25.01.2022 At the start of this year we held our student-led "$20,000 in 20 Minutes" fundraiser for the Mallacoota community, and invited Students and Staff to supply a cash donation during a 20 minute class time window. At the end of that 20 minutes, we had successfully raised more than $21,000 for those who endured Mallacoota's summer bushfires. Since then, we've received countless generous donations from the wider MLC community, bringing our fundraiser total to an impressive $39,050!... After discussions with the Mallacoota community, this money will be put towards local organisation The Sanctuary Mallacoota Youth Group to fund 3 separate initiatives that are designed to benefit the entire community: - A drive-in cinema - A documentary project following the people of Mallacoota as they recover from the bushfires - A wilderness coast conservation project Full details of the fundraiser can be found here: www.mlc.vic.edu.au//ne/A-Mallacoota-Bushfire-Appeal-Update We'd like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who kindly contributed to the fundraiser. Not only has Mallacoota endured the devastating bushfires, but also the effects of COVID-19 throughout this year. We hope these initiatives bring some relief to the recovery process and a little joy back to the community after a tough year.

23.01.2022 Our Green Team volunteers have seen their hard work come to fruition in the completion of the Mallacoota wildlife boxes. The Green Team first began work on these wildlife boxes back in Term 1, when the biggest news story of 2020 was the devastation caused by the summer bushfires affecting Mallacoota and much of regional Victoria and New South Wales. Now, back at school with access to our woodworking facilities, our volunteers have completed their 'wildlife boxes' which will... act like a surrogate refuge for small mammals in Mallacoota's bushlands in the absence of dense shrubbery. We look forward to seeing the boxes installed in East Gippsland and for the volunteer program to continue next year in 2021!

23.01.2022 We are excited to announce a return to MLC Swimming's Learn to Swim, including after school classes and holiday programs! Programs are open to both MLC and Non-MLC students, boys and girls aged 3 years and above. To register your interest email: [email protected]

23.01.2022 Year 11 student and 2021 Art and Design Prefect Connie Z. has spent the last few months compiling a 'Quaranzine'. It's a visual compilation of the creative projects the MLC Community got stuck into over the lockdown period; including photography, poetry, embroidery, watercolour, crochet, drawing, painting, and much, much more! Connie decided to create the 'zine as creativity had helped her to both cope and connect with family and friends through the Melbourne lockdowns.... "I hope that the Quaranzine will be able to shine a light on talents the MLC community has to offer, and hopefully inspire those who want to undertake their own creative projects," says Connie. "I also hope that it has provided an opportunity for individuals to connect during the pandemic, where people are more distant from one another than ever." The result is a wonderful insight into the hidden (and not-so-hidden!) talents of our classmates, teachers and friends. Scroll through the photos to see some snippets, but be sure download the Quaranzine through the Student Daily or MyMLC!

21.01.2022 If lockdown has turned you in to an at-home chef, then we have the perfect recipe book for you! Our Year 9 Melbourne Term students have spent their time developing the Melbourne Term Home Economics Recipe Book, chock full of more than 40 incredible recipes! Including Korean Bibimbap, Char Sui Pork Buns, Shish Tawook (Chicken skewers), Lebanese Cream Pastries, Hong Kong Style Egg Tarts and many more. Due to current restrictions, they've swapped their usual food fair for a COVI...D-friendly digital solution. Instead of munching on these delicious goods only once, you can now make the recipes over and over again from home. Best of all, a purchase of the cookbook contributes to CIKA (Cancer in Kids Auxiliary for cancer at the Murdoch Institute a the Royal Children's Hospital). Cookbooks are $5, but extra donations are welcome! Students and Staff can email Mrs Hudson to place their orders.

21.01.2022 While our COVID-safe campus policy is currently no visitors of the human variety, MLC Security was stumped as to what to do when 2 ducks wandered into the College campus this week. Ms Maserow captured these photos of our unusual little visitors after she herded them away from the busy Glenferrie Road and watched as they waddled their way through the front gardens. No-one is quite sure why they paid us a visit, but Security suspects that they came for a dip in our not-yet-ref...urbished front gardens fountain, as they swiftly flew away when they saw it was dry. Until next time little duckies!

20.01.2022 After a challenging year that's been full of surprises, our Year 12 students can now breathe a sigh of relief as all exams have concluded today for VCE while IB exams concluded last week. Due to a change in exam schedule, this year is the first time that the conclusion of exams coincides with the final week of Senior School at MLC. While we say our final farewells to the Class of 2020, we also look forward to farewelling our Year 11 on Friday and officially welcoming them ba...ck as the Class of 2021 in the new year. Congratulations Year 12 2020, you made it!

18.01.2022 On Friday night, our Boarders gathered for a festive Christmas and Holiday dinner as one of their last gatherings for the year. They enjoyed a delicious feast including traditional favourites like glazed ham and roasted veggies, and spent the afternoon putting together and decorating gingerbread houses. After a year where most Boarding activities had to be virtual, we're so grateful to see our Boarders back together and ending the year on a high note!

