23.01.2022 November on Council seems particularly busy, both because we are catching up on issues that were deferred during the election caretaker period and because there is an early start on next month's meetings in order to complete them before Christmas. On Monday I attended the Financial Management, Audit, Risk and Compliance (FMARC) Committee meeting,of which I am a member. This is not a public meeting, but its recommendations go forward to the next Ordinary Meeting of Council (O...MC). Yesterday (after a great Melbourne Cup lunch with the Australia-Britain Society at the RAAFA Village in Bull Creek) there were three events: the group photograph for the new Council, a Special Meeting of Council to appoint the new Director of Technical Services, then the Agenda Briefing Forum in preparation for the OMC on 21 November. Over the next three weeks there is also a series of Elected Members Induction Program sessions, primarily aimed at the new Councillors, but also useful for continuing Elected Members. See more

22.01.2022 We love our cartoons at Glen Highland...hope you do, too! We all need a lift!

20.01.2022 While I was at Melville Cares. for its Annual General Meeting as a Board Member, I took this rather surreal photograph of Lisa O'Malley MLA with the "poster lady', the Melville Cares member who features in its publicity.

13.01.2022 "There will be things that happen in this life that will make you feel like you can't go on. But you must." said Bear. "How?" asked Rabbit. "You'll know." said ...Bear. "There is a resilience in each of us that remains hidden until we need it." "Like a kind of magic?" asked Rabbit. "Exactly." said Bear. "Like a kind of magic." 12.01.2022 I would like to wish you all the very best for the New Year, and during the coming year with its anticipated significant changes in Local Government I shall continue to represent you strongly on Melville Council. The Council is in recess during January with the first regular 2018 meeting being the Agenda Briefing Forum of 6 February in preparation for the first Ordinary Meeting of the Council for the year on 20 February 2018. However, before that Councillors have been called back to attend a Special Meeting of Electors on Wednesday 17 January.

11.01.2022 Sweet dreams all.

10.01.2022 We live & we learn. Never give up

01.01.2022 Last week I received a request for assistance from a resident in connection with a neighbour's intention to build a parapet wall on the boundary as part of a new development and there was concern about damage to the garden and reticulation along the fenceline. After being informed by the neighbour that the plans had been approved, the resident called the Council when the process was explained - this may be found in the document "Work Affecting Other Land" which should be co...nsulted as early as possible by those planning to build and by their neighbours. With lots reducing in size, and homes with parapet walls or walls close to the boundary (called "zero lot walls"), there is significant potential for ongoing disputes between neighbours causing both distress for all parties and requiring considerable effort from Council Officers attempting to resolve problems that should not have arisen. In summary, in the case brought to my attention (access over neighbouring property) the builder would seek permission for access by means of Form BA20A from the Building Commission. If the adjoining owner does not agree to access, the person responsible for the work would go to the Magistrate’s Court, which would eventually issue an order, with both parties then required to adhere to the provisions of the court order. Until consent is given or a court order is issued, the work cannot proceed. Fortunately, in the current case the neighbours spoke to each other again and resolved the problem without recourse to the Court. The golden rule is to work hard at maintaining good relations and good communication with your neighbours whenever possible.
