25.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNES COMMENTS: Sourced from Dennis Young I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked.. Just a minute, answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90s stood befo...Continue reading

24.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNES COMMENTS: 5 GOOD NEWS STORIES from FUTURE CRUNCH 1. Africa is officially free from wild polio. 25 years ago it paralysed more than 75,000 children across the continent. Since then, billions of oral vaccines have been provided, preventing 1.8 million cases. Its one of the greatest healthcare success stories of all time. If you get a chance today just pause, and take a little moment to appreciate this extraordinary achievement. 2. In the USA its election season..., so naturally this one didnt make headlines. Since 1965, Gallup has been polling Americans about whether they want immigration levels to decrease, increase, or remain the same. In 2020, for the first time in the polls history, more Americans said they wanted to increase immigration than decrease it. Cato 3. In perhaps one of the most globally consequential yet under-reported stories of the year, China has issued new rules for its distant water fishing fleet. The countrys Wildlife Protection Law will now apply at sea, ships will no longer be allowed to go dark or approach marine protected areas, ship captains who break the rules will lose their license for five years and company managers will be banned for three years. 4. A series of studies in the US, the UK and 26 other countries has shown that loneliness during the pandemic has not only levelled out but, in certain cases, improved. People have found ways to maintain social connection, and theres been a renewed appreciation for the importance of relationships. If these trends continue, the social recession many feared could turn out to be a social revolution. 5. Since the 1970s, more than 90,000 km2 of desert in Niger has been regreened, thanks to a technique known as farmer-managed natural regeneration. These huge forests of thorny trees are now productive farmland, yielding over a million more tons of grain than before. A desolate land, once bereft of life and on its way to desertification, has been utterly transformed. All sources: http://futurecrun.ch/goodnews See more

23.01.2022 MODBURY MESSAGES: September 13, 2020 Jonah 2 - Knowing God: The reason why we exist

22.01.2022 KEVINS CABLES Last Sunday Service we were able to safely seat nearly 70 of our church family complying with the density rule of 1 person per 2 square metre in the chapel and whilst entering and departing the church premises observing the 1.5 metre distancing rule. It was great to see some of our congregation being able to return to our Sunday services. Thank you for respecting those rules and this coming Sunday we invite you to select your own seating in the chapel whilst ob...serving the red crosses on the vacant seats between other church members or guests. We remind you that we need to continue to avoid singing together as a congregation. A review of the recommendation to avoid congregation singing will be undertaken by the Church Planning Council when the easing of restrictions is announced. As you enter Church on Sunday, you will be greeted at the front door, for safety you can sanitise your hands, observe the 1.5 metre distancing rule as you walk towards the Registration desk to check in, receiving your communion elements, place your offering in the box, and you can now select your own seating in the chapel whilst observing the red crosses on the 2 vacant seats between other church members or guests. The Ushers for this coming week can assist you with your seating and a COVID Marshal will also be available to assist. For those people who arrive after the Church service begins at 10.00am you will be allocated a seat close to the chapel door. Vaughan Thomas has already forwarded you an email explaining how to register not only for this coming Sunday but also for the next 4 weeks until Sunday 4 October. For those members who have difficulties in registering you can phone Vaughan. We still need to continue to comply with maintaining the Attendance Register in accordance with the COVID-Safe Plan and members who have been rostered for Sunday Services duties will also be automatically registered by Vaughan. During the week we conducted a training session for the appointment of seven Church COVID Marshals who are responsible for the care and safety of not only our church family but also for our visitors as we serve our local Modbury community. Many thanks to those members who have completed their on-line training and attended the training session.

