24.01.2022 Is your favourite on the list...?
23.01.2022 Its been a busy week celebrating both Speech Pathology Week and Book Week together! We all have our favourite book - maybe its one that makes you laugh out loud or it might be one that moves you deeply and makes you cry. Books are such powerful tools. The books on this list are no exception, because their stories help children to learn about being resilient and having a growth mindset! Happy reading!
22.01.2022 October 19 is International Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day. Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects 1 in 14 people. It is as common as Dyslexia and much more common than Autism yet no one really knows about it. DLD is diagnosed when children fail to acquire their own language for no obvious reason. This results in children who have difficulty understanding what people say to them and struggle to articulate their ideas and feelings. DLD can also significan...tly hinder a childs academic progress. It is well and truly time for this "hidden" condition to come out of the shadows, so please share this post to raise awareness and help children with DLD, their families and their teachers get the support and services they need! #DLDABC #devlangdis #SpeakUp4CommRights
22.01.2022 Children are never too young or too old to hear books read aloud. Reading aloud is a wonderful way to bond with your child as well as strengthen their skills in writing, listening, creativity and more. According to the Scholastic Australian Kids and Family Reading Report, more than half of children aged 0-5 are read aloud to at home 5-7 days a week. This frequency declines to four in 10 kids aged 6-8, and continues to decrease with age. Of those children aged 6-8 whose parents no longer read books aloud at home, half did not want their parents to stop. You can read the full report at http://www.scholastic.com.au/readingreport
22.01.2022 Happy World Book Day! A great opportunity to bring out an old favourite or try something new! What will you be reading?
22.01.2022 When parents start to wonder whether their childs communication skills are normal for their age or not, they often look to others for reassurance and guidance. Teachers, doctors, family, friends, the list goes on. However, a new study published in the Australasian Journal of Learning Difficulties reinforces the notion that parental judgements are valid and provide a strong basis for defining and diagnosing speech and language difficulties. So trust your gut parents! If you think something is not quite right or are just really unsure, dont worry about what other people say or dont say. Go straight to the source and go ahead and contact a speech pathologist for advice! You wont regret it!
22.01.2022 Children learn more effectively when adults engage them in everyday activities that are based on their interests... so throw out the flash cards and worksheets!
22.01.2022 I wonder if you have as many of these wonderful books on your shelves as I do? Did you know that exposure to rhyme helps children to develop their listening and thinking skills, and vocabulary and comprehension skills? We also know that being familiar with rhyme helps children to detect the small, phonetic components that make up words, and that this detection is an essential skill to learning to read and write. Lets not forget that despite all of that learning potential, rhyming picture books are often just GREAT FUN to read!
21.01.2022 Im a bit excited because some very dear friends of mine welcomed their first baby into the world today! I know their beautiful boy will be lucky enough to be surrounded by lots of wonderful "baby talk" (not to mention lots of kisses and cuddles!)

19.01.2022 One of the first questions I ask parents who have concerns about their childs communication skills is, "Have you had their hearing tested?". Usually the answer is "no", with most parents quick to assure me that they dont have any concerns about their childs hearing. However sometimes its not that simple...
19.01.2022 Its a new year and a new look for Modern Speechie! New website coming soon...
18.01.2022 Did you know that there are four different kinds of lisps? Some types are commonly seen in younger children as they are learning and refining their speech sounds, and often disappear on their own. Others are not part of normal development and should be treated as soon as possible. This post will help you find out which is which and what to do next...
18.01.2022 Not a bad way to start the last day of the SPA Conference.
17.01.2022 I love Lego. Sure when i accidentally step on a piece I might be singing a different tune, but on the whole Im a fan. Its a great way for children to play and use their imagination, but you can also use lego to help children learn some pretty important concepts too...
16.01.2022 I am so passionate about giving children lots of free time to "just" play! Sometimes it can be hard for parents to step back and let their children run the show, but it is such an important thing to do because open ended play fosters imagination, experimentation, creativity, independence, problem solving and long term memory!
16.01.2022 What a great afternoon with the staff at Hoxton Park Public school! It was such a pleasure to collaborate with so many passionate and experienced educators and provide them with information and strategies they can use to support children with communication difficulties!
15.01.2022 When parents have questions or uncertainty about their childs speech and language development, quite often they are told "not to worry", reassured that "all children are different" and advised to just "wait and see". This type of "advice" can actually be very harmful for many children! Please share this post with your family and friends so that we can raise awareness and encourage parents to seek timely advice from a speech pathologist whenever they have concerns.

13.01.2022 When people think of a child having communication difficulties, they often assume there are issues with talking and thats all. However this is not the case. Early intervention will help not only your childs speech and language skills, but their social skills too! Dont forget to Like our page for more free information and tips to help your child be the best communicator they can be.
12.01.2022 My kids love the Sago Mini Apps! Its not something they get to use everyday or even every week, but when they do get the chance to have a turn Im right there with them. We laugh and talk about whats happening and what the characters are doing. Too much screen time isnt good for anyone, especially children, but a little bit of age appropriate screen time in moderation can be another way for parents and children to engage with each other and have some fun!
12.01.2022 Its Speech Pathology Week! The theme for this year is "Communication Access - Everyone gets the message". Communication is a basic human right, yet there are many barriers for people with communication difficulties. Here are some very simple ways we can all help...
10.01.2022 This is a brilliant article! So often i hear schools say, "Yes, we do phonics" but in reality they are barely skimming the surface. This article has great explanations of what should be happening in schools as well as practical ways to make it happen!
10.01.2022 Help! My child is having trouble with reading and spelling. I dont know whats going on! They know all of their letters, they have a great vocabulary and understand everything I say, but for some reason they just arent getting it! Sound familiar? There are many different reasons why children might experience difficulties with reading or spelling, however there is one reason that is often overlooked Phonological Awareness!
09.01.2022 Children are never too young to start hearing nursery rhymes! Far from simply being a sweet little song to lull children off to sleep, nursery rhymes actually give children the building blocks of their first language and teach them patterns of language that continue to develop as they grow!
09.01.2022 Almost ready to start... "Phonics in context is not enough: synthetic phonics and learning to read. This should be interesting... #phonicsdebate

08.01.2022 Positional terms such as in, on, under, next to, in front and behind are very important for children to learn, as these words and concepts are often found in instructions used at home and even more in educational settings. In this post we have some free picture cards for you to use to help your child learn these concepts.
06.01.2022 What does a speech pathologist know about reading? Quite a lot in fact! An extensive body of research on reading instruction shows that there are five essential skills for reading. Did you know that all five of these skills can be assessed and treated by a speech pathologist? 1. Phonemic Awareness - The ability to identify and manipulate the distinct individual sounds in spoken words. For example, understanding that the word "shark" contains 3 sounds "sh+ar+k".... 2. Phonics - The ability to decode words using knowledge of letter-sound relationships. For example, knowing that the letter c makes a hard "k" sound when followed by an "a", "o", "u" or another consonant, but makes a soft "s" sound when followed by an "e" or an "i". 3. Fluency - Reading with speed and accuracy. 4. Vocabulary - Knowing the meaning of a wide variety of words and the structure of written language. 5. Comprehension - Understanding the meaning and intent of the text. If your child is experiencing reading difficulties contact a speech pathologist for advice.

It is at least as common as Dyslexia and much more common than Autism, yet no one really knows about it. Language Impairment has been referred to as the hidden disability and its time for that to change!
