15.01.2022 REPORT FROM JULY 2020 MEETING Thanks again to our hosts Sharif Batieh & Yvette James for a great day out in Nana Glen. Allan Thomas shared his expertise re bee nutrition and gave a very informative presentation (the notes of which you will find below). Glenn Locke demonstrated the new Flow-Hive 2. Some improvements include windows on both sides, a refined bottom base, stainless steel beetle tray, an inbuilt spirit level (fancy!) ... and adjustable feet to facilitate the required backward-sloping position. Glenn was keen to emphasise that the Flow-Hive is a harvesting system design, meaning that bees within still need to be managed carefully. John Carroll, our Biosecurity Officer, presented a new Small Hive Beetle trap, then the group split in two to inspect the on-site hives. Thanks to Allan & Glenn for sharing your knowledge in this way. A self-catering lunch was welcomed, followed by the moment everyone was anticipating the lucky door draw, where a number of fortunate attendees left for home with some useful beekeeping tools and equipment. Thanks to all those involved in making the day such a success.

14.01.2022 Pollination expo for beekeepers who do or are thinking of doing pollination are welcome.

14.01.2022 Allan's beekeeping workshops are running at Tamworth & Bellingen. Great opportunity to learn from an experienced beekeeper & trainer.

13.01.2022 Thank you to our hosts Kerry and Garry Shearer for providing a lovely venue for this month’s meeting. There was a good roll up of members and visitors on a perfect beekeeping day. The usual meeting was conducted, followed by an informative... session on swarming, lead by Don Wood and myself. There was plenty of discussions, with lots of questions and answers. Inspections were carried out on two hives. More space was provided in the brood boxes by bringing up a couple of frames, which were replaced with fresh frames. It was suggested that one of the two supers on the hives be removed for the time being. The bees were healthy and quiet. A pleasure to work. A suggestion was made that the Club create a private Facebook group for members to share their experiences. This is separate from the Facebook page that Glenn Locke administers for us. Our secretary, Monica Rich has used her skills to do this. There are already a couple of interesting posts. If you would like to join this group, click the link below. https://www.facebook.com/groups/965664517252815 The next meeting will be hosted by Paul Campbell at the Coffs Harbour Christian Community School, Bonville, on the 8th of November. Regards, Allan

10.01.2022 Last Meeting Our hosts were Monica and Michael Rich in Urunga. It was a well-attended meeting considering the terrible fires and road closures in the district at this time.... The main business of the formal section of the day was ratifying the amendments to the constitution to bring membership of the ABA and the MNC branch in line with the financial year rather than the present calendar year. This was passed unanimously. It was also suggested that members take advantage of the early bird offer which reduces the cost substantially. There was a discussion about the optional public liability insurance, which costs $20. It was generally agreed that it is very worthwhile. Michael outlined his and Monica’s ethos on treading lightly and also saving money. All this is being done on their 700 square metre block. Examples included water tanks, solar panels and smart use of same, yoghurt making, nut milk making, vegetable gardens, bee-friendly planting, worm farm, compost, chooks, bees, growing mushrooms, making kombucha, native bees etc. Two hives were inspected, led by Michael Worraker, Stan, Don and of course Monica who owned the hives. It was decided the flow super could be added to its brood box. Several frames of honey were harvested from the other hive which was a conventional Langstroth. Some frame manipulation/management was performed on the Langstroth as well. Monica set a new standard with her presentation, water jars and the addition of chicken kebabs to the barbeque. Thanks to both Monica and Michael for hosting this meeting. Thank you to all who contributed to the food table and raffle and also to those who assisted in the preparation, washing up, packing up etc.

07.01.2022 Happy New Year I hope 2020 finds everybody well. It was so terrific to finally get some decent rain, after such a dry period combined with the ever-present threat of bushfires. Now life can begin to return to normal. Creeks and rivers are running and dams have had an inflow, as well as bushfires being extinguished. Let's just hope there is more rain in the near future and the impact of drought continues to lessen.... For the bees, they are no longer desperate for freshwater supplies, and there is the promise of future flowering events. As editor of this newsletter, I would appreciate input from members about their experiences during this difficult season. There must be some interesting stories you have that could be shared with members. There has been help offered to those who have an ABN, but moves are underfoot to garner assistance for the hobby beekeepers, who have suffered losses due to the drought and fires. However, finding out how much damage has been caused is difficult, so it would be a start if you could let me know if you’ve lost hives to the fires, and/or if your hives have suffered from a loss of foraging habitat, and/or have been forced to feed a sugar mixture due to that loss. The adoption of the ABA club constitution was agreed upon at the last meeting and this has now been approved by the Dept of Fair Trading. This will now bring us in line with the ABA constitution with the Financial Year running from July to June. This means we will need to hold our AGM before June next year.

07.01.2022 Last Meeting. Our hosts for this meeting were Judith and Darren Barber off Scott’s Head Rd. This was a venue with a difference, with drinking water being shipped in and no electricity. People arrived with wonderous smiles on their faces, as it seemed to be in the middle of nowhere.... However, the day went smoothly with the billy constantly being refilled to boil and the sausages and onion cooked on the gas BBQ. After the usual meeting and some discussion around the changes to conditions in line with Bee Biosecurity, Spring inspections were carried out on the hives. John, Don and Steve capably lead the inspections. The bees were actively coming and going, with no external evidence of any problems. Inside, it was ascertained that the queens had commenced laying well, but appeared to have backed off a little in recent times. This was surmised because there was plenty of capped brood but not a lot of young larvae or eggs. The hives were well situated, off the ground a little with plenty of bush and a creek within flying distance. A barrier system for disease control was in place with all the boxes numbered. The registration number was printed clearly on the hives. There was a strong attendance, with some new faces. As usual, the lunch was spectacular due to everyone pitching in to place something on the table. Merridy did a great job selling raffle tickets and conducting the raffle. I was particularly pleased to win the lemons, as with the flu, I have been making plenty of hot, honey and lemon drinks. Thank you to everyone, especially our hosts, for pitching in and making the day a great success

07.01.2022 Next Meeting- Date-9 May 2021 - yes - it’s Mothers Day! Time-10 for 10.30am start... Address-6 Meadowlands Crescent, Coffs Harbour NSW Host-Paul McLeod pH: 0407 974 037 BYO- Chair, food, drinks, hat, bee protection gear, any outstanding library books Venue notes: This is a suburban location in Diggers Beach. Plenty of parking is available on the streets nearby, but be prepared to walk a short distance if you're a late arrival. Look for the yellow & black balloons on the letterbox. Once you've made it, follow the arrow signs down the left hand side of the house and into the backyard. Paul’s hives are in a busy corner of the garden with room for maybe 6 or 8 people to gather around during the inspection, so we will split into groups if necessary.

04.01.2022 Look what’s coming....

02.01.2022 Expressions of interest. One of our experienced beekeepers will be running a course aimed at raising your own bee nucleus colony. This course will run over 3 to 4 sessions over the period of at least a month depending on queen availability and weather commencing in September (date to be finalised). On completion of the course you will take home your nucleus of bees continuing your journey as a beekeeper. Participant numbers will be capped and all participants must be registered with DPI and have completed a beekeeping course or are able to demonstrate appropriate knowledge and experience.

01.01.2022 Hi all I don’t know how to create a poll here but we would like to share some logos for our club that have come through. By all means please present your logo to our secretary Monica and we will take it to a vote at our June Meeting. ... Please see attached. Enjoy designing your own and looking forward to more contributions!