22.01.2022 RUTH'S REJOICINGS: Philippians 4:7 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. A song to sing today: https://youtu.be/ebFji3n0cCA

21.01.2022 KEVIN'S CABLES: (Sourced by Carole-Anne.) Globally, we are now into our ninth month of this pandemic. These various quotes made me laugh. Which one is your favourite? 1. So let me get this straight, there’s no cure for a virus that can be killed by sanitizer and hand soap? 2. Is it too early to put up the Christmas tree yet? I have run out of things to do.... 3. When this virus thing is over with, I still want some of you to stay away from me. 4. If these last months have taught us anything, it’s that stupidity travels faster than any virus on the planet, particularly among politicians and bureaucrats. 5. Just wait a second so what you're telling me is that my chance of surviving all this is directly linked to the common sense of others? You’re kidding, right? 6. People are scared of getting fined or arrested for congregating in crowds, as if catching a deadly disease and dying a horrible death wasn’t enough of a deterrent. 7. If you believe all this will end and we will get back to normal just because we reopen everything, raise your hand. Now slap yourself with it. 8. Another Saturday night in the house and I just realized the trash goes out more than me. 9. Whoever decided a liquor store is more essential than a hair salon is obviously a bald-headed alcoholic. 10. Remember when you were little and all your underwear had the days of the week on them. Those would be helpful right now. 11. The spread of Covid-19 is based on two factors: 1. How dense the population is and 2. How dense the population is. 12. Remember all those times when you wished the weekend would last forever? Well, wish granted. Happy now? 13. It may take a village to raise a child, but I swear it’s going to take a whole vineyard to home school one. 14. Did a big load of pajamas so I would have enough clean work clothes for this week. 21.01.2022 DAVIDS DEVOTIONS: GOD CREATED LAUGHTER Sourced from One-minute Bible studies. Joy, humor, and laughter should be part of everyones spiritual life. They are gifts from God and help us enjoy creation. James Martin Sometimes we forget that God created laughter. ... Think about it. When God was creating mankind, He equipped us to experience a special burst of enjoyment...a way to release stress and relish the unusual, crazy things in life. But did you know that laughter also has these 4 additional benefits? It improves: blood flow blood sugar levels immune system response sleep patterns God tells us in Proverbs 17:22 that "a merry heart does good like a medicine." And He means it! Laugh, rejoice, sing, and enjoy the God who gave us laughter. Let it sweep through your soul today and improve your overall health. See more

21.01.2022 BRENDANS BLESSINGS Although we can often spurn instruction and follow the wrong examples around us, Gods instructions are for our benefit and lead to blessing. May your delight be in the law of the Lord!

21.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNE'S COMMENTS: Borrowed from a well known Franciscan. You can have flaws, be anxious, and even be angry, but do not forget that your life is the greatest enterprise in the world. Only you can stop it from going bust. Many appreciate you, admire you and love you. Remember that to be happy is not to have a sky without a storm, a road without accidents, work without fatigue, relationships without disappointments. To be happy is to find strength in forgiveness, hope in... battles, security in the stage of fear, love in discord. It is not only to enjoy the smile, but also to reflect on the sadness. It is not only to celebrate the successes, but to learn lessons from the failures. It is not only to feel happy with the applause, but to be happy in anonymity. Being happy is not a fatality of destiny, but an achievement for those who can travel within themselves. To be happy is to stop feeling like a victim and become your destiny's author. It is to cross deserts, yet to be able to find an oasis in the depths of our soul. It is to thank God for every morning, for the miracle of life. Being happy is not being afraid of your own feelings. It's to be able to talk about you. It is having the courage to hear a "no". It is confidence in the face of criticism, even when unjustified. It is to kiss your children, pamper your parents, to live poetic moments with friends, even when they hurt us. To be happy is to let live the creature that lives in each of us, free, joyful and simple. It is to have maturity to be able to say: "I made mistakes". It is to have the courage to say "I am sorry". It is to have the sensitivity to say, "I need you". It is to have the ability to say "I love you". May your life become a garden of opportunities for happiness ... That in spring may it be a lover of joy. In winter a lover of wisdom. And when you make a mistake, start all over again. For only then will you be in love with life. You will find that to be happy is not to have a perfect life. But use the tears to irrigate tolerance. Use your losses to train patience. Use your mistakes to sculptor serenity. Use pain to plaster pleasure. Use obstacles to open windows of intelligence. Never give up .... Never give up on people who love you. Never give up on happiness, for life is an incredible show. 20.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNE'S COMMENTS: Lets think positively about others and their personality traits, and help them find outlets for their skills and abilities so they can share their love around.

