11.01.2022 Say hello to this terrific Tawny Frogmouth (the grey on the right)! Rescued by some big-hearted locals, he’s gotten the all-clear from Dr Keith today and is now in the care of our wonderful local WIRES volunteers for rehabilitation. He’ll be back in the Aussie wild in no time! Tawny Fun Facts: did you know Tawny’s are not owls? They don’t have talons and are very gentle, but are nocturnal and are carnivorous, enjoying everything from worms to small mammals, like rodents. Thei...r amazing feathering enables them to camouflage expertly in the Aussie bush, often resting in stealth against a dead branch. The Tawny mates for life; male and female care equally for their chicks. If you’re lucky enough to hear a Tawny at night, they’ll share a suite of calls - depending on their mood. Screeching and screaming in distress or anger; crying and whimpering when fearful or suffering a loss; and purring with their mate during courtship. We are amazed by the terrific Tawny! #tawnyfrogmouth #Australia #wildlife #WIRES #wildliferescue #SouthernHighlands #mittagongvethospital #vetmedicine
11.01.2022 We are always amazed by the generosity of our local community! A huge thank you to the recent donation by one of our generous locals to the FOWAS Donation Station in our vet hospital. A bumper contribution of quality cat food has been collected this week by FOWAS President, Deb Barnes, for the cats at our local animal shelter, awaiting their forever home. Thank you Southern Highlands and keep the kindness flowing! If you are interested in donating food to FOWAS’ animals, you ...can drop off quality cat and dog food (wet or dry) at our Donation Station, during business hours. You can also drop off food to many other locations around the Southern Highlands. Visit fowas.org.au/donations to find out more! @wsc.animal.shelter @fowas.18 #FOWAS #Kindness #SouthernHighlands #cats #catshelter #animalshelter #mittagongvetvethospital
09.01.2022 In recognition of National Reconciliation week 2021: The staff of Mittagong Veterinary Hospital acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which our hospital stands, and pay our respect to their Elders past and present. We also acknowledge our gratitude that we share this land today, our sorrow for the costs of that sharing, and our hope and belief that we can move to place of equity, justice and partnership together. #NRW2021 #MoreThanAWord #Reconciliation #TruthTelling https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-reconciliation-/

07.01.2022 Osteoarthritis WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? Like humans, animals can suffer from osteoarthritis (commonly known as arthritis). And, as with humans, it doesn’t just impact the elderly. Younger dogs can also suffer from this incredibly painful condition. So, what exactly is osteoarthritis? As the name suggests, ‘osteo’ refers to bone, and ‘itis’ refers to inflammation. A degenerative disease, it progressively gets worse over time if left untreated. How common is arthritis? Arthritis a...ffects at least one in five and is the number one cause of chronic pain in dogs. It can significantly impact their quality of life, dramatically reducing their ability to walk, run, jump and play. What causes arthritis? The number one cause of arthritis is wear and tear on the protective layer of the bone, called cartilage. This wear and tear creates inflammation within the joint, leading to pain and further degradation of the cartilage cells. Developmental issues in younger dogs, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, are other common causes of arthritis. That’s why it’s so important to ensure your young dog maintains a healthy weight (go easy on the treats!) and is fed a high-quality diet. Keep an eye out for our next post where we’ll talk about identifying the early signs of arthritis, and what to do about them. If you think your dog may be suffering from arthritis, please call us for a check-up. Mittagong Veterinary Hospital 48722028 #arthritis #4cytepistalis #mittagongvethospital See more
