25.01.2022 Good old R U OK day is here But as you know, R U OK day is every day. Today just reminds us to check - to check in with yourself and others . . Some super important points to remember:... Asking is ALWAYS better than not asking. Listening is ALWAYS better than talking. Listen to your intuition - that will help you know whether they are being honest with you or not. If you’re not sure, ask again. Remind them that you are here for them just in case. If someone confides in you and tells you they are not ok, you cannot go wrong with; - tell me about it - i’m a good listener - is there anything I can do? - you know it’s ok to ask for help - i’m here for you . . FORGET; - I know how you feel. - Reminding them that they are better off than others. - Chin up. These statements all take away from the seriousness of how someone might be feeling. . . Lastly, remember to: Follow up - check on them again soon and be there if they need you. Offer to go with them to get help if they want you to. If you’re the person who isn’t ok, get help, it’s worth it. 24.01.2022 Ever wanted to make a glitter jar? They are super easy and very useful and effective for both play and relaxation . . A glitter jar is an excellent tool to encourage calming down and curiosity. Paired with deep breaths, the visual of the pretty sparkles slowly floating around, and finally settling, helps us become present through our senses, and aids relaxation .... . What you’ll need: * a glass jar - you can use plastic if it’s for a little person, but it’s not as clear. * warm water filled 3/4 up * food colouring (add only one drop and stir it, before deciding to add more - it’s very potent. * glitter - start with a pinch and add to your liking. * clear or glitter glue - about half a bottle . Mix together, replace the lid and shake! However, there is a fine line between giving in to the fears and ignoring them altogether Always acknowledge a child's fears and worries by answering any questions they have and reassuring them, but also try to keep a somewhat positive and 'she'll be right' type of demeanour When children sense that the adult feels confident about something, they are much more likely to feel safe. 01.01.2022 I LOVE this quote So often, we wonder what is WRONG with a child, instead of considering his environment or other possible factors. Is she lacking sleep, connection, understanding or affection? Is he hungry, unwell, bored, hormonal, worried or anxious? Has something happened at school or with friends? . . Start by sitting down with your child, one on one and calmly talking. Say that you have noticed that they are acting this way or that and you are wondering how they are... feeling and if anything else is going on. Remind them that we all feel a range of different emotions, all of which are normal, but that it helps to try to name those emotions so we can understand them a little better and deal with them more effectively . . Remember that very often, children will not know why they maybe acting in a certain way. Heck, most adults struggle to truly understand why they behave in certain ways And they may also struggle to find the right words to describe how they feel. . . Children require a calm, loving grown up to model listening, patience, vocabulary and understanding, while offering possible suggestions to accepting that feeling and feeling it through in a healthy way, such as going for a walk, getting into nature, playing with lego, having a cuddle, venting, writing, drawing, deep breaths, having a rest and of course, meditating . . Another handy hint is to suggest a child use made up words, a sound or a even a drawing to describe how they are feeling, as they may not have the vocabulary . . This whole process may be uncomfortable for you or your child at first, but with practise and patience, it will become easier, and it certainly beats tantrums, yelling, misunderstandings and chaos. Practising this healthy skill will most certainly result in a much happier and peaceful home . .