19.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNE'S COMMENTS: A professor gave a balloon to every student, who had to inflate it, write their name on it and throw it in the hallway. The professor then mixed all the balloons. The students were given 5 minutes to find their own balloon. Despite a hectic search, no one found their balloon. At that point the professor told the students to take the first balloon that they found and hand it to the person whose name was written on it. Within 5 minutes everyone had their own balloon. The professor said to the students: These balloons are like happiness. We will never find it if everyone is looking for their own. But if we care about other people's happiness....we'll find ours too. Here’s to caring about everyone’s happiness.

17.01.2022 BRENDANS BLESSINGS Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them? For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:33-36

17.01.2022 BRENDANS BLESSINGS To live wisely in Gods world, we need to recognise the limits of our own understanding. May we put our trust in the Lord first, putting his ways before our own, and may he direct our paths.

17.01.2022 KEVIN'S CABLES: The Induction Service of our new Minister Ross was held last Sunday. It was a milestone event that God blessed with 67 attending the service. Peter Barney, our Churches of Christ State Minister, gave us a message based on Revelations and he spoke about the challenges of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor and how we as a Church today are also facing challenges with Church decline, and currently facing the devastating impact of the COVID pandemic. Peter encouraged... us to celebrate Christs Love for us in new fresh ways at our Sunday Services. Because some of you were not able to attend the church service a recording of this Induction Service is now available on this page (see below), on the Church Website, and a DVD is also available on the table at the entrance to the Chapel. We thank those members who have completed and returned your How Can I Serve Survey Form. As this is the last Sunday set aside for the return of the Survey could you please complete your Survey and place it in the labelled Survey Box which is on the table outside the chapel doors. Your cooperation will assist with our Church Rosters and share the church life serving work in a more effective manner. Ross will be conducting MeetN'Greet meetings with individual Life Groups over the next few weeks and will provide you with details of the overall process of his Intentional Interim Ministry. Kevin M. 17.01.2022 DAVIDS DEVOTIONS: Matthew 16:13-20* Goes Bush Fishing, sinking, flailing, drowning Blustering, flustering, arguing, clowning... Sometimes trusting, oft with a lurch On this rock Christ builds his church. Setting out with Christ to walk his way Recognising that our faith can sway, Devoted to grow and serve and search On this rock Christ builds his church. Some keys and a rooster tell Peters story Seems stars and mud lead him to glory On all of this does our pilgrimage perch For on this rock Christ builds his church. (c) Dennis Ryle 2020, Used with permission.Peter Declares That *Jesus Is the Messiah When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, Who do people say the Son of Man is? They replied, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. But what about you? he asked. Who do you say I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus replied, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[c] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[d] loosed in heaven. Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

17.01.2022 CLIFF HANGERS: Who Is Worthy? Scripture Reading Revelation 5 The Lion of the tribe of Judah . . . is able to open the scroll and its seven seals. Then I saw a Lamb . Rev 5:5-6 The apostle John, one of Jesus’ closest followers, received amazing visions of Jesus, heaven, mighty angels, and much more while he was exiled on the island of Patmos (Rev 1:9). John describes these visions in the book of Revelation, and together these passages help us to grow in faith so that we... can learn to live faithfully for Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, who came to lay down his life for us so that we can be saved from sin and death and live forever with God. Our reading today describes a surprising, dramatic scene in heaven. God is seated on the throne, and he is holding a scroll that is sealed with seven seals. It seems that no one is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll. But then an elder says to John, in effect, Look! The Lion of Judah has triumphed, and he can open the scroll! And John sees a Lamb, looking like it had been slainand this is no ordinary lamb. This is Jesus, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). As the Lamb takes up the scroll, the many thousands of angels in heaven and all the creatures and elders around the throne sing out, Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise! And in the following scenes Jesus, the Lamb, opens the scroll to portray the story of how God frees us from sin and death and sets us on a journey of living by faith. Prayer Thank you, Jesus, for providing our salvation. Help us to live by faith in you. Amen. Sourced from Today Devotional (modified). See more

