Come and see Year 12 student Georgies artwork, Social Beings, Watercolour on paper at META Georgies comments about her artwork : My artwork consists of a series of watercolour portraits. The individual portraits were to depict people who are close to me in environments that reflect their personalities. Some portraits featured more than one person as to show the influence of friendships and relationships on personality. The medium of watercolour appealed most to me as it allowed me to build layers of paint that created depth that otherwise wouldnt be achievable. Come to the META GALLERY NORTH METRO TAFE 3 - 22 August Opening times: M-F 10.00-16.30, SAT TBC 12 Aberdeen St, Northbridge

17.01.2022 Act Belong Commit Mindful May House Colouring Competition Mindful May is a way to share the Act Belong Commit message of keeping active mentally, physically, socially, spiritually, and culturally. Mindful May encourages students and school staff to learn new skills to slow down and practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the idea of learning how to be fully present and engaged in the moment with openness, curiosity and without judgement. Act Belong Commit launched the 2021 Mindf...ul May competition for all their Mentally Healthy Schools. Central to the competition was the 2021 theme: Act with Mindfulness for good mental health. To participate we designed the Mindful May House Colouring Competition. There were 3 parts to the competition - A4 colouring mandalas to submit, a colouring book for each House to complete in the library and a mindful poster design to be submitted by each House around the theme - Act with mindfulness for good mental health. We were overwhelmed with the response receiving a total of 240 coloured mandalas, four completed colour in books and House mindfulness posters which will now be used to brighten up areas around the school. House points have been awarded and the winning submissions will be entered in to the Act Belong Commit state-wide competition. The winning House overall was O’Connor with 1271 points followed by Murdoch 769 points, Forrest 712 points and Hackett 292 points. Congratulations to everyone that participated in Mindful May!

15.01.2022 MOUNT LAWLEY SHS STUDENT SUCCESS IN NATIONAL CHINESE LANGUAGE COMPETITION. Source: Confucius Institute UWA. Congratulations to all the talented students from across Australia who took part in the Chinese Bridge competition we hosted on the weekend. Your enthusiasm showed how learning a language helps cross boundaries - even ones made necessary by COVID-19 travel restrictions! On 8 August, 12 high school students from the ACT, NT, SA and WA took to Zoom to show off their Chin...ese speaking skills. If that wasnt challenging enough, they also completed a written general knowledge test in Chinese and submitted videos demonstrating their talents at Chinese singing, dancing, cooking, tea art and calligraphy. The students were competing in the regional final of this years Chinese Bridge (Hanyu Qiao) Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary Students, which took place online for the first time.. Suu Kyi along with 5 students from other states entered finals and now they go the to the next round of the competition.. "The greatest power of language is that it allows us to unite with each other to meet the challenges of facing unpredictable difficulties so that we can combine our efforts to build a better future world," CI Associate Director Fu Zheng said. The Australian final of the competition will be hosted by the Confucius Institute at Charles Darwin University this weekend, with the global finals scheduled for later this year. 10.01.2022 The beginning of August marks the start of one of the six Nyoongar seasons, Djilba. As the days start to warm, we start to see and hear the first of the newborn... animals with their proud parents out and about providing them with food, guiding them through foraging tasks and protecting them. Woodland birds are still nest bound, hence the swooping protective behaviour of the koolbardi (magpie), djidi djidi (willy wag tails) and chuck-a-luck (wattle birds). As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to rise, the flower stalks of the balgas (Grass Trees) emerge in preparation for the coming Kambarang season. See more

06.01.2022 Our school Instagram is having a few issues at the moment. An account which appears to be from the school has been set up by someone. Over recent weeks and months we have asked them to take down their account, but they have not. They have been taking photos from our school facebook page and pretending to represent the school, and over the weekend have actually accused the school account of being fraudulent. It also appears that a number of people from our school community hav...e inadvertently liked their account. So, to be clear, the actual school account is: @mountlawleyseniorhighschool The fake account that is not run by us is: @mountlawleyshs We would appreciate if members of our school community could disconnect from this instagram impersonation account so as not to give them any more credibility. We will continue our work with Instagram to take down this account and have contacted the Education Department who will be taking further action on our behalf. This message will appear on our Facebook, Instagram and web pages. Thanks for your help. See more

05.01.2022 During Term 2, Ms Fitters Year 8 Integrated Studies students put on their creative writing hats and entered the Katharine Susannah Prichard KSP Spooky Story Competition in the youth category (8-18 years). This competition was sponsored by Little Black Dress Productions, KSP Foundation Inc and Wild Weeds Press. Rosies entry Beneath the Dying Sun, was shortlisted and will be published in the print anthology, Beneath, by Wild Weeds Press. -... BENEATH THE DYING SUN I am the one that is always watching. The one who is always slinking behind you, the darkness beneath your feet. Sometimes I move, sometimes you dont even notice me. I am long, or fat, or even larger than you. You didnt think I had a mind of my own - well, you were wrong. You thought I was just something that appeared underneath the dying sun, the slinking black on the pavement. I watch everyone. My eyes are black, pitch black. When the night falls, my body fills the whole room, smothering you, making you gasp for breath, slowly choking in the darkness of my body. I am the doubt in your mind, the hate of your peers, the anger in that bruised body of yours. I slowly infect your mind, making you hate, and hurt, and horrify, and you just want to let go, to get rid of this pain. You should be scared, you should be sorry, you should notice me. But you dont. You step on me and tread me into the dirt. And most of all, you let the sun get to me, to burn me. You dont know how it hurts. It slowly makes me disappear, and become smaller, and smaller. But I will always come back to haunt you. You can never get rid of me. I am the dark in the corners, the black under the bed, the feeling of fear in the night that makes your heart race. That is my favourite part of the day, the night-time. The time you notice me, when all the lights go out, and the dark surrounds you, that is the time you notice me. I smother you. And that light that you turn on, well, it is nothing to me at night. I will never truly disappear, not ever. I am always watching, watching you, seeing your every move. You are never alone. I am the shadow in this world, beneath the dying sun.

01.01.2022 MOUNT LAWLEY STUDENT WINS GOLD AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF THE PERFORMING ARTS Our Year 9 Music student Louis has just won GOLD for the Junior category for the World Championships of the Performing arts in Music Instrumental. Over 60 countries from around the world and some 3000 competitors in various categories such as actors, models, singers, musicians compete at this world competition. Due to COVID, all entries were via video and its fantastic to see an Australian student be...ing able to participate in such a vast competition. Louis entered the vocal/self-accompanied guitar/harmonica and an instrumental piece, he advanced to the semi-finals and then onto the grand finals and where he won gold medals for both performances. The only musician out of the Junior and Senior sections in Australia. Our school is so proud of Louiss achievement, and we wish him success in his future musical ventures.
