20.01.2022 People receiving unemployment benefits are three times as likely to have anxiety or depression as wage earners are, the prime minister said during the speech on Monday, quoting a key finding of the government’s Productivity Commission report. This is not only as a result of financial hardship, but often associated with limited social support, loneliness and a decreased sense of personal control and achievement. The robo-debt fiasco is a neat illustration of this point. It... stands as a clear example of how the government’s tough love approach to disadvantage can quickly metastasise. Designed to raise more than $4 billion in Centrelink debts, many of which never existed, it used an automated income averaging process that was illegal and relied on relentless private debt collectors, all enforced by a bureaucracy callous in its rigidity. Victims of the robo-debt scheme never got their day in court. Much of the battle had already been won by Victoria Legal Aid before Gordon Legal announced the $1.23 billion settlement affecting some 400,000 people on the same day the trial was due to begin in Melbourne. After this settlement, the entire scheme will have cost the Commonwealth about $2 billion. There were never any savings made. See more

16.01.2022 Scott Morrison was sacked as managing director of Tourism Australia in 2006 with a year left to run on his contract. For 14 years the reason for the sacking has remained one of the best kept secrets in Parliament. Now, FoI documents accessed by Jommy Tee reveal the PM either lied about a critical probity report, or numerous government departments and agencies are so incompetent that all of them together, coincidentally, jointly and severally lost it. Morrison had a short-...lived stint in 2000 at KPMG Consulting, although this is not listed on his parliamentary biography, but archived internet records show that he worked for KPMG’s tourism and leisure division. Tony Clark was KPMG’s long-time NSW managing partner (he stepped down in 1998). Clark was simultaneously serving as deputy chairman at Tourism Australia, a position he had long held at TA and its predecessor the Australian Tourist Commission. Clark also headed up the Tourism Australia’s audit committee, which FoI documents reveal made the decision to appoint KPMG as Tourism Australia’s internal auditors in February 2005. Carbon copy criticism What the national audit office found was a carbon copy of the criticism that a 1999 New Zealand audit report had levelled at Scott Morrison when he was head of NZ’s Office of Tourism and Sport. Morrison had moved to NZ in 1998, reporting directly to the NZ tourism minister, as the inaugural director of the office. The NZ minister, Murray McCully, and Morrison were locked in a power struggle with the independent NZ Tourism Board. The NZ audit office report devoted a whole chapter to Morrison’s deceptive behaviour, which involved changing the focus of a consultant’s review to align it with Morrison’s political agenda and without conferring with the board or his minister. Morrison mysteriously departed the NZ Office of Tourism and Sport one year before the end of his contract term. Morrison’s disdain for transparency and the shirking of accountability, so evident during his tenure at Tourism Australia, persists to this day, with his continual deflecting and move along, nothing to see here attitude to journalists asking questions. Given the importance of the KPMG report the question can surely be posed So where the bloody hell is it? Editor’s Note: Detailed questions were put to the Office of the Prime Minister.
15.01.2022 A political scandal over parliamentary culture has spread to the office of Michaelia Cash, who has been accused of sending "attacking and demeaning" messages about a female staffer. Key points: Rachelle Miller claims she was the victim of a "fake redundancy process" instigated to get her out of Michaelia Cash's office Ms Miller is at the centre of complaints against Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge A 14-page workplace bullying complaint was lodged with the Department of... Finance last Thursday Rachelle Miller, who is at the centre of complaints against Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge, also claims she was the victim of a "fake redundancy process" instigated to get rid of her from Senator Cash's office. Ms Miller makes the claims in a 14-page workplace bullying complaint lodged with the Department of Finance and Administration last Thursday, which details allegations against Mr Tudge and Senator Cash. The former Liberal Party staffer joined Senator Cash's office as senior media adviser in November 2017, the day after leaving Mr Tudge's office. At the time, Senator Cash was employment minister as well as minister for industry, innovation and science. Ms Miller had been in a consensual relationship with Mr Tudge while working for him. In her complaint to the Finance Department, she alleges Mr Tudge bullied, belittled and intimidated her. Don’t forget Michaelia Cash threatened to publically name and shame female staffers at the time Rachelle Miller was working in her office the subject of a cruel parliamentary rumour mill and pressure from senior ministers See more

02.01.2022 While robo-debt is one of the most explicit examples of government policy that’s caused harm, the commission’s report draws a portrait of a system that entrenches stress and mental injury. And just as robo-debt was a decision, so are other social policy settings. This policy failure is just proof that the government is happy for people in the welfare system to be constantly brutalised and denied justice. Recognition in all government policies, payments and programs, of t...Continue reading
02.01.2022 An investigation has uncovered concerns of inappropriate behaviour towards women by federal Attorney-General Christian Porter and Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge. The Four Corners report, which the federal government attempted to quash before its airing, found that former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s 2018 bonk ban was aimed at the pair in addition to former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce. The investigation uncovered allegations that Porter made unwanted adv...ances on women and sexist remarks across his career, and was seen with a young female employee of another cabinet minister at Canberra's Public Bar, which prompted a warning from Turnbull at the time. Tudge, meanwhile, was having an affair with female staffer Rachelle Miller, who told the ABC there was a significant power imbalance between the two, and that Tudge would pressure her to war-game answers to media if their relationship was uncovered.
