24.01.2022 As we wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month, we hope that over the last few weeks you've been able to take some tips from our wonderful staff across the Miwatj region about how to make a habit of looking out for yourself and others. It’s important to take time to check in on yourself and your loved ones, now more than ever - check out this video Menzies School of Health Research created to highlight the importance of culture, family and community in maintaining good mental health for everyone.

24.01.2022 Future Saltwater/Galiwin'ku Youth Band had a manymak weekend at Barunga Festival and performing on Saturday night! 23.01.2022 Lest We Forget. Today we take a moment to reflect on the commitment and sacrifices made by those who have fallen, those who have served and those who are currently in active service for our country on this ANZAC Day. We acknowledge all our people who fought for their Country against invasion and colonisation, and those who have fought overseas. We commemorate their service.

23.01.2022 Introducing Justine, our Tackling Indigenous Smoking Manager, who has been with us for a little over a year. We asked Justine what mental health means to her and she replied, It’s about a person’s complete wellbeing, and always checking in with how I think, feel and behave. I believe in a holistic approach to mental health looking after your whole person/body; physically, emotionally and spiritually. This year, living in Arnhem Land, although it hasn’t been as restricte...d as the rest of the country, it’s been tough, as I haven’t been able to travel to Victoria to see my family and friends. Justine shared how she takes care of her mental health and we found out that she is a big fan of self-care, things like getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, recharging at home (saying no to events) and getting her hair and nails done! Doing things for myself, makes me feel happy :) She added I also like doing things that keep me grounded such as a beach walk, a swim or a phone call with friends and family and I also love being involved in playing sports in Nhulunbuy. ‘It’s okay, to not be okay’ always ask for help Thank you for sharing Justine

The NDIS was rolled out in the Northern Territory in 2014 and as of September 2020, 3,798 people are receiving NDIS supports in the NT. #DisableStereotypes #MiwatjHealthAboriginalCorporation #NDIS #IDPwD

20.01.2022 We know that food insecurity is widespread in our region and directly impacts people’s ability to eat healthy food. That’s why we’ve developed a Food Security and Nutrition Strategy 2020-2024. With this strategy we hope to take meaningful steps forward to making our communities more food-secure and supporting people to make healthy food choices. Get in touch if you’d like to know more! #nutritionweek #tryfor5 #deadlytucker #miwatjnutrition

19.01.2022 Walking together for a healthy life Joe (Men’s Health Coordinator, Miwatj) Any Miwatj male client is welcome to the Men’s Health Walk. Young or old, all are welcome to join. The Men’s Health walks are at both Garriri (aka Rocky Bay in Yirrkala) and Butjumurru (in Gunyangara). Generally, we have the walks every 4 weeks at each site. The walk is followed by hunting, spear making, yarning and we finish it off with a tasty and healthy lunch. This is a simple physical acti...vity with positive benefits to our health (both the body and the spirit). It is also a great way to meet the men (Aboriginal health workers, Nurses, Doctors) that can help you at the clinic. If you have any questions or are interested in joining please contact Joe on 0417 738 671 or email [email protected] #MiwatjMensHealt #movember2020 #StrongerTogether

19.01.2022 Burritj (mosquitoes) are everywhere this time of year. Burritj can carry diseases such as Barmah Forest virus and Ross River virus as well as a disease called ‘Dengue fever’. The Burritj that carry dengue fever are not in our region so we have our team at Miwatj catching mosquitoes to send to Darwin to make sure it’s not here. We trap mosquitoes to be sent to the NT Government Medical Entomology lab to be identified. For more information please visit your local Miwatj clinic or message us any questions you have. #MiwatjHealth #EnvironmentalHealth

18.01.2022 5. If you have questions about the COVID-19 vaccine, ask your AHP, nurse or doctor. 17.01.2022 We had some great feedback from our recent Remote Trauma Courses in Nhulunbuy with Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation. One participant explained: I really go...t absorbed in the scenarios and it felt real. At the end of each course we recreate a high pressure trauma scenario using life-like mannequins so the participants can use their new skills in a practical setting. The participants work together to apply tourniquets to stop haemorrhaging, create shelters to protect patients from the elements, and maintain airways. TIO - Territory Insurance Office sponsors the program so we can provide it free-of-charge in the most remote pockets of the NT and ensure all Territorians are equipped with the skills to save lives.

Reuben shared that this year with COVID-19, a few changes occurred unexpectedly in his personal life. These changes had an impact on, not only himself, but also his family. 09.01.2022 Yo Nhamirr Bukmak! Remember Nathan Garrawurra, our AHP from the Renal team? Nathan’s been with us for almost three years! To Nathan, mental health means: When you’re not thinking straight and don’t take the time for yourself or seek help then it ends up affecting your well-being. Last year Nathan and his family relocated to Darwin from Elcho Island, he shared how stressful the move was and he had a lot of doubt, mostly worried that his family wouldn’t like Darwin, howeve...r his family are enjoying living in Darwin. Nathan said I always try to take time for myself and sometimes I go for a walk to clear my head. Sometimes when I can’t think right or I had a bad day, when I come home and see my kids laughing it makes me forget whatever that was bothering me because I want to always make sure my family is happy and that makes me happy. Nathan’s advice is if anyone is feeling unwell or struggling, don’t be afraid to seek help. No shame in it and we are all here to help. Thank you Nathan.

08.01.2022 Meet Christina, one of our dedicated NDIS support coordinators. Christina understands the importance mental health plays in all aspects in a person’s life. Mental health can have an effect on physical health, relationships, work life, social life, gut function and overall wellbeing. Christina shared how this year has been full of changes and her mental health has been challenged greatly, however she constantly reminds herself of how grateful she is for all that she has. She... added, This year has taught me to never let the bump in the road affect your journey. Christina takes care of her mental health by hitting the gym as a way to ease her thoughts and relieve stress, which includes bike rides or beach walks/runs. She also finds writing down her thoughts helpful when her mind has too much to say. Always remember that everyone is struggling through something different, and maybe reaching out could be a great opportunity to share some advice or just be a support for each other. Thank you for sharing Christina.
