03.01.2022 W O R D O F T H E W E E K Each month we’ll be exploring a different language group from SA with you, with a weekly word from that Mob. Language of the month: ... WANGKANGURRU The Wangkangurru language is one of the many languages traditionally spoken in the Lake Eyre Basin region, and specifically has deep and long-term associations with the Simpson Desert, the Kallakoopah Creek and the lower Diamantina. Today there are a few full speakers of the language and work is underway to revive and maintain Wangkangurru - literally ‘the hard and strong language’ This week we’ve chosen the word for another desert sky dweller ‘wanpatyara’. It’s pronounced ‘wan-pa-tya-ra’. Find out more about the Wangkangurru language here https://mobilelanguageteam.com.au/languages/wangkangurru/ you can also learn more of the language & pronunciation here https://portal.mobilelanguageteam.com.au/lang/wangkangurru/ Artwork by Two Sisters Talking (Anpanuwa Joyce & Aulpunda Jean Crombie). Please note that other languages in this region, such as Arabana, share some of the same or similar words. This is seen around the world with other languages which have a shared history, such as the word 'baby' which is the same in German as in English!
