24.01.2022 This week we move on to the final chakra of our series - the crown chakra or Sahasrara chakra. Sahasrara is like a screen of consciousness onto which all of the other chakras project. The goal of yoga is to clear Sahasrara's screen so that pure consciousness can reflect clearly. The first step towards clearing the mind is to practice asanas and bring balance to the physical body. We will therefore be working through our lower chakras. And yes, you guessed it, working towards headstands :) We will finish with a long full-body relaxation, followed by a short meditation.

23.01.2022 This week we will be focusing on Anahata, or the Heart Chakra. Heart-openers are a popular focus in yoga classes. This is understandable since the fourth chakra is the balance point between the lower 3 chakras and the upper 3 chakras, integrating the world of matter with the world of spirit. Through this chakra we open to and connect with harmony and peace. This chakra's element is air, so we will begin with a pranayama practice to help balance and tone this chakra, followed by asanas such as passive chest openers, shoulder stretches and backbends.

22.01.2022 This week's yoga classes will take the form of a Functional Flow yoga class. While our classes are always balanced, over the last 2 weeks we've focused a little more on the lower half of the body. This week we'll have a look at the walking gait and how that changes with age, and for classes with runners, we'll have a look at the running gait and how to improve your running gait. As with a traditional yoga flow class, we will still synchronize breath and movement, while investigating the integrity of our yoga postures though exploring alignment, actively engaging key muscles and tapping into body awareness.

21.01.2022 This week we will be focusing on Ajna, or the Third Eye Chakra. As we awaken our chakras, moving energy through the spine, we will focus not only on our drishti, but also on visualizing the chakras during the postures. We will move into postures with the hips above the head and heart, to flush the pituitary and pineal glands, and open energy in the third eye. And finishing by setting strong intentions by being connected to our intuition.

20.01.2022 I recently discovered this vegetarian curry by Ella Mills. Not only is it easy and delicious, but it is a fantastic complete meal for vegetarians. Filled with chickpeas which are a "complete protein" and spinach for your iron needs, who needs meat? I hope you enjoy this nourishing meal as much as I do Spinach & Chickpea Curry 1 Tbsp coconut oil... 1 onion, finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 celery stalks, finely chopped 250g spinach 400g can coconut milk 2.5 cm piece ginger, peeled and finely chopped 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp ground coriander 1 Tbsp curry powder 1 Tbsp ground cumin 24 cherry tomatoes, sliced 2 x 400g cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1/2 lemon 2 Tbsp plain yoghurt Pinch of chilli flakes (optional) salt and pepper Put coconut oil into a large saucepan with the onion, garlic and celery, and some salt and pepper. Cook on medium heat until the celery and onion have softened. In a separate pan, wilt 100g spinach with a splash of boiling water. Once wilted, add half the coconut milk and use a hand blender to blitz the spinach so that it's smooth. Once the celery and onion have softened, add the ginger, mustard seeds, coriander, curry powder and cumin. Let the spices toast for a minute or so before adding the pureed spinach, cherry tomatoes, chickpeas and the rest of the coconut milk, plus a big sprinkling of salt and lots of pepper. Bring to a boil, then turn down to simmer. Simmer for 15 - 20 minutes, adding the rest of the spinach for the final few minutes. Once the spinach has wilted, add a squeeze of lemon and the yoghurt plus a sprinkling of chilli flakes, if you're using them. Serve with rice or flatbreads.

19.01.2022 I found it interesting that this came up about anger, a sign of excessive 3rd chakra energy. On a more personal level, I can relate to this when I see anger in my children - they hate it when I try to block it with false positivity or suppress it in the name of peace :) On the other hand, another reading I can relate to: "Like fire, out of control, anger can be destructive. In control, banked, contained and nurtured, it can provide much needed warmth and energy. When we manage our anger with dignity and resolve, without bitterness and rancor, others begin to take us seriously".

19.01.2022 One of the most important aspects of good communication is good listening. This is why Vishuddha chakra governs not only our throat, but our ears as well!

18.01.2022 Ah yes! I remember now!

18.01.2022 To welcome the start of spring this week, we have been focusing on twists and core work. According to Ayurveda, accumulated kapha is aggravated in early spring. Since Kapha is comprised of the Earth and Water elements, we must work with the opposing elements and welcome more Air, Space, and Fire energy in our Yoga postures. This means that we will need poses that incorporate movement (Air), promote lightness (Space), and increase heat (Fire) in the body. Twists and core work are used to actively eliminate old and stagnant energy that may have accumulated over winter, creating heat and promoting circulation.

15.01.2022 Ok, it's not pretty, but I'm enjoying the process Eka Pada Koundinyasana - a work in progress. Happy Friday!

15.01.2022 Over the past few weeks we've been focusing on core work and twists. This started with a lot of abdominal muscle strengthening. Last week we discussed what core strengthening includes and included a pelvic floor focus. This week we'll keep building on our core focus and include hip flexors. I look forward to seeing you on the mat

08.01.2022 Continuing with our spring theme this month, we will be placing more emphasis on twists and core work for the whole of September. This week we will explore some other kapha reducing practices as well such as kapalabhati pranayama, waking with the sunrise, and eating lighter foods.

06.01.2022 This week we will be focusing on Visuddha, or the Throat Chakra. With the element of this chakra being ether, our main focus will be on creating spaciousness around the throat and neck area throughout our practice. Some throat opening and compression postures will more specifically focus on balancing our 5th chakra, while some breathing practices that create sound in the throat will help to activate this area.

06.01.2022 This week we are focusing on the shoulder's core - at the scapulothoracic joint and glenohumeral rhythm. For a little more understanding of what we're looking at, you may want to have a little read - http://physiofocus.ca//scapular-stability-your-shoulder-co. Or if you're not that interested in anatomy, you can always just rock up to class, feel it in your own body and enjoy. You may want to book your spot for Tuesday's class. Town is quite busy at the moment, and I'd hate for anyone to miss out I look forward to seeing you on the mat

04.01.2022 Online classes are on hold for a while as I dive back into face2face classes, personal training and private classes. However, this chapter is not closed! A couple of students are still interested in online classes, particularly early morning and evening classes. If you're keen, please let me know and I'll try to reschedule a convenient time