16.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNE'S COMMENTS: This little article points to honesty, belief (or disbelief) and wisdom. A man finds a wallet with $700 in it. A few days later, he reads a notice stating that a wealthy man has lost his wallet and is offering a $50 reward to anyone who returns it. He soon locates the owner and gives him the wallet, and the rich man counts the money and says, I see you have already taken your reward. The poor man responds, What are you talking about? The wealthy ma...n continues, This wallet had $750 in it when I lost it. The two men begin arguing, and eventually they go to court to sort out their differences. Both men present their case, the poor man first, then the wealthy man who concludes by saying, Your Honor, I trust you believe me. The Judge says, Of course. The rich man smiles, and the poor man is devastated. Then the Judge takes the wallet out of the wealthy man’s hands and gives it to the poor man who found it. What are you doing? the rich man yells angrily. The Judge responds, You are, of course, an honest man, and if you say that your missing wallet had $750 in it, I’m sure it did but if the man who found this wallet is a liar and a thief, he wouldn’t have returned it at all, which means that this wallet must belong to somebody else. If that man steps forward, he’ll get the money otherwise, it stays with the man who found it. What about my money? the rich man asks. Well, we’ll just have to wait until somebody finds your wallet with the $750 in it. See more

15.01.2022 DAVID'S DEVOTIONS: 1 Chronicles 29:11 English Standard Version Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. King David was leading the whole assembly of the Israelites in a prayer of praise, glorification, gratitude, and acknowledgement, after taking up a collection of great abundance of materials for... the building of a new Temple which God had forbidden him to build but it was a job for Solomon to do. Note: Reading the whole chapter 29 will give you a good idea of the magnificence of the temple to be. The point of building such a magnificent structure was not for the glorification of man but to glorify God and I pray that readers of this message will remember the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendour of God. For everything in heaven and on earth is his. His is the kingdom, and he is exalted over all. May all be filled with a worshipful Spirit for God and may the glory and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you now and always. David L. (Encounter) See more

14.01.2022 KEVIN'S CABLES: CareWorks stands alongside Churches of Christ and its local congregations, and seeks to build relationships such that together, we can reach out and share God’s love to broken people in tangible ways. Last Christmas over 300 food hampers and hundreds of toys were distributed to the clients of Domestic Violence shelters. In addition many families have been supported through valuable financial counselling services resulting in the easing of pressing debts and w...orrying financial commitments. Geoff Payne the CEO of CareWorks has reported that although 2020 has been a tough year, with staff and volunteers experiencing many requests for help on a daily basis. The love and sacrifice that people make to reach out to others who struggle is immense. Each week an amazing group of volunteers attend the Torrensville and Noarlunga sites and provide material assistance to hundreds of individuals and families in the Southern and Western suburbs. Hope Street Youth programs in the Playford area and many other local and country churches serve and support community care programs with generous financial and prayerful support for CareWorks. We are mindful that there are still those in our community who struggle with day to day issues. Now more than ever before, we know we can make a profound difference in the lives of others. Your cash donations will enable CareWorks to purchase food hampers and toys for delivery to the shelters for Christmas. It would be appreciated if your donations can be received by 24th November to ensure the gifts and purchases can be sorted and distributed by CareWorks staff and volunteers to those who are struggling with young families and living in shelters. If you seek more information and details of how you can donate please refer to the CareWorks Christmas Appeal flyer on the table by the Chapel door. Kevin M. See more

