23.01.2022 The sit on the leash method, also known as the ‘calm the hell down’ method, uses leash pressure to force the dog into a settle. This is a handy exercise to practice, even when just sitting watching tv, with dogs that are a bundle of energy and just can’t seem to calm down or are constantly needing to do something (even if that something is pacing around the house for no reason). Work through the struggling and the whining till the dog offers some nice calm and relaxed behavio...ur. Stretch is out for longer each time you do it, rewarding with lots of love or a play session afterwards. Most of what we do in dog training, is working a dog in drive to get them motivated to do what we want, but when you just want to relax at home or out and about (at a outdoor cafe or food establishment) and want your dog to lay there with you calmly, you first need to build a solid foundation for this behaviour, commonly known as an ‘off switch’, which as the name suggests, is like flicking a switch on the high drive energy that you are usually working the dog in.

18.01.2022 Little Poppy the toy poodle and Rio the Maltese, have been practising their ‘place ‘ commands at home. They have also been working on manners in the home, not barking at guests, not jumping on their mum, sits, downs, and walking nicely on leash! These little cuties have been a pleasure to work with.

17.01.2022 This is the side of dog training that not many people talk about. You can have a dog that performs amazing tricks and obedience work, but thy same dog can be a disaster at home because it’s not given boundaries and guidelines that create structure and a safety net that the dog understands. 16.01.2022 Hyping up and trying to shovel treats into a reactive dogs mouth is not going to break that dog from what it’s hyper focused on. These dogs were not even ready to have been exposed to what set them off this early. You need to start at where the dogs comfortable where you can get some level of focus from the dog instead of this reactive mess. If you’re are going to attempt to do positive only training like this, you have to take it slow and not just throw the dog in the deep end.

15.01.2022 Had a double training session on Friday with Esmée the chocolate Labrador and Borris the staffy mix. Both dogs get super excited by other dogs and are both working on being calm in public (and a little bit at home).

15.01.2022 Have started working on some off leash heel work skills with Esmée. This was her first time at it with me, and she did pretty damn well.

15.01.2022 Working on some duration stays out and about today with Esmée (but still in an area with minimal distractions). She’s such an excitable dog, and while she’s eager to perform a command, she also gets bored waiting for the next one. So I’m trying to slowly lengthen the amount of time she is having to hold her position.

14.01.2022 I did some training today with Esmée the chocolate lab, in the QLD Museum and around Southbank. Working on her excitement levels around other dogs, and trying to get her to work out of drive so she’s not so high strung for her handler.

12.01.2022 Florence is a 1 year old Assistance dog in training and today she had some exposure to lifts, busses and trains. She was a little confused by the lift moving but showed no fear. Was not bothered by the bus and was even happy to hop on in and sit by the go card scanner. We walked up and down the train platform, and while the train whistle startled her, she recovered quickly was was not phased by the train itself!

07.01.2022 Esmée’s heel work is coming along beautifully! From having to constantly hold a tight leash to being able to walk her with the leash around one finger! Go girl!

04.01.2022 Some laser eyed focus from Esmée, Tiffany Avery-Dakin girl, during our training session this afternoon. She’s such a happy go lucky girl and is coming along great with settling down when not being asked to do anything (she’s over keen, and just wants to be doing everything at once!)

02.01.2022 While interactive and puzzle games are great for working our dogs minds, so are meaty bones with the fur still attached. The fur/pelt acts as great fibre intake, but also means the dog has to work through it to get to the meat and bone inside. This cow hock (Ankle and hoof) will keep my dog busy for a few days (I take it away after a few hours so that it doesn’t spoil in the heat).
