toxic and even radioactive cocktail found in this drain is terrifying.

14.01.2022 Feeling hopeful for the future, standing with young people in Wollongong today, demanding good jobs and a safe climate. This vision is entirely possible with the political will to make it happen. #tomorrowmovement

13.01.2022 "Anyone in Thirroul will tell you, there has been too much development, too quickly, without enough consideration given to the transport infrastructure," Councillor Cox said.

11.01.2022 Last night Wollongong Council staff provided an exciting update on their FOGO roll out plans. Not long now till these kitchen caddies will be getting delivered to households* and you'll see the FOGO collection truck in our streets!

09.01.2022 We are living through the biggest mass unemployment seen in my lifetime. We should be making education FREE, not hiking the fees. Take one minute to send an email to the Senate crossbench today tinyurl.com/uni-fees Thanks to Senator Mehreen Faruqi for your tireless work on this.

09.01.2022 Tonight Wollongong City Councillors unanimously resolved to write to the Independent Planning Commission to lodge an objection to the Russell Vale Underground E...xpansion Proposal. UPDATE: You can too with the submission deadline now Monday Nov 2nd at 5pm. 09.01.2022 Join other local parents and sign this petition to make our streets safe for kids again. Yes it means cars will need to slow down a bit. And yes we need a commitment from Council to start taking this seriously and building pedestrian crossings to connect footpaths especially in the vicinity of schools. I hate it that my kids can't walk to school by themselves simply because they can't cross the road. https://safe-streets-to-school.org/

09.01.2022 I think the calls for our beaches to be restricted to ‘locals only’ are really uncool. "I don't think that we're full, and I think that we can still be welcoming to visitors in our city," Cr Mithra Cox said. "Our beaches are free for anybody to use, including people from Western Sydney. It is very hot if you live in western Sydney, people live there because they can't afford a house near the beach, and they have just as much right to come to the beach and have a swim on a Sunday as anybody else," Cr Cox said.

09.01.2022 Cr Mithra Cox said the opportunities for Wollongong, in developing green jobs and renewables, "are huge" and said the council had signalled to industry that "we are willing, we are ready and we want to work on this future".

08.01.2022 Sunday funday. Making banners for #schoolstrike4climate

08.01.2022 Exciting progress for the region! Wollongong Council is poised to adopt a comprehensive plan to tackle climate change locally, following up from setting emissio...ns reductions targets last year. 92 specific actions are proposed across leadership and planning, energy efficiency and renewables, transport, waste, and trees. Today is the last day of the draft plan's exhibition period. (Search "wollongong climate plan".) Please send a message to staff and Councillors that you support the actions in this draft plan. Councillors and staff are influenced by community feedback. A short email such as "I support the climate mitigation plan because..." will make a difference. Send an email by 5pm today (Wed 12 August) to [email protected]. See more

05.01.2022 Annoyed with the lack of action as toxic coal waste enters waterways afer a recent South 32 dam failure, local campaigners take to Paul Scullys office and the o...ffices of the EPA with bottled water samples... but no-one would talk to them The ABC has picked up the story and we hope that with added pressure from the media and public that polluters are not just given a slap on wrist fine Protesting is powerful #wollongong #figtree #EPA #pollution #coalcoast #nominesunderdams #thegreens See more

05.01.2022 Reclaiming streets for people. It’s happening everywhere...

05.01.2022 This is on tomorrow. And ridiculously the ad has been rejected by Facebook because it is apparently about a sensitive topic that may influence an election result!?!? Seriously. You can publish lies and racists conspiracies but not a link to a webinar about green technology!

02.01.2022 I am confident that at some point our self interest will kick in and we will pull out all stops to reduce emissions. The main question is if we will do it in time. With 1.44 degrees of warming already reached, our window of time to act is now alarmingly small.

02.01.2022 This is exciting but I’m worried that Wollongong is being left behind in the race to decarbonisation and green steel production.

02.01.2022 Reasons to be cheerful. AGL are seeking approval to replace the Liddell Power Station with a big battery - bigger than the one in SA. In 2010 I was pregnant, and at a protest camp to close this dirty power station, one of the dirtiest in the country. It seemed like an insurmountable challenge at the time. Tony Abbot even suggested renationalising this power station, just to keep it open even though it had become financially non-viable. And now it looks set to provide much ne...eded dispatchable power, making the renewable grid more stable, and using the high voltage power lines that connect the site to the grid. And of course, it will need employees to run and manage the battery. Also, it’s my birthday. https://reneweconomy.com.au/agl-seeks-approval-for-500mw-b/

02.01.2022 It's one week away! https://www.tickettailor.com/events/heroinesfestival/440586

01.01.2022 "I am regularly contacted by parents who are really frustrated and particularly want to see zebra crossings so kids have right of way to cross the road and lowering of speed limits, Greens Councillor Mithra Cox said. "Council has done good work in building footpaths in the last couple of years, and it is noticeable to see the increase in footpaths but they need to be supported by safe crossings."

01.01.2022 This looks pretty exciting for Wollongong. New jobs in the renewable energy sector, and a plan to export green Hydrogen from Port Kembla.
