08.01.2022 Today is the United Nations World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). Join with us and others to voice your opposition to elder abuse. Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community, the UN says. Elder abuse is any act that causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust such as a family me...mber or friend. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect. If know of or suspect elder abuse, Relationships Australia advises that you should: Keep a record of events. Taking note of signs and symptoms may help those who investigate, to effectively address the abuse. It is generally not advisable to confront the abuser without careful thought. Reassure the older person that there is help available. If the older person is willing to get support, help them contact a relevant organisation. See Where to get help below. If they are unwilling to get help, provide them with emotional support and offer contact details of support services should they want them later. Keep checking in on them where possible. Its important that an older person feels in control of the help seeking process. To find support services in Australia visit https://www.relationships.org.au//rela/what-is-elder-abuse or www.seniorsrights.org.au

07.01.2022 Did you know that right from the start, boys suffer more illness, more accidents and die earlier than their female counterparts. A boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old. Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (that's five men a day, on average, in Australia). ... Accidents, cancer and heart disease all account for the majority of male deaths. During Mens Health Month this June, organisations around the world, including Western Sydney University - Men's Health Information & Resource Centre are Working Together for Men's Health. See more at : https://www.menshealthweek.org.au/ and https://www.menshealthmonth.org/

05.01.2022 COVID-19 Restrictions Boost Tech Uptake Among Older Australians Our second survey in a multi-phase study, covering Australians response to Covid-19 restrictions, shows that many older Australians used technology that was new to them. We also detected increased confidence in the use of technology.... The percentage of older people who used tech for the first time needs to be considered in light of the number who had a certain level of digital engagement prior to COVID-19. Also, general use of a platform, like smartphones, does not always transfer to the use of specific online solutions designed to reduce the risk of COVID-19 contagion. This is surprising, given the key finding of this survey the high uptake of, and satisfaction with telehealth consultations.
