25.01.2022 Parcel Room Blitz: There’s been plenty happening at Cooma Railway Station, with the Parcel Room receiving great attention to prepare it for its role as our prim...ary exhibition space. Cooma’s expert floor fixer Tom Brown has commenced work in the Parcel Room, and he has got to know the floor very well. He has expended great effort in preparing the boards, hand-punching hundreds of nails to ensure they will not impede the floor sanding and sealing. It seems that back in the days of the NSW Government Railways there was no expense spared when the floor was originally laid the boards were double nailed everywhere. Needless to say, the Parcel Room floor has endured well and has not moved at all. Our electricians, Chris and Matt, returned to continue with the electrical fittings, which includes the installation of a number of reproduction vintage power-points in the Parcel Room, along with the installation of the light in the Booking Office. The light complements the recently completed ceiling plaster work undertaken by John Murphy, which in turn completes the overall ceiling work in the four station rooms being restored. The volunteer team has likewise been busy, with Darryl continuing with the installation of skirting boards. Michal has run further security cabling through the rooms, while Dave, Gordon and Esther have continued painting - concentrating mostly on the architraves so that the period-correct roller blinds (which have been ordered and made) can be installed. The final major work in the station rooms involves the fitting of the gas fireplaces and the cabinet work needed to complete the installation of the fireplace mantles, Waiting Room seats and Booking Office cabinets and counter. The gas fitting work is being progressed, and the carpentry is well in hand thanks to our consultations with our local artisan Anthony VanderPlaat. Anthony will start with the finishing and installation of the Waiting Room seating, as the colour of the finish on the original cedar seats will be matched to the new work on the fireplace mantles and Booking Office joinery. Finally, over in the District Locomotive Engineer’s building, Paul the tiler has finished the grouting of shower cubicles with only the cove skirting to be completed. It’s now a matter of the fittings and trimmings, such as the glass shower walls in the lady’s toilets, and the partitions and doors in the gent’s toilets, to finish the construction work in our headquarters building.
