25.01.2022 Our lovely specialist PE teacher, Danaë, prepares fantastic sports lessons for each class every week. In the photos you can see young students learning overarm and underarm throwing techniques. Each activity also fosters team building skills and good sportsmanship.

25.01.2022 Are you after a good playdough recipe? Little L from our PP/Year 1 class shows us just how to make an awesome no-bake playdough.

24.01.2022 Cutting with knives and grating - these are essential skills that young children need to develop. It's so great to see these 3 and 4 year old Kindy kids learning to use knives and graters safely. Bravo!

24.01.2022 With June upon us, we enter the season of Makuru. This is the coldest and wettest time of the year with more frequent gales, storms and rains. Traditionally, it was the time to travel inland to the hunting areas and people would turn to the shelter of the forests and the ranges for protection from the storms coming off the Southern Ocean. Known as the season of Fertility, tuberous plants were collected as food and inland water sources were replenished by the rain. Swans (Kuljak) also became a ready supply of food. As the birds began moulting, they were less able to fly and therefore easier to catch as a source of nourishment.

23.01.2022 What a start to the 2021 school year! While it is unfortunate timing with everyone excited and ready to return for the new school year, we have certainly been fortunate in the management and low level impact of the pandemic on our day-to-day lives here in WA to date. So here at Moerlina we will just take a breath, and while the children have another week of holidays, staff will continue planning and preparations for the term, and indeed the year ahead. We have some terrific p...rojects planned and are really looking forward to getting back to business. In the meantime, one of our Kindy parents from last year, Ebony Frost (Halcyon Creative) wrote and illustrated a book explaining COVID and why we have to lockdown for younger children. Vanessa has recorded herself reading the story to share with the lovely school community. Thank you Halcyon Creative for giving us permission to upload this video! If you would like to purchase a copy of this book, please go to: https://www.paypal.com/instantcommer/checkout/XQV5K56RQYJVN

22.01.2022 Once a Moerlinian, always a Moerlinian. This afternoon my son Lincoln (Year 2-Year 5, 2007-2010) is catching up with his Moerlina buddies Matt Y, Hamish, Matt A, Jacob and Tansy. So cool! They're all now 20 or 21.

22.01.2022 The Moerlina Kindergarten children proudly present ‘The Alphabet Song’. They made the letters out of sticks, stones and shells.

22.01.2022 The Year 1/2/3 children are at it again! This time they needed to solve capacity riddles. As part of a mix up of our narrative lessons and our Math lesson, we ventured through a terrifying dungeon on our way to defeat the evil wizard Garamesh. Students had to follow clues to solve the correct order of potions by their capacity to escape the climax of our story - a trap room full of wizard fire! By defeating 5 of Garameshs riddles, each more challenging than the last, our heroic students escaped the room and saved the day. Do you think you have what it takes to defeat Garamesh?

22.01.2022 What a wonderful (and interesting) term we have had! We hope you have an amazing 3 week break and look forward to seeing you again next term, which starts on Tuesday 28 July 2020.

19.01.2022 Kaya! Wanjoo! Welcome back, everyone! We hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful, long summer holiday! It's only been two days, but school is already back at full steam. Here are some snapshots from today.

19.01.2022 How do penguins stay dry? Our little scientists from PP/1 can tell you as they have been researching animal adaptations in their STEM lessons this term. In the photos you can see the children investigating how wax repels water.

18.01.2022 The Year 4 - 6 students demonstrated their scissors skills this week in their "Birds and Branches Paper Cutting" Art lesson with Candy. They carefully glued their cutouts to a contrasting background to produce a stunning art piece. We will be posting their finished work next week.

18.01.2022 Look at these self-portraits by students from the PP/Year 1 class! They're absolutely fabulous.

18.01.2022 It's a Pokémon maths tournament! Gotta catch them all? Of course, we do! Then its just a matter of practising our basic addition and subtraction strategies to level up our Pokémon, then battling to see who the ultimate Pokémon trainer is! Students applied a range of their own learning goals in this enjoyable math-based adaptation of Pokémon. Year 1 students practised adding up single-digit numbers using efficient mental strategies, then used multi-base arithmetic blocks (M...AB; blocks of hundreds, tens and ones) to track their power levels and battles. Year 2 students adapted the game to their goals of using place value written addition strategies to add tens and ones on paper to track their power levels and battles, while Year 3 students used the same approach but included subtraction. The end result was a solid hour and a half (they refused to stop!) of focused mathematics to discover who would be the ultimate Pokémon trainer and win a rare Eevee card to train and fight with. The tournament is still continuing, and students are opting to use their spare time and YOYO to continue training and battling. Who knew maths could be so engaging?