14.01.2022 DAVID'S DEVOTIONS: From One-Minute Bible Studies: (Sourced by Carole-Anne) Keeping In Step with Christ We always get out of step when we try to bear our own burdens, solve our own problems, and operate in our own power. ... We need a yoke* that connects us with Christ so we can move in step with Him: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30). Yoked to Christ, we walk where He walks: 1. Dwelling on His Word (Colossians 3:16). 2. Rejecting popular worldly philosophies (Colossians 2:8). 3. Following His purposes (Ephesians 2:10). 4. Walking in His power and strength (Philippians 4:13). Jesus says, "Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be" (John 12:26). 13.01.2022 DAVID'S DEVOTIONS: Psalm 46:10 Amplified Bible Psalm 46:10 Amplified Bible... Be still and know (recognize, understand) that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations! I will be exalted in the earth. In this 21st century like the twentieth life can become extremely busy and noisy. The average Christian who is seeking to grow his/her faith and knowledge of God finds it very difficult to fit a quiet time for prayer and meditation amongst the busyness of the daily routine." The Psalmist here in Psalm 46 records a command by God himself that leads us to make an opportunity for ourselves to sit still and quietly contemplate God’s word after eliminating from your own mind all worldly concerns so that we worship Him expressing our joy at the amazing Grace of God expressed in the wonderful gift of salvation through the shed blood of his Son on the cross. Some might find this a nuisance but the benefits of being still and in the presence of the Father bring great joy and peace to one’s heart as we grow in faith and wisdom. He (God) gave us this gift of life (eternal) because of his great Love for his creation and he did not want to lose anyone but grant to all those who receive and believe in his Son Jesus Christ life eternal and the forgiveness of all their sins. So now we can break our silence and praise our Heavenly Father, thanking him for his unfailing love. Praise God, David L. See more

Her husband of 70 years had passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told ...her room was ready. I love it, she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. Mrs. Jones, you havent seen the room . just wait. That doesnt have anything to do with it, she replied. Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesnt depend on how the furniture is arranged, its how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. Its a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open Ill focus on the new day and all the happy memories Ive stored away just for this time in my life. She went on to explain, Old age is like a bank account, you withdraw from what youve put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing. 08.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNES COMMENTS: Borrowed from a well known Franciscan. To be happy is to stop feeling like a victim and become your destinys author. It is to cross deserts, yet to be able to find an oasis in the depths of our soul. It is to thank God for every morning, for the miracle of life. Being happy is not being afraid of your own feelings. Its to be able to talk about you. 07.01.2022 BRENDANS BLESSINGS May your eyes be fixed upon what cannot be seen, as God renews us even through our trials. Therefore we do not lose heart. 06.01.2022 KEVIN CABLES: GOOD NEWS FOR OUR CHURCH FAMILY ATTENDING SUNDAY SERVICES Following concern from members who were disappointed that they were unable to attend Sunday services, Planning Council has reviewed our Church Service registration booking system and our COVID-Safe Plan to enable more members to attend church on Sundays. Whilst still maintaining the approved Church COVID-Safe Plan using the density rule of 1 person per 2 sqm rule, we have reduced the number of vacant s...eats between household groups and singles from three to two seats. This will allow us to safely seat up to 80 people and still comply with the SA Government guidelines. As a result of this change, I am pleased to report as of today we have booked nearly 80 people and it will be good to see some long standing members joining us this Sunday. The Ushers for this coming week can assist you with your seating, and it is envisaged that on future Sundays you can find your own seating whilst still respecting the two seat spacing rule. Vaughan Thomas has already forwarded you an email explaining how to register not only for this coming Sunday but also for the next 4 weeks until Sunday 28 September. The Booking System allows you to continue to book ahead 4 weeks in advance. Those members who have difficulties in registering can phone Vaughan as we still need to comply with maintaining the Attendance Register in accordance with the COVID-Safe Plan. Members who have been rostered for Sunday Services duties will also be automatically registered by Vaughan. We thank those members who provided feedback about our Sunday church service and as a result we have been able to review the seating arrangements whilst still complying with the Church COVID Safe Plan. We also thank you for the excellent response for those members who have completed and returned your How Can I Serve Survey Form. Your cooperation will assist with future Church Rosters and assist in sharing the church serving duties in a more effective manner. Kevin M. See more

05.01.2022 DAVIDS DEVOTIONS: 1 Chronicles 29:11 English Standard Version Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours.

