24.01.2022 New South Wales, Australia - Armidale student Jacqueline McCarthy is tapping into a whole new perspective on medicinal cannabis with an innovative new study. The former nurse and pain management specialist is now in her fourth year of pharmacy at the University of New England and decided to take on ground-breaking research study as part of her honours thesis in a bid to make up her own mind about the controversial new treatment. Ms McCarthys research comes after the Federal ...Government amended the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967 in February this year. The amending legislation, the Narcotic Drugs Amendment Act 2016, makes provisions for the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal and related scientific purposes. Ms McCarthy said she was always interested in how medicinal cannabis might provide patients with a better quality of life. I worked on a HIV ward in Sydney at St Vincents [20-years-ago] and back then HIV didnt have the life expectancy it does now. Back then it was six months to a year [life expectancy] and these patients were growing tumours, they were in pain all the time, they didnt want to eat, they were on chemo and they just waste away in front of you. I saw it [cannabis] used, not in a legal sense, but family and friends would bring some cannabis in for them and they would just want to eat and interact and it gave them a better quality of life". "That always stayed in my mind. Ms McCarthy said she has also seen what opioids and strong painkillers could do to a persons quality of life. Seeing what the opioids do to people I think its not appropriate for everyone she said. Now, changing careers Im looking at it from a pharmacy point of view. I want to find out what pharmacists think, how it should be scheduled, monitored, what patients are appropriate, how do we dose them. Ive always had an open mind about it but I think it needs to be done properly, thats what Im investigating. Ms McCarthy said pharmacists were not sufficiently involved prior to the new legislation and hoped her research would help to give them a voice on the issue. See more

23.01.2022 Of course when they say "Legalises cultivation" we know that at this stage, it means a highly regulated and restricted form of production. We still have a lot of work to do before cannabis is truly free for one and all.

17.01.2022 Australia is a newcomer to the field, having federally legalized marijuana for medical and scientific purposes earlier this year, but the country has quickly become an area of interest. So far, roughly 10 public companies have emerged in the sector, including MMJ PhytoTech and MGC Pharmaceuticals, says Harrison Phillips, an analyst at Viridian. And most have partnered with Canadian firms to spur growth.

15.01.2022 New Zealand - A great grandmother who relies on medicinal cannabis to ease her pain from rheumatoid arthritis, is grateful to the green fairies who drop her supply in the letterbox at no cost. Pearl Schomburg has cannabis, cannabinoid oil and balm dropped outside her home regularly which she says she couldnt afford on her benefit. The 63-year-old relies on the deeds of green fairies for pain relief and since using cannabinoid products for three months has not taken any o...f her 12 prescribed pharmaceutical medicines, half of which she was taking to relieve side effects caused by the medications. She says there is very rarely money exchanged between fairies and those using cannabis as a means of medicine. She believes suppliers do it to help sufferers. Ms Schomburg is advocating for police to stop arresting users and their suppliers. But, she worries for those suffering from terminal illnesses or chronic pain that dont have access to these contacts. She is campaigning for a moratorium on arresting medicinal cannabis users, growers, suppliers and transporters. When contacted, a police spokesperson said they will not be offering comment on the moratorium being advocated for. The role of police is to enforce the law and the police approach to cannabis has not changed. Police officers have discretion on how they deal with a range of matters on a case by case basis. Ms Schomburg says it is her duty to look after fairies supplying her with illegal products. If people like me dont keep these people safe, I cant use this medicine she says. Ms Schomburg recently protested in the Stop the Arrests nationwide demonstrations, led by Rose Renton, advocating for New Zealand police to end cannabis-related arrests. Ms Renton recently helped deliver a petition with over 17,000 signatures to Parliament, calling for medicinal cannabis products to be made available. See more

