25.01.2022 Indigenous peoples must have the opportunity to care for their land and waters holistically, and share more equitably in the benefits of water use The current system doesn't stack up. Meaningful national water reform must address the devastating impacts of so-called 'management' decisions, the marketisation of water, and the separation of water from land. Our rivers and our communities depend on it. https://www.greenleft.org.au//murray-darling-basin-plan-mu

24.01.2022 This is important every day. But especially in these challenging and uncertain times #RUOK #StrongerTogether #itsoktoaskforhelp
24.01.2022 Inspiring wetland restoration work by Barapa Barapa mob and local ecologist! Country needs people!
22.01.2022 Deadly work from MLDRIN Director Brendan Kennedy!! Reclaiming language and lore!
19.01.2022 Worrying to see blue green algae affecting waterways this early in the season.
18.01.2022 Remove destructive dams and let our rivers run free!! This just shows what is possible. In the Klamath Basin, dams that restrict fish movement and river flows are being DISMANTLED! Sadly in the Murray Farling Basin, governments are planning new and bigger dams. Lets not forget our vision of free flowing rivers connected from the mountains to the sea.
17.01.2022 Great to see environmental flows heading down the Baaka after long dry spells in recent years! A big boost to community wellbeing. We support better flows for the length of the Baaka. When our Baaka is healthy, we are healthy. Flows don’t only help fish - they help people too. Our communities need positivity, especially with corona virus impacting. A boost to the river will boost our well-being, Barkindji elder Badger Bates said. https://www.environment.gov.au//lower-darling-baaka-flows-
16.01.2022 Water allocated to keep rivers healthy is known as #WaterForTheEnvironment. With natural runoff from rainfall now captured in dams, rivers need to be actively ...managed to keep them healthy. Water for the environment is delivered when and where plants and animals need it most. It is used to help rivers flow, keep native plants healthy, and support feeding and breeding of native animals, birds, fish and frogs. https://bit.ly/2SPULrN Narran River, Neal Foster
16.01.2022 EXPOSED: Victorian Government secretive decision to hand 2 billion litres of 'additional' water over to irrigators without any consultation with First Nations (or anyone it seems). MLDRIN has written to acting Minister Richard Wynne MP calling for an urgent review of this decision. This 2GL could have been a game changing starting point for First Nations water ownership in Northern Victoria
16.01.2022 Nationals are rorting taxpayers to bankroll their farm upgrades. Will the $40m promised to First Nations be next?
16.01.2022 This is a hugely important vote. Let's hope NSW parliament takes a stand for what is right and disallows this perverse floodplain harvesting regulation
15.01.2022 NSW community and parliament had stood up to the bullying National party!! Well worth a listen. Last night's disallowance of floodplain harvesting regulations is an historic show if support for our rivers and a chance to reset water management in the Northern Basin.
13.01.2022 Why has it taken more than two years to appoint a First Nations member to the Board of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority? Water governance which doesn't include First Nations voices isn't legitimate. Our Deputy Chair Grant Rigney highlights the 'unacceptable' delays to this important appointment.
13.01.2022 Minister Pitt calls for state and territory governments to "pull out all stops to deliver on their commitments" to recover water for the environment under the Basin Plan. But he also won't buy water back from willing sellers to restore our rivers. It beggars belief. https://www.newcastlestar.com.au//basin-plan-deadline-re/
11.01.2022 Inspiring stuff Nari Nari Tribal Council!
11.01.2022 Check this out, one of the jewels of the Lachlan River... the Great Cumbung reed beds after a flood. Sadly now threatened if the Wyangala Wall is raised and cap...tures much of this flood water- we wont see the place buzzing quite like this again. This is an environmental asset to our state and country... lets keep it that way. Thanks for sharing this incredible flick Leigh Healey
11.01.2022 An inspiring story! How a landmark case helped solidify the legal recognition of First Nations land and water ownership in South Eastern Australia.
