17.01.2022 Stay warm today, it’s a little bit chilly in the Highlands!

17.01.2022 We were able to catch up with someone very special this week as we celebrated our 65th Anniversary. Kevin Long is currently the longest serving Mittagong RSL Club Member, having joined the Club 59 years ago! Kevin joining us this week was made even more special by the fact that he has such a long and personal connection with the Club his father Bernie Long joined the Mittagong RSL Sub Branch in 1945, was a Member on the committee that established the licensed RSL Club and... went on to become a driving force in the acquisition of the land the Club currently sits on. Bernie was the President of the Mittagong RSL Sub Branch from 1965-1984, President of Mittagong RSL Club from 1977-1984 and was honoured Life Membership in both organisations. Having grown up around the Club Kevin has memories of Mittagong RSL spanning many years now and has some great stories to tell, especially about his Dad who I think would be very proud of our Club today!

16.01.2022 Wishing our beloved Nancy a very happy 94th birthday today! We did a Member profile on Nancy in this year's annual report to share with everyone just how special Nancy is... A very familiar face around the Club, Nancy has been a Member of Mittagong RSL Club for 37 years now, having joined shortly after arriving in the Highlands. Throughout this time, the Club has come to play a very significant role in her life. Over the years we have come to learn a lot about Nancy, with... stories upon stories of her travels across the world as a war bride and her experiences living all over Australia as her late husband worked on the trains - Nancy has lived quite an extraordinary life, and can certainly tell a good tale about it. Now at the tender age of 94, Nancy has unfortunately seen the passing of many friends over the years, and with no family in the area it can be hard to get out and about to see people. Our Club is able to provide Nancy the opportunity to socialise, which - as is the case for many elderly members of our community - has become one of the most important facets of her wellbeing. You can find Nancy most weekdays at the Club; busy playing bingo, trying her luck at our Monday and Thursday Raffles, or catching up for weekly lunches with friends. Among these weekly lunches is a standing appointment with the ladies of the Women’s Auxiliary. While the organisation itself is no longer in formal operation, connecting with these friends whom she shares so many commonalities with and has known for many years has been hugely important to Nancy through the years. The Clubs shutdown during March last year affected Nancy greatly - a social person by nature, the sudden isolation left Nancy, like many others, feeling quite down. The solitude of social distancing was a far cry from Nancy’s normal at Mittagong RSL where she is welcomed by a chorus of greetings and conversation when she enters. Very relieved that a sense of normality has returned, Nancy has been able to resume her normal activities now that life at the Club is back in full swing, although it appears her luck at bingo hasn’t seemed to improve... Nancy is held in very high regard by everyone involved at Mittagong RSL - a friendly face for staff and patrons alike, a very involved Member of our community, and a great supporter of the Clubs many different endeavours over the years we are so lucky to have had such loyal patronage from Nancy. Wishing you all the best for the year ahead Nancy - see you at the raffle tonight!

Our Club has a strict set of CovidSafe policies and procedures in place, and we regularly assess all activity taking place throughout the Club to ensure these policies are upheld at all times. Upon assessment of these events, bearing in mind how p...opular our Christmas Meat Raffles are, we have made the decision to change the dates of our Christmas Dinners to the 4 Wednesday evenings before Christmas (December 2nd, 9th, 16th, & 23rd) we feel this is the most appropriate course of action to ensure our high standards of health and safety are being met at all times. 11.01.2022 I am not a badge of honour, I am not a racist smear, I am not a fashion statement, To be worn but once a year, I am not glorification... Of conflict or of war. I am not a paper ornament A token, I am more. I am a loving memory, Of a father or a son, A permanent reminder Of each and every one. I'm paper or enamel I'm old or shining new, I'm a way of saying thank you, To every one of you. I am a simple poppy A Reminder to you all, That courage faith and honour, Will stand where heroes fall. - Paul Hunter A few photos of the Remembrance Day Service held at the Club this morning. Lest We Forget