13.01.2022 Do you think medicinal cannabis should be legalised?

12.01.2022 South Australia - (Opinion) - After many years of advocacy and education it is disappointing South Australia still lags behind the rest of the country in regard to Industrial Hemp legislation. There is an impasse that needs breaking through, old arguments no longer hold any weight. Yes, trials some 20 years ago failed, however, as pointed out to various ministers and government departments, five varieties of French hemp were used. Hemp is day length, not climate sensitive and... French hemp wont yield sufficient bio-mass in South Australia. It will grow for about 6-8 weeks and then go to flower and stop growing. In the past 20 years since these trials much has been done in Australia to breed cultivars suited to our conditions. Companies such as Ecofibre Industries Queensland and dedicated growers in other states have successfully created cultivars to support the growing industry. We should not dismiss potential for farmers and producers in South Australia due to past limiting outcomes. Surely continued focus on viability and profitability loses sight of any innovative potential. Like all great opportunities the freedom for creative inspiration creates markets. Hemp is currently a billion-dollar global market increasing year by year. Governments role should be to set a legislative framework that industry can build upon. If individuals, businesses and organisations are willing to undertake trials and work towards building a sustainable industry then we should be embracing this energy and supporting them Enable those who wish to take the risk the freedom to grow, to build, to create. There are many immediate and potential opportunities for SA in areas including: Hempcrete (housing and construction) Industrial products - including composites with other materials Hemp seed/oil products - body care, food, fuel Animal feed and bedding Economic markets now depend on sustainable industry. It is vital that innovation and investments in agriculture and industry explore the wide range of products made from industrial hemp. Biodiversity is essential to sustain human well-being and the well-being of the planet. Hemp goes a long way in contributing to the health of our environment through carbon sequestration, soil repair (prevention of soil erosion), weed suppression and organic fertilisation or nitrogen fixing. We live on a finite planet and the old way of business as usual cant sustain future generations. We need clean, green alternatives, we need conscious leadership and the legislative framework to allow the changes so many of us have been yearning for. The time is now - lets not lock out the potential. See more

10.01.2022 Cannabis may be cancers new arch enemy. Compounds called cannabinoids directly engage with cells in the immune system and on tumours themselves. Once these cannabinoids (chemicals like THC and CBD) connect with a cell, they trigger a cascade of effects that give the cells different directions. THC and CBD engage cells via special sites called cannabinoid receptors. There are two primary cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. Oregon Optimal Health provider Dr K J Welker explains... how cannabis uses these cell receptors to kill cancer, "The tumours, as they develop, have a lot more CB1 and primarily CB2 receptors. As the CB2 receptor activity goes up, the number of CB2 receptors goes up. That activates to produce ceramides (compounds that protect the structure of a cell), so the CB2 receptor also enhances the immune system. You get more natural killer cells, whats called a cytotoxic effect. Meaning killing the cancer cell", Dr Welker. . A cancerous cell is a cell that has mutated and no longer responds to the normal immune signals that determine whether the cell lives or dies. Compounds in cannabis both help restore balance immune function in cancer, boosting the immune systems ability to clean out these rogue and damaged cells. Even more miraculous, as Dr Welker explains, "Cannabinoids will kill cancer cells, but it will not cause harm to a normal cell division". Patients like Brad Nichols have experienced the healing benefits of cannabis first-hand. Nichols was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Cannabis effectively helped him wean off prescription medications and manage the pain associated with conventional treatments. "The doctor told me that if I survived the surgery, I might live 3 to 6 years I was bedridden for 5 years after the surgery. But, thanks to medical marijuana*, the RS oil specifically, the pain subsided and I am able to get out of the house and take care of business. *Cannabis sativa L., is the correct botanical term, marijuana is a North American colloquialism See more

09.01.2022 For those in the epilepsy world that missed this news. More good news this time for adult epilepsy patients in Melbourne. I think in the next few years there will be a lot more in this space for epileptics. I can hear the researchers who have for years been frustrated by our laws getting excited about being able to finally do what they want to do research wise. The epileptic world has been waiting a long time acting illegally because they have had to. To see this issue out of... the shadows is fantastic. Long long way to go but with time I strongly believe there will be a whole range of cannabis based products available. The hope is that the products will be affordable and accessible to patients and not just controlled by big pharamceutical companies but that an Australian industry establishes in this country focussed on providing good quality, tested and affordable and accessible products to p[atients that need them. The gel trial is from my understanding a trial for adults not paediatrics. Mind you Lach if he doesnt get on the Qld trial could potentially transition to adult care. We will be watching this one carefully. I havent even looked at this one as an option for him as we are focussed on Cilento trials atm. Is there anyone following Lachs page who is on this gel trial who can enlighten us a bit more!! See more

