01.01.2022 The Ways to Burn Calories Metabolism describes the burning of calories necessary to supply the body with the energy it needs to function. The three major ways we burn calories during the day include: 1. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR): 60-75% of total daily expenditure. Our body needs to supply our organs with energy even while we do nothing and this is our RMR. It is the calories our body burns while at rest, this includes sleeping, sitting, standing, etc. ... 2. Thermic Effect of Food (TEF): 10-15% of total daily expenditure. When we eat, our body has to turn up the heat in our digestive system in order to process the food. It requires more energy than when we are sitting with an empty stomach. 3. Thermic Effect of Activity (TEA): this accounts for the remainder of our total daily expenditure and is higher the more active we are. TEA is any energy that is burned while we are working out or doing any kind of activity, whether that be walking up the stairs, picking up things or lifting hundreds of kilos of weight. Our total daily energy expenditure is the sum of these three components if it is less than our energy intake, we will store most of the surplus energy (positive energy balance), especially as body fat. If it is more than our energy intake, we will burn some body fat stores of energy to provide the energy we need (negative energy balance). The TEA is always directly affected by the amount of activity we do in a day. The more exercise we do, the more calories are burned by this expenditure. Hence, increasing the number of calories we burn by TEA is one way to speed up the fat burning process.