04.01.2022 LYNDA'S LOUNGE ROOM: It was a wet and overcast day and could have given me cause to feel a little ‘flat’! Driving home I looked up into the sky. and there amidst the clouds and grey sky a beautiful rainbow appeared. The colours were spectacular. What a wonderful artist our God is with colours so beautiful, vibrant and perfectly drawn! I thought of God’s promises and the hope that the rainbow represents! Originally God established the rainbow as a covenant between ourselves an...d Him. ‘I have set MY rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the Covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my Covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life’ Genesis 9 verse 13 -15 With all that’s happening in our world it is understandable to feel flat, stressed, and perhaps depressed at times but God will never desert us and always promises hope in the midst of the darkness! 03.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNE'S COMMENTS: A telling parable when approaching Christmas and our society's emphasis on materialism. A rich father who wanted his son to know what it was like to be poor brought him to live with a farming family for a few days. The lad stayed there for 3 days and 3 nights. Back in the car on their way to the town, his father asked him:... "And your experience?" "Fine," replied the boy. "Did you learn anything?" The boy then explained: "1 We have a dog and they have four of them. 2 We have a pool with treated water. They have a river with crystal clear water, fish and other good things 3 We have electric lights in our garden, but they have the stars and the moon to light them up. 4 Our garden extends to the fence. Theirs up to the horizon. 5 We buy our food; they cultivate, harvest and cook it. 6 We listen to CDs ... they hear a sustained symphony of birds, crickets and other animals ... ... all this, sometimes accompanied by the singing of a neighbour who works on the farm. 7 We use the microwave. What they cook tastes much better cooked on a slow fire. 8 We are surrounded by alarm fences to protect ourselves ... They live with open doors, protected by the friendship of their neighbours. 9 We are connected to the telephone, computer and television. They are in communion with life, sky, sun, water, fields, animals, friends and families. " The father was impressed with his son's feelings. Then finally the son comes to the conclusion: "Thanks for showing me how poor we are! Every day we get poorer because we no longer look at nature !!! " See more

03.01.2022 CAROLE-ANNE'S COMMENTS: Written by Jeff King: a personal story. Christmas is all about giving, not just of gifts, but of time, love, and maybe a little bit more of this than any other year: sacrifice. But there was a time in my life when I didn’t want to give when God asked me to. In January of 1985, I was a brand new, on-fire Christian, fresh out of college. I was in church one day when the pastor took up a special collection. I heard the Lord tell me very clearly to give a...ll the money I had left $80. I had no job and no job prospects so that $80 was my security and castle wall. Being a new Christian, I figured that God didn’t understand how finances worked on earth. So we had the following conversation: Lord, I can’t give away that money, I said. That’s all the money I have and I don’t have a job yet. Give it away, He said. Lord, that’s crazy, I can’t give away my last few dollars. I don’t have anything to live on. Give it away. Now, He could have reassured me that He owned the cattle on a thousand hills and could provide anything and everything I needed. But He didn't. He simply told me again to give it all away. So I did. I didn't really trust, but I obeyed. Right after the church service where God directed me to give away the little money I had, a church member told me her office was looking for some cheap muscle for a couple days while they moved to another office. That couple of days job turned into several months of work until I started my real job, and I didn’t need it anymore. I obeyed God and He turned $80 into almost $3,000. That was quite a lesson for a new believer. That day, I learned about God's generosity and security; I learned how to obey Him even when it's inconvenient or costly. Satan works overtime to focus our eyes on the material world and encourage us to look at the future with anxiety and fear. He whispers to you that you are alone, God has forgotten you, and there's no help coming, and all hope is lost, filling us with the worries of this life. He tells us to look to our own pile of money as the bulwark against a frightening world. But all the while, God sits beside us, quietly saying: Trust me. Your money offers you no answers. I AM the provider. I AM the sustainer. I AM life. Your money is a snare; turn your gaze away from the world and find LIFE in me. Jesus said it is more blessed to give than to receive. If you’ve lived a few years, you know the profound truth of that statement. No material thing, no pile of money, no matter how high it goes, ever touches or feeds your soul. But when you give in response to God’s prompting, the feeling that wells up in your heart is priceless! It is indeed more blessed to give than to receive. Be Blessed. See more