09.01.2022 The dominant stance of the medical research community and pharmaceutical industry has been whole plant extracts are crude and less effective than isolated and purified cannabinoids. A growing body of research is proving just the opposite. 1. Proven Effectiveness of Whole Plant CBD over Synthetic CBD 2015 study showed whole plant CBD-rich cannabis superior over synthetic CBD for treatment of inflammatory conditions. A review into anti-inflammatory effects of CBD revealed a...dministration of pure CBD in pre-clinical studies resulted in a bell-shaped dose-response curve, meaning CBD stopped having a therapeutic effect beyond a certain amount. Researchers wondered whether a whole plant CBD-rich extract would respond any differently. They discovered that unlike the bell-shaped dose-response curve of pure CBD, the anti-inflammatory, anti-pain response of whole plant CBD increased with dose, making whole plant CBD ideal for clinical use. 2. Entourage Effect - To explain why whole plant CBD was more effective than pure CBD, Israeli scientists surmise, It is likely other components in the extract synergise with CBD to achieve the desired anti-inflammatory action that may contribute to overcoming the bell-shaped dose-response of purified CBD. By other components they refer to the approximately 420 additional compounds, other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, fatty acids, sugars .... 3. Synergy of THC and CBD - Research has shown CBD to greatly enhance medical benefits of THC while reducing unwanted effects. CBD and THC act on different pathways in the body, complementing and synergising mutual analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour and other medically beneficial effects. 4-7. Four Mechanisms of Whole Plant Extract Synergy - 2009 review of synergy research in plant medicine found a rationale for the pharmacological and therapeutic superiority of many herbal drug combinations in traditional medicine in comparison to isolated single constituents. They define four basic mechanisms of whole plant extract synergy that can be applied to cannabis: Ability to affect multiple targets within the body Ability to improve the absorption of active ingredients Ability to overcome bacterial defence mechanisms Ability to minimise adverse side effects See more

07.01.2022 Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia - Coast father Steve Peek is at his wits end. For months, hes been treating his terminally ill eight-year-old daughter Suli with cannabis oil to reduce the 100-plus severe seizures she was having every day. To treat Sulis undetermined regressive neurological disorder, health professionals have prescribed a variety of pharmaceutical medications. However, among a host of other debilitating side effects, the medication was giving her blee...ding stomach ulcers. The cannabis oil reduces Sulis seizures to only a few per day but cannot be used in hospitals, which means going into hospital for Suli is almost a death sentence. Mr Peek is now asking for amnesty to administer the oil to improve her quality of life. "She is dying, but theres no time frame or anything because theres no way of telling whether it will be one day or a few years" he said. "When a child is in palliative care, there arent any choices left. Our daughter has been using medicinal cannabis for 18 months with no side effects. Who are we hurting?" Together with Buderim MP Steve Dickson, the two men put together a petition that has been signed by more than 1,800 people in a few weeks. Mr Dickson said it was "ridiculous" that the government had not already granted Mr Peek amnesty. "This little girl cant defend herself and her dad is doing everything he can for her" he said. 07.01.2022 Australia - A Belated Green Revolution for Cannabis: Virtual Genetic Resources to Fast-Track Cultivar Development, Southern Cross Plant Science, Southern Cross University, Ecofibre Industries Operations Pty Ltd, Australia. The Green Revolution saw the productivity of major crops such as wheat (Triticum spp.), rice (Oryza sativa), maize (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and millet (Pennisetum glaucum) increase by 0.51% annually 1960-2000. A large proportion of these gain...s has been attributed to germplasm improvements initiated by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, which facilitated genetic resource exchange, adaptive transfers and the free flow of materials and knowledge between research groups. However, the genetic improvement of crop-types was not evenly distributed. During the latter part of the twentieth century legitimate crop-types of Cannabis, commonly referred to as industrial hemp, not only failed to benefit from advances in breeding technologies and genetic resource utilisation, but also suffered significant losses in ex situ conservation, with likely significant genetic erosion, as has been documented with the loss of rice wild relatives in China ... In recent years there has been growing public acceptance that medical cannabis has therapeutic applications, which has been particularly prominent in a number of states of the USA, along with Australia, Canada, Israel and Uruguay. This growing public tolerance toward Cannabis in North and South America and in other parts of the world has led to a number of political and legal reforms in these legislatures and suggests not only a renewed consumer demand for Cannabis-related products, but also an increased requirement for breeders to develop varieties for specific end-use applications ... 05.01.2022 Ballarat, Victoria, Australia - Young, cash strapped Melbourne students are being recruited to drive Ballarats $8 million commercial cannabis supply market by out of town criminals who use the proceeds to fund both international and domestic crime. Local police have busted 13 grow houses and more than 2,400 cannabis plants in the last eight months. The grow houses spread between Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Learmonth, Bannockburn and Rokewood are set up in both rented and ow...ned properties and tended to by young, often international, students who are paid cash-in-hand to procure the crops. The wage is low and the risk is high, but there are many people willing to take the risk, police say. Ballarats divisional response unit Detective Senior Sergeant Darren Tanis said police were making new strategic efforts to monitor and shut down the growing industry. Ballarats divisional response unit Detective Senior Sergeant Darren Tanis said a combination of Australian citizens, residents and international visitors were travelling from Melbournes western suburbs in the dead of the night to tend to the crops. Many of the house sitters have (previously) had minimal involvement or history with police. They are solely doing it for the cash wages Detective Senior Sergeant Tanis said. The Couriers analysis of court documents show an overwhelming number of Vietnam nationals have been prosecuted over a series of grow houses discovered in the Ballarat region over the past six months. Police would not comment specifically on the nationally of offenders, but said people of a wide variety of nationalities were being arrested. There is significant criminal enterprise involved Detective Senior Sergeant Tanis said. Significant criminals higher up the chain have been arrested, charged and convicted. There are people within the finance industry and the real estate industry. Cheaper rents in Ballarat and surrounding suburbs were tempting to growers whose primary purpose of establishing the grow houses was to generate quick profit to fund both international and local crime, he said. Grow houses are a metropolitan and regional issue. Its an issue that is spilling from metropolitan Melbourne Detective Senior Sergeant Tanis said. Theres cheaper rent, cheaper housing and a belief that it is easier to blend in with the locals. These people rent and purchase the properties solely for cannabis cultivation. Houses, both rented and purchased, are quickly and randomly converted into crop set-ups. See more

