13.01.2022 Today's destination is the Pont Alexandre III bridge in Paris, France. I spent hours there admiring the detailing, design, lighting and more A bit about the Bridge: It is a deck arch bridge that spans the Seine in Paris. It connects the Champs-Élysées quarter with those of the Invalides and Eiffel Tower. The bridge is widely regarded as the most ornate, extravagant bridge in the city. It is classified as a French Monument historique.... Four gilt-bronze statues of Fames watch over the bridge, supported on massive 17 metres (56 ft) masonry socles, that provide stabilizing counterweight for the arch, without interfering with monumental views. The socles are crowned by Fames restraining Pegasus. The Nymph reliefs are at the centres of the arches over the Seine, memorials to the Franco-Russian Alliance. The Nymphs of the Seine has a relief of the arms of France, and faces the Nymphs of the Neva with the arms of Imperial Russia. They are both are executed in hammered copper over forms by Georges Récipon. The construction of the bridge is a marvel of 19th century engineering, consisting of a 6 metres (20 ft) high single span steel arch. The design, by the architects Joseph Cassien-Bernard (fr) and Gaston Cousin, was constrained by the need to keep the bridge from obscuring the view of the Champs-Élysées or the Invalides. The bridge was built by the engineers Jean Résal and Amédée d'Alby (fr). It was inaugurated in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle (universal exhibition) World's Fair, as were the nearby Grand Palais and Petit Palais.
12.01.2022 Imperial Vault of Heaven in Beijing, China circa 1985 The Imperial Vault of Heaven was a place to worship the tablet of God of Heaven and the tablets of the emperors' ancestors. It was built in 1530 during the reign of Emperor Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), and was given the name Taishendian. Later it was renamed Imperial Vault of Heaven (Huangqiongyu) in 1538. There is also a giant, vivid and exquisite stone relief of "two dragons are playing with a pearl" in t...he central part of the steps of the Xumi Base. The Xumi Base was a typical architectural foundation in ancient China. It evolved from the base of the Buddhist statue and was usually made of bricks and stones. In the Tang and Song dynasties, the Xumi Base reached its zenith. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the shape and decoration of the Xumi Base were not as rich as before, but the technique and handiwork came to a higher level. The hall of Imperial Vault of Heaven is supported by eight golden posts and eight eave posts. Right in the center of the hall is a round white marble stone base with delicate patterns. On the base is housed a shrine, in which the tablet of God of Heaven is worshipped. Because the hall is considered as the house of the God of Heaven on the earth, it was named Imperial Vault of Heaven instead of the traditional "palace" or "hall".
11.01.2022 Today's destination is an extraordinary cathedral in Valetta, Malta. Rather ordinary from the outside, the minute you walk inside, you are virtually blinded by the gold EVERYWHERE!! The interior of St John's Co-Cathedral is, indeed, one of the most beautiful churches in the world. It is a gem of Baroque art and architecture. It was built as the conventual church for the Knights of St John. The Grand Masters and several knights donated gifts of high artistic value and made eno...rmous contributions to enrich it with only the best works of art. It was built by the Order of St. John between 1572 and 1577, having been commissioned by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière as the Conventual Church of Saint John. The church was designed by the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar, who designed several of the more prominent buildings in Valletta. In the 17th century, its interior was redecorated in the Baroque style by Mattia Preti and other artists. The interior of the church is considered to be one of the finest examples of high Baroque architecture in Europe. See more