10.01.2022 Awesome! Taungurung Land & Waters Council
09.01.2022 Lidia Thorpe! Thanks for standing up for water and our rivers in Senate Estimates today
08.01.2022 Stay safe and get tested everyone
08.01.2022 Have you say about proposals for new dam projects in NSW Dams don't make more water and they don't keep our rivers healthy. The NSW Upper House is running an enquiry into new dam projects. These include major proposals on the Lachlan and Macquarie rivers. Submissions are due next Tuesday 22nd September. River Country Campaign have produced this awesome submission guide, so consider taking 15 minutes to make a short submission and make sure your voice is heard!
08.01.2022 While on patrol, Tatura Fisheries Officers came across keen Carlton fan and local Yorta Yorta member, Dixon ‘Dixie’ Patton, preparing for an indigenous smoking ...ceremony on the Goulburn River at Mooroopna. Smoking ceremonies are an ancient custom in many indigenous cultures, involving the smouldering of native plants with permission from local elders. Such ceremonies can be used for a variety of reasons, however most are used to ward off bad spirits or for cleansing the mind. Dixie was preparing to undertake the ceremony with his grandson and other Yorta Yorta community members, when the Officers came across them. Our Officers were humbled when Dixie invited them to observe the ceremony, starting with the precise and respectful manner in which Dixie created the scar tree and the bark plate where the gum leaves would be smouldered. Dixie is passionate about imparting his knowledge down through the generations to ensure this tradition is not lost with the Yorta Yorta people. Here’s hoping the Blues can bring the heat next year, Dixie! #fisheriesofficersatwork #yortayortacountry #yortayortaproud #yortayorta Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation
08.01.2022 Solidarity with sacred rivers and their guardians everywhere!
07.01.2022 Some amazing photos here! The pics of Wilcannia old wharf and paddle steamers tell a pretty depressing tale though...
06.01.2022 This is really important. Free, prior and informed consent of First Nations is essential before any decisions should be made on this sacred river. We stand in solidarity with Martuwarra/Fitzroy River mobs We need actual resources to be directed through the Kimberley Land Council and the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council so that we can go out with the Native Title groups and hold these public meetings, so Aboriginal people who are the majority of people living within the Fitzroy catchment have an opportunity to really understand the intentions of the government in regards to water allocations. https://nit.com.au/martuwarra-fitzroy-river-advocates-cla/
06.01.2022 WaterNSW are running community engagement sessions on the proposed Wyangala Dam wall raising. Jump on the link to join a session and let them know what you think! https://swipengage.com/#/WyangalaDam
04.01.2022 Country needs proper flows to be healthy!! Sixteen First Nations across the Southern Basin sent this message loud and clear in a major Environmental Water Guidance project this year. Environmental water holders have heard the message that keeping our rivers connected is a key to sustaining the cultural health of waterways. A coordinated 2020 Southern Spring Flow is kicking off throughout September-November and will help to support Murray Cod breeding and feeding. Coordi...nated flows down the Murray, right through to the Coorong, will help water red gums, nourish lignum and support other culturally important species. Water will flow through to the iconic Barmah-Millewa forest and help move vital nutrients through the system. We need flows that connect rivers from the source to the mouth, and nourish our wetlands, creeks and billabongs. The Southern Spring Flow is a step towards stronger recognition of First Nations values and objectives in water planning. 04.01.2022 New dam projects in NSW are part of ongoing cultural genocide. Gladys Berejiklian, don't ignore our concerns. First Nations have not given consent to the destruction of heritage sites and our living culture. "I am sure the wider community generally does not believe that the destruction of Aboriginal cultural heritage on such a significant level is in keeping with the expectations and values we hold as a society."
04.01.2022 Let our rivers flow!
03.01.2022 Applications close this week!
03.01.2022 Mining impacts on water in (and under) Country. Mound springs are sacred places and their water connection is critical
03.01.2022 This Saturday the 29th May. Galari Bila Waga Dhaanys will be hosting a Corroboree. 6pm start, all welcome to attend.
02.01.2022 There's a risk of blackwater events as spring rains flush organic matter out of dry creeks and billabongs. Keep a look out and let people know if you spot anything!
