25.01.2022 Lake or sea? This beach is located on Lake Bärwalder in the Lusatian region of Germany. Formerly the Bärwalde open cut brown coal mine, this is now Saxony’s largest inland lake and attracts tourists for both land and water-based activities. Its motto is ‘sporty, natural and artistic’. #NationalWaterWeek

22.01.2022 Implementation of the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy is under way. The vision of the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy (LVRRS) is to transform the Latrobe Valley coal mines and surrounding land, into a safe, stable and sustainable landscape for future generations. The Victorian Government, in collaboration with mine operators and stakeholders, is undertaking further studies to support mine rehabilitation planning. These studies include exploring alternative water sources that might be able to support mine rehabilitation as well as options that don’t rely on water. 20.01.2022 Heard about the Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain Pilot Project (HESC)? The HESC Pilot Project seeks to demonstrate a fully integrated supply chain for hydrogen produced from the Latrobe Valley’s brown coal and shipped to Japan. With operation of the pilot plant commencing shortly, two online community information sessions are being held on the 25th November. You can learn more about the project, or sign up for a session at https://hydrogenenergysupplychain.com/lvwebinar/

20.01.2022 Whole-of-mine-life planning involves developing a holistic design for the mine’s entire life cycle: from feasibility to the post-rehabilitation phases. This article recently published by AusIMM, states that best practice planning should involve traditional owner groups throughout the planning phases. This enables co-design of post-mining land use and rehabilitation processes, including developing opportunities for traditional owner groups to undertake land management processes. #communityengagement

19.01.2022 Demolition of Boiler House 4 at the Hazelwood Rehabilitation Project is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday 20 November at 12 noon (although subject to any changes in weather conditions). There is a 700 metre exclusion zone around the Boiler House to ensure safety of the workforce and public. This means there will be road closures on Brodribb Road and Yinnar Road on the day of the blast event. Under an approved traffic management plan, traffic on the Princes Freeway will be slowed... to 60 kilometres an hour. Traffic on the Strzelecki Highway will be slowed to 80 kilometres per hour. This will occur three hours prior to blast time and for one hour post a successful blast. The demolition is expected to take around 10 seconds. 18.01.2022 The Latrobe River is the longest waterway in the Latrobe catchment, covering a course of 270 kilometres. From supplying drinking water, to keeping our parks and gardens green, not only is it critical to supporting industry, agriculture and environmental values across the system and downstream to the Gippsland Lakes, it's also been at the centre of investigations for a water-based rehabilitation option for the three Latrobe Valley brown coal mines as part of the Latrobe Valle...y Regional Rehabilitation Strategy’s Regional Water Study. Check out this interactive map of the Latrobe River to find out more where water comes from and how it is used across the Latrobe region: https://www.water.vic.gov.au/planning/LVRRS/water Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

10.01.2022 Coalified trees and other fossils are visible in brown coal deposits worldwide, including in the Latrobe Valley. Three fossils recently found in a lignite mine in southeastern Yunan Province, China, have been dated at about 6.4 million years old and are thought to be some of the oldest monkey fossils found to date outside of Africa. #lignite

04.01.2022 AGL announced plans to develop a large battery storage system at the Loy Yang power station. The battery system is another step in the modernisation of Victoria’s energy supply and improves the reliability of the National Energy Market (NEM). This system will be one of the largest in Victoria at 200 MW, allowing for up to 4 hours of storage in the longer term. The investment is part of AGL’s ongoing commitment to firming technology and is in direct alignment with the Federal Government’s National Technology Investment Roadmap and consistent with AEMO’s 2020 Integrated System Plan released in July.
