24.01.2022 Today is the day!!!! The sun is shining, the weather is sweet.. makes you want to move your reggae feet! Modern Artifacts at The Addison Road Street Food Markets this afternoon is the place to be with a chill soundtrack from The Protesters! And of course, you can delight in gorgeous art from a range of local creatives. Meet Katarzyna Niedzielak and her work presented under the name Art by Amoeba. In her own words:... "My art teacher once told me: "you have to study art", I replied I had to try earning money instead, as art will not provide for my living. I tried doing it for 20 years until I stumbled upon felt. I had a considerably hard upbringing which made me look at life through imagination lens and that helped me survive the hardest of times. Finding my love for textile art, and through that bringing fantasy to life, has been the most wonderful experience of my life. The magic and beauty in creating something with my own hands is indescribable. I encourage everyone to find their own expression of creativity. After all those years I completely agree with my art teacher, I have to make art :)" And the outcome is gorgeous! We are so thrilled that Katarzyna is joining us for our launch event and can't wait to see what treasure she has created <3 <3 Modern Artifacts at the Addison Road Street Markets kicks off from 4pm to 9pm at The Addison Road Community Centre 142 Addison Road Marrickville See you in the sun this afternoon. There will be bubbbbbles! (no, really, there will be bubbles! Bubble machine fun - it is not just for the kids ;-) )

24.01.2022 Imagine being named Nakusa or Nakushi, which mean unwanted in Hindi? Gender discrimination is alive and well in the world - and not just in India of course! However a re-naming ceremony for 285 girls with such hurtful names is a step in the right direction....

24.01.2022 Soo true! :) <3 <3

23.01.2022 Helllooooo!! Here at Modern Artifacts things are slowly, in a cruisy summer kinda way getting back into the swing for 2012.. Heres to hoping you had a wonderful new year! And also a beautifull little vid to remind us that we can have a positive impact in the world - Xmas time or no! :) :) :)

22.01.2022 We cant resist sharing one more of our participating artists with you before the day is out! Award-winning Australian designer Albert Tse Metalsmith originally wanted to study pottery, but when that course was full a friend convinced him to apply for jewellery design at Alchima in Florence, Italy. There, Albert learnt how to combine traditional jewellery techniques with contemporary design, creating a modern take on classic style. In 2017 he won the contemporary accessories... and jewellery award at the Sydney international jewellery fair, for his Memento Sydney cufflinks. Today, he runs his eponymous brand from his studio in Sydney, working with sterling silver and rose gold to create beautiful, contemporary jewellery for both men and women. From the adventure-inspired, handcrafted Wanderer ring to the sand cast Eon pendant designs, Alberts work is stylish, understated and ideal for any occasion. Come check out his work at our launch tomorrow (and perhaps win the best Xmas pressie in the house award this year by taking one of his stunning pieces home with you!). Modern Artifacts presents local art, craft and design at the Addison Road Street Food Markets from 4pm to 9pm tomorrow the 16th of December 2017. See you there for an afternoon through to evening of fine food, fabulous company and exceptional local artists wares to utterly sate your senses :-) <3 https://www.facebook.com/Alberttsemetalsmith/videos/1467102040032852/

21.01.2022 Looking forward to Sydney Design Festival starting next week - so much to see! For a start, 'Common Good' looks fantastic :-) "Common Good is a survey of contemporary design from the Asia-Pacific region that explores design-led responses to social, ethical and environmental challenges by a new generation of socially-engaged designers"... https://sydneydesign.com.au/2018/event/common-good/

21.01.2022 "Celebrated choreographer William Forsythe has been expanding the boundaries of dance for over four decades and beginning in 1989, he began work on his "choreographic objects," a series of sculptural installations. These physical, object-based extensions of his choreographic practice have become an integral aspect of his work. On view now at Gagosian Le Bourget in Paris, the exhibition William Forsythe: Choreographic Objects continues this experimentation with three works: Bl...ack Flags, Alignigung 2, and Towards the Diagnostic Gaze (Paris). For the occasion, filmmaker Ulrike Stumpp created a video documenting these works. The video also includes an in-depth interview with Forsythe on the concepts and techniques underlying the exhibition." Click the link below to view these fascinating works. 16.01.2022 Only one sleep to go to our launch event Modern Artifacts at The Addison Road Street Food Markets So, its about time we introduced some of our participating artists! We are thrilled and honoured to welcome Studio Enti - the design practice of ceramicist Naomi Taplin, producing porcelain tableware, lighting and home decor. ... Each unique piece of handmade porcelain is made to be used and enjoyed. A strong belief in the necessity of good design and concepts of longevity and sustainability are the major driving forces behind the work of Studio Enti. Naomi believes that in order for products to be valued and to fulfil their destiny through use, they need to cleverly cross boundaries of function and beauty, and have embedded within them an inherent respect for the materials and processes that they are created from. "The ability to work in the development of everyday objects brings a sense of grounding and purpose to my practice. I am interested in creating beautiful, functional pieces that connect with the human psyche. Pieces that have the ability to tell a story and to enrich the tasks and the lives of the user". A stall not to be missed tomorrow! https://www.facebook.com/Studioenti/

16.01.2022 We are on the final countdown to our launch tomorrow - and yep.. getting pretty excited now! So, without further ado, introducing our next artist showing work: Janny Grant. In her own words: "I'm a Sydney based artist/ sculptor/ visual designer who lives a creative life, with all 3 disciplines feeding and informing one another. I enjoy the process, especially when 'I'm in the flow', and tapping into my source energy. Years of practice and experimentation across various medi...ums have led me to develop a visual language that is otherworldly, nuanced and flowing. Inspired and guided by my expanding field of awareness, I like to coax the hidden subject matter and characters out of my paintings. The more you look the more you will see. I work in the moment, it is an instinctual and totally engaging process, a meditation of sorts. There is a synergy that links both my paintings and sculptures. I hope that this same energy resonates with you and invites you deep into my world." We can't wait to see what she brings to share with us tomorrow! See you for our launch makers market running from 4pm to 9pm at the Addison Road Community Centre 142 Addison Road Marrickville. http://www.jannygrant.com/

The Addison Road Community Centre (ARCCO) has a long history of bringing community together and the evening of the 16th December was no exception. What a fantastic night! Much delicious food from around the world was shared, the live soundtrack by The Protesters was off the chart, and we were so very happy to bring together such a talented collect...ion of local makers for our launch event. 07.01.2022 Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening the bank deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course! Each of us has such a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no ba...lance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow." You must live in the present on today's deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and success! The clock is running. Make the most of today. To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade. To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the train. To realize the value of ONE-SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an accident. Treasure every moment that you have! And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time. Remember that time waits for no one. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present :) :) See more

04.01.2022 Inspirational! And vital <3

04.01.2022 Not to be missed documentary screening - BORDER POLITICS follows human rights barrister Julian Burnside as he traverses the globe examining the harsh treatment meted out to refugees by most Western democracies. This contemporary story is about the threat to human rights, the loss of democratic values and our increasingly heartless treatment of ‘the other’. Seventy years after the world constructed international conventions to ensure the horrors of World War 2 wouldn’t be re...peated, Burnside finds it terrifying to see Australian and other western political leaders exploiting fears around border protection to extend political power. Burnside defines humanity with the universally recognized Golden Rule Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You as a benchmark. He questions whether the West has lost its moral compass by adopting ideas that reject humanity and undermine democracy. He concludes this erosion of human rights poses a threat to the very democratic values that define Western society. Trailer here: https://vimeo.com/258754624
