23.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday "We have them at last! What? Why, names for our Houses, of course!" In 1937, students had been waiting for 5 years to have their house groups named. Principal Rev Grove finally announced the names at an assembly in 1937 - the four houses were to be called Berry, Cato, Fitchett and Krome. Nevile house was introduced in 1959 along with Tiddeman house for the boarders. Tiddeman was later abolished in 1979 due to the smaller number of boarders compared with other houses. #mlcoo

23.01.2022 Being Methodist Ladies College, it hasn't always been commonplace to partake in Halloween festivities. But in 1982 the students were allowed to celebrate and attend school in fancy dress. The school provided a Halloween themed lunch with food styled in the shape of witches hats, bats, mice and cats...if only the MLC Archives had a photo of that! Happy Halloween to all Old Collegians, especially those in Victoria who are finally able to experience a bit of freedom post-lockdown.

23.01.2022 #Flashback Friday. Happy World Book Day! Our Archivist found this cute photo of Grade 4's Book Day back in 1991. If you see anyone you know tag them in the comments below. #mlcocc

21.01.2022 Flashback Friday In this series, published on the first Friday of every month, we will look back on the many interesting things held within the MLC Archives. To start off this series, we thought to post some of the earliest documents about MLC. The College's opening was big news, both in papers around Melbourne and Victoria but also across Australasia. Photo’s in this post come from The Australasian Sketcher (Dec 1881) and The Spectator (Nov 1883). Stacey, College Archivist.

20.01.2022 April Star of the Month is Rebecca O’Shannessy (nee Donaldson) Class of 2010. Upon graduating MLC Rebecca completed a Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery at La Trobe University. Whilst working as a midwife at the Mercy Hospital for Women, she then went on to complete a postgraduate diploma in Child, Family and Community Nursing, becoming a Maternal and Child Health nurse. After giving birth to her son, Jack, during Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdown this inspired Rebecca t...o write a children’s book about life with a baby during the COVID-19 pandemic - ‘When you were little: A tale of the year 2020’. This book is illustrated and self-published by Rebecca and was released in December. Rebecca feels very privileged to have gone to such a great school and had a good education and although she is proud of her academic accomplishments her biggest and greatest achievement to date has been navigating life as a new mother throughout such a crazy time in history. Rebecca's biggest motto in life is Use your head but follow your heart and that has certainly got her to where she is today. #mlcocc If you would like a copy of the Rebecca’s book you can find it here https://www.amazon.com.au/When-you-were-little//0645053309

06.01.2022 Flashback Friday! The College’s Archives hold numerous items, some of which provide light into what past pandemics and epidemics were like. The first health crisis to make a mark within the MLC Archives is that of the 1918-1919 Spanish Flu Pandemic. This pandemic emerged at the end of World War One when the College was only in its 36th year. Schools were not allowed to open until May of 1919, which required students and teachers to make up for lost time by working through th...e term holidays. Another health crisis that makes its mark was the Polio Epidemic, which impacted MLC the most during 1949. During this time the College decided to shift assemblies outdoors, in the hope that fresh air would prevent transmission amongst the students. People were urged to take responsibility for their own actions and be considerate of others. The students of the day fully embraced this spirit and the editorial from the end of year Silver and Green stated each of us must be sure that she is doing her best, for it is only by doing this that we can succeed, and if we are careless, we may be in the means of letting down those who are depending on us. As history shows, we have overcome many similar challenges like those we face today. Having a strong community and looking out for one another, goes a long way in overcoming the difficulties. 03.01.2022 Congratulations to the Old Scotch Football Club, who has won Inclusive Club of the Year at the Boroondara Sports Awards. As many of you know, in 2018 we joined ...forces with the long-established OSFC to form the Old Scotch Stars, its first women’s team in its 97 year history. Most of its inaugural team are Old Collegians (and even a few current Senior School students!) plus MLC’s Ryan Duke as coach, and the team has seen tremendous success already, reaching the grand final in both years and being 2019 premiers. This year also saw the second women’s team established at the club. The award was announced by Nicole Livingstone, current Head of Women’s Football at the AFL, with the award acknowledging not only the inclusion of the Stars but also women becoming team managers, physiotherapists, trainers, coaches and committee members. Fantastic recognition for all involved, and go Stars in season 2021!

03.01.2022 "There is no doubt that the Old Collegians' Club has meant very much to its members, first of all because of the friendships that have been continued." -Dr Harold Wood, 1966. For this weeks' Flashback Friday, we've done a deep dive into Dr Harold Wood (Principal of MLC from 1939-1966). During this lockdown, the Archivist has been keeping busy digitising some of the hundreds of cassette tapes in the Archival Collections. In this video, you can listen to some excerpts from Dr Wood's speech, made to the Old Collegians in a special Farewell Assembly organised by the OCC for Dr Wood and his wife Olive Wood upon their retirement in 1966.
