21.01.2022 The 2021 Gathering Overseas travel may be off the cards for Aussies and Kiwi’s for this year with the exception of the bubble between our two countries. So, I... for one, am looking forward to the Gathering in Melbourne - come September 2021 - as an opportunity to re-engage with friends and fellow Will-Machado Jiu Jitseiro’s from both sides of the ditch. I am super fortunate to have met a lot of very exceptional people on the landscape I inhabit. One such person is the very talented ‘Meerkatsu’ (Seymour Yang) who just sent this to me as a wonderful gesture of solidarity and friendship - from the United Kingdom. So here we have it - this year’s Official Gathering T-shirt - is all set. Carve the date into your calendar now - September 11th - 2021. See more

20.01.2022 One of the more memorable leglock battles in MMA history.

19.01.2022 Here it is responsibility. I used to think that the most important responsibility of a teacher was to provide good information. I no longer think this. Then I... came to believe that the most important responsibility of a teacher was to provide the latest, most ‘cutting-edge’ information. I no longer believe this. Then I knew, for certain, that the most important responsibility of a teacher was to teach students how to become great learners, so they could not only learn what I had to show them, but could become more adept in other areas of their lives as well. I no longer believe this. The most important responsibility of a teacher is to create and maintain an environment that allows for great exchange of information and ideas. Sure, there are a multitude of coaching/teaching methodologies/habits there is an imperative for the teacher to remain abreast of current developments his his or her field - but if the class-room isn’t the type of environment that is conducive to learning - then many of those wonderful ‘teaching/coaching ideas’ will fall on deaf ears and blind eyes. I want to create an environment (mat) that is conducive to learning and experimentation - and environment that is challenging yes, but one in which the students are there as much for each other as they are for themselves. This sounds like an easy thing to achieve - and for the most part it can be - as long as we keep a vigilant eye out for anyone running counter to what we are trying to achieve. I cannot stand cliques - I cannot stand people who only respect those with more talent than themselves - I cannot stand aloofness, overblown ego’s and discourtesy. I love - openness, helpfulness, encouragement, humility, self-deprecation, good manners, respect, integrity, selflessness. I want to create a classroom that is free of those things I cannot stand - and replete with those things that I love. That's all folks! Pic with my long time friend and BJJ coach - Rigan Machado.

19.01.2022 Coachable vs Un-coachable Un-coachable - can also mean un-employable or to put a more positive spin on it - highly-coachable people are readily employable. D...eveloping aptitude for ’teachability’ - is a highly desirable trait (I can only imagine) on the job-landscape. In life, we need to be able to learn, adapt, acquire new skills, etc. The people who are better at doing that - usually live better lives. I insist on this on the mat. I steer all of my students toward this idea coaxing and nursing them toward being more and more coachable. I do it, not only to get better results on the mat - but because I know, without a shadow of a doubt that it will improve their lives and the way they live them.

08.01.2022 As the pandemic continues around the world, the threat of a COVID-19 outbreak in Western Australia is something that we need to be prepared for. Even if it's un...likely, it's vital that we have the protections in place that we need for the worst case scenario. So, in line with health advice, from 5 December, particular WA venues and businesses will be required to maintain mandatory contact registers to support COVID-19 contact tracing. These records will ONLY be used for the purpose of contact tracing, should it be required, and will only be kept for 28 days. Businesses or venues required to keep a contact register include: Food and licenced venues (restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, taverns, nightclubs) Gyms, indoor sporting centres and pools Places of worship and funeral parlours Beauty and personal care services including hairdressers and barbers Galleries and museums Cinemas, theatres and other entertainment venues Auction houses and real estate inspections Community facilities, libraries and halls Zoos and amusement parks Function centres Accommodation facilities that already have check-in arrangements in place (i.e. hostels, hotels, large camp grounds) The details required for the contact register will include the date, arrival time, names and telephone numbers. Any person aged 16 years and over who attends a business, place or premises, listed above, including patrons, staff, volunteers and contractors will be required to register their contact details. Records are not required to be collected for people collecting takeaway or children under 16 years. To help make checking in to venues as easy as possible and reduce the burden on businesses, we've released a free app, SafeWA. SafeWA is a digital COVID-19 contact register system, which uses unique QR codes for venues that patrons can scan to register their attendance. You can get the app now on Android or iPhone at https://safewa.health.wa.gov.au The app is a free, easy, contactless solution, but it is not mandatory. Alternative formats for contact registers are available, including other electronic tools or a paper-based system, depending on what is suitable for the business, venue or individual. This step to reintroduce contact registers was considered in consultation with industry and business to establish a long term strategy to keep our State safe, given the ongoing impact of the virus internationally. More information on contact registers and the SafeWA app can be found at www.wa.gov.au/safewa We've done so well as a State - and we've achieved so much by following the advice and working together. Contact registers might not always be convenient, but we know that in the event of an outbreak they would make a huge difference. Together, by following these guidelines staying vigilant, we can keep WA safe and strong.

02.01.2022 Lineage One of my very favourite days of the year is only two weeks away. Seven days into September sees our annual Gathering, take place in Melbourne. Teams ...and coaches from all over Australia and New Zealand, get together for what really amounts to being our annual Machado BJJ Downunder family picnic. A chance to compete in the friendliest of settings, a time to catch up with old friends and re-affirm our solidarity, an opportunity to spend time on the mat with Professor Rigan Machado . it is a weekend of wonderment. I hope to see many, many of you there. Lineage - is important. Our roots in many ways, define who we are . be a part of history. Saturday September 7th!!!