05.01.2022 The increased use of drugs in Australia has posed increased challenges for employers in the mining and oil and gas sectors, according to a recent survey. The AMMA 2016 Drug and Alcohol Testing Survey gathered quantitative and qualitative responses from 53 Australian resources employers, finding only 40% of respondents test for synthetic cannabis. This is amid concerns over the ability of testing to keep up with rapidly changing substances. The report found 65% of respondents ...take a zero tolerance approach to drugs and alcohol in the workplace, while 26% adopt a harm minimisation approach; weighing each incidence on its particular circumstances and risks. Urine and breath testing were widely used on Australias mine sites 90% and 88% respectively with 41% of respondents using saliva testing. Presenting the findings at the Ports Australia Conference in Melbourne, AMMAs director of workplace relations, Amanda Mansini, said although employers are effectively managing the workplace risks, increased societal use of both illicit and prescription drugs is creating challenges. Despite most resource employers recording low instances of positive or non-negative tests, convincing employees to make sensible lifestyle choices outside the workplace remains a significant challenge in managing the potential impact of drugs and alcohol she said. It is also telling that at least 50% of respondents reported that employment laws and union opposition have impacted on their ability to implement the drug and alcohol testing policy of their choice. The main challenges employers recorded in the survey include employees using masking agents or fake urine samples; employees not realising the importance of declaring prescription medication; uncertainty around Australian standards for saliva testing raising practical and legal concerns; and maintaining education and awareness among transient contractor workforces. Mansini also called for companies to be able to select particular policies they find most suitable. The results back AMMAs longstanding position that as the people responsible for creating a safe work environment, employers and site managers must be supported in choosing the drug and alcohol testing policies and procedures that they deem most suitable for their individual workplaces she said. She went on to say that drug and alcohol policies are a critical part of achieving a zero harm workplace, which requires a multi-pronged approach involving community education and awareness, effective testing and laws and regulations that support employers decision making. 05.01.2022 Abstract - In addition to the well-known palliative effects of cannabinoids on some cancer-associated symptoms, a large body of evidence shows that these molecules can decrease tumour growth in animal models of cancer. They do so by modulating key cell signalling pathways involved in the control of cancer cell proliferation and survival. In addition, cannabinoids inhibit angiogenesis and decrease metastasis in various tumour types in laboratory animals. In this review, we dis...cuss the current understanding of cannabinoids as anti-tumour agents, focussing on recent discoveries about their molecular mechanisms of action, including resistance mechanisms and opportunities for their use in combination therapy. Those observations have already contributed to the foundation for the development of the first clinical studies that will analyse the safety and potential clinical benefit of cannabinoids as anticancer agents. ... To summarise, cannabinoids induce tumour cell death and inhibit tumour angiogenesis and invasion in animal models of cancer and there are indications that they act similarly in patients with glioblastoma. Given that cannabinoids show an acceptable safety profile, clinical trials testing them as single drugs or, ideally, in combination therapies in glioblastoma and other types of cancer are both warranted and urgently needed ... We have read and understood Current Oncologys policy on disclosing conflicts of interest, and we declare the following interests: GW Pharmaceuticals and Cellmid fund part of the research conducted by our laboratory. Likewise, a portion of the data obtained by the authors concerning the antitumoural action of cannabinoids is included in three patent applications presented by GW Pharmaceuticals. See more

03.01.2022 Australia - A north Queensland company has been established with the aim of growing medical cannabis in high security vault-like laboratory conditions on the Atherton Tableland.