09.01.2022 Welcome back to Habitat! So nice to see this again - Our kids Habitat play area has officially reopened!

09.01.2022 Another staff profile! Today we've got one of our Pastry Chefs Mitchell! Mitchell was 16 years old and fresh out of high school when he started at the Club. Initially a member of our dishwash team, he remained in that role for 10 months before submitting his successful application to become an apprentice chef. Mitchell, now an essential member in our team of pastry chefs, is a glowing example of someone who needed just a bit of extra help, was courageous enough to ask fo...r it and now reaps the rewards. As Mitchell, a visual learner by nature, made his way through TAFE he excelled in the practical elements of the course, but when it came to the theory, he did encounter some difficulties. Mitchell was up-front and honest about his struggles with our Catering Manager Alan Cunynghame, who was able to organise a support person to sit in with him during his classes to ensure Mitchell was able to learn to the best of his abilities. In the initial stages of his employment here, Alan was able to recognise that Mitchell held all of the essential qualities of a great employee and understood that by keeping Mitchell, the Club was gaining a real asset. In order for Mitchell to maximise his opportunities to be successful here, a decision was made between Mitchell and Alan to transition from our downstairs main kitchen to the pastry kitchen upstairs which allowed him to work in a smaller, more one on one environment. Over the next 3 years Mitchell worked diligently through his apprenticeship, supported by Alan, and Duncan Brown the head of the pastry kitchen, who would regularly take the time to go through what Mitchell had learned in TAFE and ensure his thorough understanding of the topics. Today, Mitchell is a talented, responsible and important member of our catering team. He steps in as the leader of the pastry kitchen when Duncan is away, without there ever being a drop in quality or production. He finds satisfaction in being able to pass on his knowledge and understanding to our new pastry apprentices, and takes pride in the fact he can confidently perform his role at a high standard. Mitchell now uses his experiences to stress the fact that anybody who needs a bit of extra help, just needs to ask for it. Watching Mitchell thrive in the opportunity he was given is a great story of perseverance and success! You do a wonderful job here at the Club Mitchell, and we are so grateful to have you as part of the team!

05.01.2022 As you may remember, our Club was named as dual finalists in the ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Awards this year. We are very pleased to let our Club Members know that at the awards ceremony last night, we were named as a joint winner in the Bushfire Support category, and our General Manager Craig Madsen received a Highly Commended award in the Heart of the Community Category. While we were very surprised to take home the trophy, it truly is a well-deserved accolade for our Staf...f, Management & Board of Directors for their hard work throughout the bushfire season. Our staff went above and beyond time and time again to help those taking refuge in the Club, to help feed the RFS & NSWFS, and to help our community find a bit of comfort in all of the devastation. There were a record number of entries in the awards this year, and Clubs right across the state did truly amazing things to help the Bushfire effort, so to receive this award and be formally recognised by our peers on the biggest night for our industry is no small feat. We feel humbled to receive the recognition, and full of pride when reflecting on the team work, selflessness, and dedication displayed by our staff. In the worst of times, you see the best of people and as we look back on the enormity of the 2019/2020 Bushfire season, once again we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the RFS, NSWFS, SES, Emergency Services, Red Cross & Government Agencies for the amazing work they did for us all during this time.

05.01.2022 Today's staff profile is for a very special staff member, Donna, who has been with us at the Club for 31 years! Donna, originally from Mount Prichard, settled in the Southern Highlands in 1989 and began working at our Club in the same year. From her beginnings in the change box, Donna’s role has evolved a number of times, and eventually led to the role she’s held for the last 15 years as one of our Duty Managers. In a role where you are the one turned to in times of pressure..., our Duty Managers are required to wear a number of hats. The measure and professionalism Donna portrays on a day to day basis are indicative of her as a Duty Manager, and as a person. From operation of the TAB - a job that Donna has a great passion for, to administering lifesaving CPR, Donna’s ability to stay level headed and find a resolution are all crucial in her role and exemplify the extraordinary standard Donna works at every day. As one of our longest serving employees, Donna acknowledges that while the consistent growth of our Club keeps her role refreshing and engaging, it is the relationships that Donna shares with current and former employees that has kept her passion for this job alive. The quality of relationships that Donna holds with other staff members is yet another testament to her wonderful character, Donna is a manager you can turn to for guidance and leadership in the tough moments, that you can share a laugh with, and that you can’t help but respect. Donna’s dedication to her job, willingness to evolve, and skillful management of every situation make her value to our Club indescribable, we are so lucky to have Donna as part of our team and thank her for the many years of dedicated service she has given to our Club!