18.01.2022 Bunuru is the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Hot easterly winds continue with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons if you're close to the coast. Therefore, traditionally this was, and still is, a great time for living and fishing by the coast, rivers and estuaries. Because of this, freshwater foods and seafood made up major parts of the diet during this time of year. Bunuru is also a time of the white flowers with lots of white flowering gums in full bloom, ...including Jarrah, Marri and Ghost Gums. Another striking flower that is hard to go past is the female Zamia (Macrozamia riedlei). Being much larger than that of its male counterpart, the huge cones emerge from the centre of the plant with masses of a cotton wool like substance. As the hot, dry weather continues the seed upon the cones change from green to bright red, indicating they're ripening and becoming more attractive to animals, particularly the emu, that will eat the toxic fleshy outer. http://www.bom.gov.au/iwk/nyoongar/bunuru.shtml Photo credit: Photographer - Mark Gray Name of artwork - "Ghost Gum" https://www.markgray.com.au//limited-edition/ghost-gum.php

17.01.2022 Here's an update to the Year 4/5/6's paper cutting project with our Art teacher, Candy. Don't they look great?

17.01.2022 This sounds super fun!

16.01.2022 While some kids might be thrilled at the prospect of an extra week of ‘school holidays’, others may be disappointed or feel anxious about what the lockdown means for them. Telethon Kids Institute researcher and registered psychologist, Dr Monique Robinson, says parents should keep a close eye on their children this week and beyond.

16.01.2022 Today our young ELC - Year 1 Nature Adventurers roasted the sweet potatoes they mined over a firepit. They let them cool down a bit before peeling them and making sweet potato mash. Yum! But the fun isn't over yet! They took some charcoal from the firepit and wrote numbers and drew shapes on the paths. Here's the link to the sweet potato mining post in case you've missed it: https://www.facebook.com/watch/

15.01.2022 We enjoyed a wonderful day at Karta Gaarup (Noongar for King’s Park) last Tuesday. 11.01.2022 Last week our PP/1 and Year 4/5/6 buddies went to a park to investigate what made it special. On returning to the school, they wrote down the features they liked about the park and made suggestions for improvements. They brainstormed elements of an awesome park/outdoor play space and will be submitting their ideas in a proposal to Nedlands Council, who are planning to update a nearby park New Court Green. Here is a sneak peek of the project.

11.01.2022 Our ELC and Pre-Primary/Year 1 Nature Adventurers had a fantastic time mining sweet potatoes from our garden last week. After writing down their guesses as to how many they had collected, the potatoes were lined up and the children counted them alongside their teachers, Vanessa and Dell. The classes are planning to roast their sweet potatoes in our firepit. What an amazing learning experience!

08.01.2022 In its classic sense, tinkering is about puttering around with electronics or machines, but in this more up-to-date definition, tinkering is about playing with materials and figuring out how just about anything can be assembled. Tinkering is about hands-on experiences, learning from failures, and unstructured time to explore and invent. And through the processes of exploration and invention lies the potential for innovation. https://tinkerlab.com/why-is-tinkering-important/

08.01.2022 Every Wednesday, the Kindy children search for books to borrow in the school library and engage in conversations about authors and what kind of books they like or dislike.

06.01.2022 As part of their "About Me" unit, our Kindergarten children created self-portraits and then voiced their images on Chatterpix. Take a look!

06.01.2022 Salm 'alaykum! Hello! This semester the Year 4 - 6 class have been studying Ancient Egypt. For one of their tasks, the students learnt about the shaduf (also spelt shadoof) and its importance to the Ancient Egyptian civilisation. Shadufs were used to haul water out of the Nile River to irrigate the land for farming purposes. After investigating how shadufs work, the students created their own shaduf and used it to water the newly planted mint and chives seeds in their miniature farmlands.

06.01.2022 Take a look at the sketches and paintings of Australian birds by our Kindergarten children! Aren't they fantastic?

05.01.2022 There was a lot of sensory exploration happening in the Nature Adventurers session as the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary/Year 1 children sunk their hands into mud, sand, leaves and, of course, a bowl of water absorbing polymer balls. The children then collected sticks to create their own wooden looms.

03.01.2022 Today is the beginning of the Noongar season 'Makuru'. The season is represented by the colour dark blue as it symbolises rain and cold weather. Makuru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year in the South West. It is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season. Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of the Black Swan or 'Mali' as they too prepare to nest and breed. https://www.ecu.edu.au//cultur/nyoongar-six-seasons/makuru
