There are over 2.65 million family and friend carers in Australia providing 36 million hours of care and support every week to a family member or friend. It has been a difficult time for all of us as COVID-19 continues to affect our daily lives, and we know it’s been especially hard for people with mito. 13.01.2022 The Mito Foundation Scientific and Medical Advisory Panel is comprised of world class researchers and clinicians in the field of mitochondrial disease. The role of the panel is to advise the Mito Foundation Board on how best to apply funds raised, and assess the merits of various applications for Mito Foundation grants. https://www.mito.org.au/smap/ Today, we would like to shine the spotlight on Dr Doug Lingard AM.... Doug is the Mito Foundation Chairman, a member of the Mito Foundation Nominations Committee and a founding director of the Mito Foundation. Doug and his wife Margie established the foundation 11 years ago after their daughter Rose was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, and found there was nowhere to turn for help. Doug is a Radiologist & Nuclear Physician who has been active in both public and private medicine in Australia for over 30 years. He is a cofounder of the largest Diagnostic Imaging practice in Australia, Pittwater Radiology & Medical Imaging Australasia Ltd. Doug has been awarded a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in last year's Queen's Birthday Honours List. Thank you Doug for lending your time and expertise to drive our quest for improved diagnosis, treatments and ultimately cures.

10.01.2022 United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation offers a monthly 'Ask the Mito Doc' webcast series to keep mito patients and families connected to the mitochondrial medical community. Each month, they will highlight a specific topic with a short presentation and allow 20-30 minutes for question and answer time with the clinicians. This is a great online resource that we can access from Australia.The webcasts are worth listening to live, as you can ask a question, but If you can't a...ttend at the scheduled time, just register and you will be sent a link to the recording after the event. 09.01.2022 During World Mitochondrial Disease Week, Jason Brown held a virtual 'Bake Off' Munch for Mito with colleagues at a QBE Insurance Australia team meeting from Singapore, Australia, the United States, Bermuda and the UK involved in sharing their baking skills over an online, COVID Safe gathering! The reach of this global organisation and Jason's passion not only raised awareness of mito but also $1,248, which is being matched by the QBE Foundation! Although Jason does no...t have a personal connection to mito, he attended one of Mito Foundation's fundraising events several years ago and was touched by what he witnessed. So when he received an email regarding World Mitochondrial Disease Week, he wanted to do what he could to help. Thank you so much Jason and the QBE team for raising awareness and funds to support Aussie families living with mito. We're all hungry for treatments and cures for mito. 06.01.2022 We are seeing some very positive media coverage on the topic of mitochondrial donation in the lead-up to the conscience vote on the Mitochondrial Donation Law Reform (Maeve’s Law) Bill 2021 in the coming months. Last night SBS News featured a segment on mitochondrial donation. A special thank you to Elizabeth Tierney for so bravely sharing her story about her baby Cooper, who sadly passed away at just 6 months old. Her story has helped to highlight the real impact of mito and... reinforce the need for legislative change. Haydn and his wife Anne have two children Lani, 20 and Damon, 19 and live in Langwarrin, approximately 50kms from Melbourne’s CBD. Haydn is the Metering Contract Manager for South East Water and volunteers on the Langwarrin Junior Football Club committee. Their daughter, Lani was diagnosed with mito and has chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO). She wants to be a primary school teacher.
