24.01.2022 I became a Registered Nurse, as many do, because of an innate sense of wanting to care for and help people. Nurses are often in a unique position where they hav...e the opportunity to make a lasting impact on someone’s life, something I view as a privilege. As a Nurse Counsellor at BreastScreen NSW, my day involves talking with women after their screening mammogram to organise an assessment appointment as well as answering clinical questions. The most rewarding part of my job is being able to support a woman through what can be a very anxious time. I often reflect on a quote from Maya Angelou that I believe stands true; I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. I see women of all ages on assessment days supporting each other and it is these moments that make my job most heartening. 21.01.2022 It was a picture-perfect backdrop for one of the Mid North Coast's biggest charity golf days today as 130 women, dressed in pink, took to the greens to raise funds for local breast cancer patients. A big thank you to Port Macquarie Women's Golf Club for their continued support of our breast cancer patients at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute.

20.01.2022 Participants are needed for a study looking at people over the age of 50 who have recently been discharged from treatment for low back pain. The study will evaluate whether exercising after discharge for treatment for low back pain improves outcomes for people and decreases health care use. 19.01.2022 Make sure you have your four-year-old’s eyesight checked before they start school because this is an important time to detect and treat any potential problems affecting their vision, some of which could impact their school performance and development. Because children rarely complain of eye problems and often don’t realise they can’t see properly, the only way to tell if your child has a vision problem is to have their eyesight tested. It’s vital to have your 4-year-old chi...ld’s eyesight tested to detect potential problems so they can receive appropriate diagnosis and if required treatment. The earlier that a vision problem is detected, the better the chance of successful early intervention, preventing future vision problems or even permanent sight loss. Your child’s vision can be tested for free by the NSW Health Statewide Eyesight Preschooler Screening program better known as StEPS. StEPS screeners visit preschools and early childhood education centres. Your child can also have their vision tested at a local catchup StEPS clinic, at a NSW Health Child and Family Health service or with your GP. 16.01.2022 Today (22 October) is Saffron Day, a day to honour the life of seven year old, Deyaan Udani and to raise awareness for organ and tissue donation in Australia. Deyaan passed away suddenly from a brain haemorrhage while on a family holiday in 2016. Not long prior to the trip, Deyaan had learned about organ donation at school and told his parents he wanted to become an organ donor one day to save others.... When the time came to make a decision about donating Deyaan’s organs, his parents knew there was one last thing they could do for him. Their decision to honour Deyaan’s wish saved four lives. Deyaan’s parents created Saffron Day to honour his legacy and encourage others to have the important conversation about organ donation, like Deyaan did. Saffron symbolises courage and strength, qualities seen in little Deyaan. Orange was also Deyaan’s favourite colour. A pinch of Saffron goes a long way, as does the generous gift of organ donation. 11.01.2022 Courageous canine Charlie is being hailed a hero after staying by his injured owner’s side, trying to keep her warm as she lay in agony for 14 hours. Eighty-five-year-old Maureen broke her hip when she fell in her backyard but her cries for help went unanswered. The next morning Charlie’s ears pricked up when he heard a car driving up the street. He raced out and alerted neighbours who had returned home to their house across the street. The 10-year-old pooch barked continuous...ly and raced back toward his yard. It didn’t take long for neighbour Des to realise Charlie was trying to tell him something. They followed the dog back to his yard and found a very cold and sore Maureen and they immediately called for an ambulance. Clutching Charlie’s photo and praising his heroic efforts as she recovers at Port Macquarie Base Hospital, Maureen says she owes her life to her furry companion. Charlie, who is being doggy-sat by relatives, will no doubt be one seriously pampered pooch when his loving owner comes home. See more