16.01.2022 After a successful fundraiser (The 'Ride for Mallacoota' bike-a-thon) earlier this year, Year 10 student Ashley has once again devised a charitable initiative. This time around, she's donated 100 potted succulents to her local aged care homes. Meeting many Seniors in her neighbourhood during her daily dog walks in lockdown, Ashley was looking for a (COVID-safe!) way to brighten their day and decided to gift 100 succulents from her garden. She called the project 'Succulents4S...eniors', and with a little help from sister Amber (Year 7) and parents Andrew and Jean, and a generous donation from Bunnings Warehouse Australia, Ashley saw the seed of her idea become a reality. Read the full story here:https://www.mlc.vic.edu.au/News-and-Ev//Succulents4Seniors Well done Ashley and family, we're inspired by your creativity and ingenuity when it comes to giving back to the community!

10.01.2022 After a reschedule back in July, we've arrived at NAIDOC Week! It's an awesome opportunity to acknowledge and educate ourselves on the Indigenous history of Australia. Alex, our 2020 Reconciliation Prefect has hand-picked some events of interest to the MLC Community which are free to join. The first of which begins tonight (Tuesday, 10 November)! From 5pm tonight, tune into 'NGV Teens: Cassie Leatham Industry Connections'. This is a free event for teens where Cassie Leatham, ...an Indigenous artist, will be talking about Aboriginal culture, both historically and contemporarily. Link: https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au//ngv-teens-industry-connection/ From 8pm tonight, ABC is broadcasting a NAIDOC Week Music Celebration. Link: https://www.abc.net.au//naidoc-musical-celebration/12797360 "The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be recognises and celebrates that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years, and I personally think one of the best ways to show commitment to this is to really educate yourself as much as possible and get involved in events such as the ones above," says Alex. To keep up with all the NAIDOC Week events, keep an eye out for Alex's messages in the Student and Staff Daily newsletters.

07.01.2022 Earlier this month, Junior School students had awesome day of house spirit and healthy competition at the Junior School Sports Day! While we were unable to welcome Parents onsite to cheer the students on, we did manage to capture some highlights from the day to share with you all. Keep watching for the big reveal of the winner of our Junior School Sports Day 2020!

07.01.2022 Once Melbourne's borders opened up, our Year 5 students jumped at the opportunity to participate in a 3 day outdoor and environmental education program at our regional campus on the Banksia Peninsula on the Gippsland Lakes. Students enthusiastically engaged in the experience, getting immersed in Banksia's unique coastal environment and everything that the program has to offer. The busy program included hiking, exploring aquatic life on the lake's edge, sharing stories aroun...d the campfire, observing the ways in which Banksia's unique flora and fauna adapt to their environment, and participating in environmental learning and reflective artworks. It was a wonderful way to end the school year, and we thank the Banksia and Junior School staff for making it all possible!

07.01.2022 We're so proud to see that our Year 11 and 12 IB students have whipped up a whopping 870 woollen squares this year during their 'Knit-A-square' CAS service learning component... Perhaps an abundance of home isolation time this year had something to do with it! These square will be shortly despatched to South Africa, where they'll be turned into blankets providing essential warmth and comfort to some very disadvantaged children and families.

04.01.2022 After months of waiting, wondering and wishing, some of our Term 3 and 4 Year 9 students were finally able to travel to Marshmead last week as restrictions lifted around Melbourne. Since then, they've wasted no time getting stuck into everything Marshmead has to offer; from taking art classes 'en plein air', to getting up close and personal with the farm animals, discovering new ecosystems while waist-deep in water, and learning about waste and sustainability with shovels in ...tow. We'd like to extend our thanks to the Staff at Marshmead who will continue working through the holiday period to make this trip possible. We'd also like to acknowledge the hard work from Middle School that went into making sure this trip was both achievable and COVID-safe under extraordinary circumstances. Lastly, we'd like to thank our families for waiting patiently with us through the changing restrictions, and to the students for jumping straight into the experience with joy and enthusiasm. We're so pleased to see this tour come to fruition, and can't wait to hear all about the experience when students return

04.01.2022 A fitting update from the MLC Archives as our Year 12 class begins to complete their final exams and looks towards the end of their high school journey, and as we get ready to farewell our students for the summer break. If you're an Old Collegian, you can follow the MLC Old Collegians' Club Facebook page for updates on all things for OCs; including reunion dates, news from OCs and the recent online webinars!

02.01.2022 This week, our Year 11 IB students presented their cross-disciplinary IB Group 4 Projects. This year's theme was (fittingly!) pandemics, and students showcased their creativity, research and public speaking skills to deliver some highly engaging presentations; whether that meant presenting live on the day or through preparing a video presentation for their peers to watch. Topics that were covered include The Bubonic Plague, HIV/AIDS, an invented pandemic called the "Oceania ...Respiratory Syndrome" and the effects that drinking or injecting bleach may have on tackling a virus (See "Science V Trump"!) just to name a few. The presentations were a highly informative look into pandemics past, present and imagined. Well done Year 11 IB students!

02.01.2022 There's nothing more joyous post-lockdown than hearing the sweet sounds of our brass and woodwind classes back in action! Thanks to the easing of restrictions, our singing, brass and woodwind classes and ensembles have been permitted to practice outdoors in small groups. Ms Maslen, our Woodwind, Guitar and Brass Co-ordinator says "it's been very exciting for us, as it is the first time since sometime in July that we have been able to have face-to-face teaching and learning!..." We're looking forward to seeing more of our students benefiting from these newly eased restrictions across sport, music and other areas in the near future.
