25.01.2022 Spring has definitely sprung and there are many more foals running around paddocks across South Australia. Have you inspected their jaws? How are their teeth? Is everything lining up? Perhaps one of the most neglected aspects of equine health, until a problem actually occurs, is the monitoring and care of a young horse’s teeth. ... Many people feel that a baby horse's teeth isn't worth the trouble, they are only temporary and are shed to make way for permanent teeth - but this way of thinking is not ideal! Baby teeth can have problems along the way that can heavily hinder a young horse’s development and even set them up for problems when their permanent teeth arrive. Most foals have their first set of incisors erupted by the time they are a week old. The next set is usually in by 6 weeks of age and the third by 6-9 months. Book in with me and let's make sure your foal's overall mouth health is up to scratch!

22.01.2022 It's amazing how much patience Matthew has whilst doing the horses teeth. I've always had my boy be sedated or twitched and couldn't believe that either wasn't needed. It's great to see someone show their passion through their work with patience and persistence. ... Will definitely be having him come back in the next 6 months and happily refer him. 21.01.2022 Horses may suffer from many dental problems. The most common include: + Sharp enamel points forming on the teeth that can cause lacerations on their cheeks and tongue.... + Baby/deciduous teeth that have not fallen out. Also known as Retained caps + Wolf teeth are still in the mouth which can cause discomfort when the bit is used. + Hooks forming on the upper and lower cheek teeth. + Long and/or sharp canine teeth interfering with the insertion or removal of the bit. + Lost and/or broken teeth. + Abnormal or uneven bite planes. + Excessively worn teeth. + Abnormally long teeth. + Infected teeth and/or gums. + Misalignment of teeth. + Gum disease. I have over 15 years dealing with the above issues. I can check the entirety of your horse's mouth health during our appointments. BOOK NOW! DM me or contact me on 0420755622.

20.01.2022 Is your horse tossing his head? Is he suddenly not allowing you to bridle him? Is he fighting with you more than normal? Is he reluctant to accept contact with the bit, or on the flip side, is he mouthing the bit excessively? Are you noting excessive salivation? ... Is he suddenly having a harder time working or moving in one direction? Are there other signs of discomfort in his day-to-day activities? Is he turning his head sideways when chewing? Is he dropping feed while eating? These are all common signs of a variety of dental problems that can be quickly and properly addressed by having your horse’s teeth examined. _ #mlequineperformance #equinedentist #horsedentist #southaustralia #equestrian #dentist #equinedentistry

19.01.2022 Can you pick what’s wrong with this horse’s teeth Perhaps a little tricky to the untrained eye, this horse has a change of angle to the incisors and bite-line. Imagine following this line up the horses face, it would fall somewhere above the eye. Ideally we would want to see the bite-line level with it’s jaw to allow for full flow and movement of forward back motion. There should be roughly 9mm of movement. Signs of this condition affecting your horse include showing incor...rect carriage when working them from behind, poking the nose out or slight reefing of the rein. These are all signs of tension in the poll and sensitivity in the jaw due to inflamed ligaments, a direct result from the bite line condition. Your horse’s mouth opening may be the relief it’s seeking to find more suppleness, so a drop or flash noseband could worsen their discomfort in this situation. Always get your horse’s teeth checked and get a second opinion if needed! It might save a world of pain with further evasion, soreness, tension and overgrowths. 6 monthly dental visits is the golden rule.

13.01.2022 Horse’s permanent teeth are around 4inches long, however, obviously you don’t see all of that when you look in their mouth. The remaining tooth that you can not see is hidden in the jaw and skull bones. Natural habitats for horses include exposure to a varied diet that includes grasses, wild grains, broad leaf plants, herbs, twigs, leaves and even bark; which is a little different from the normal stabled horse hay and grain diet, isn't it? Not only is their natural diet d...ifferent to one in a domestic situation, but they should have exposure throughout the day, not just when we feed them or when they’re put to pasture. Horses teeth can form sharp hooks, which can be painful, especially when a bit is placed in their mouth. Not only can they become sharp, the teeth can wear unevenly, which can lead to the mouth not closing properly. These issues, and more, can be solved by a proper dental program by a professional equine dentist, like me! Contact me to book in!

12.01.2022 There seems to be a common misconception that horses need to be heavily sedated and in a crush to have their teeth done. 08.01.2022 What's going on inside my four legged client's mouth.....? He has a slight overbite, which is not always a directly heritable condition. What it does mean, is that from a young age one growth plate in the jaw has grown faster or slower than the other. Like a domino effect, this relates further to the back of the mouth - the molars will not line up, therefore the lower last molars (# 11s) will not have part of the opposing tooth to wear against and result in hooks. Likewis...e on the top with the front molars (# 6s), causing a similar problem. This condition blocks the forward back movement of the jaw and you may find it translating to other behaviours, such as poking out their nose, reefing the reins, or even go past contact completely to evade the discomfort, ie mouth opening. Just another reason I strongly recommend 6 monthly dental visits!

06.01.2022 Had a great time the other day working alongside the vets. We removed 2 blind wolf teeth! Blinds means they have not erupted through the gum and never will. This is usually because they are angled forwards. ... I personally believe these are worse than "normal " wolf teeth as they usually sit further forwards, meaning they are even more in the way of the bit than normal. They are also unused out of the socket but with a layer of gum over them, causing more iratation and discomfort for the horse. These ones had to go! _ #mlperformancedentistry #mlperformance #equinedentist #wolfteeth #wolfteethextraction

02.01.2022 This image is of a 20 year old TB who had not had his teeth worked on in a very long time. The horse has a diagonal bite which is off set to the right.
