23.01.2022 Due to Covid, we will not be able to post any queens until lock down is abandoned... pick up will be the only option until further notice. The picture below was taken from Aust. Post magazine few days ago. For those of you who are unaware, on many occasions sending a parcel to surrounding suburbs took 35 days or more... some parcels are still waiting to be sorted!
22.01.2022 Make sure your brood boxes are: 1. not honey bound; 2.do not have many frames of pollen, 3. Are not too old where the bees have abandoned them... It will also help to have: - Young queens, 1-2 years old - check regularly for queen cells - No queen excluder for most part of spring A young queen, which has access to workable frames, in a good location has very low chance of swarming. Clipping the wings of a queen, crushing queen cells every couple of weeks etc. Are futile methods of managing swarming as they do not deal with the real cause of swarming. Final note, if you live in the suburbs make sure that your bees do not swarm: the sight of a swarm will frighten most people. Every year I get called to the same addresses!!! Keep well M

03.01.2022 A few years back, Dama contacted an international supplier of beekeeping supplies, who directed her my way. She spent about 2 weeks with us, and became a very good friend of our family. At the time, she was a phd candidate here in Melbourne, with a very prosperous business in downtown St. Kilda. She wanted a crash course in beekeeping, and she had all of the traits of a very dedicated student. Bees to here were just one block in her future endeavour. Her plan was simple: go b...ack to where she was born and help the disadvantaged. How? Plant moringa trees and educate the locals about their health benefits. She did just that. We have kept in touch ever since and she always updates me on her achievements... in the last hour of this week, on a quiet Friday afternoon, I received some of her news. Her message made me feel valued, grateful and very humbled, indeed. I have never wished I had her courage and audacity like I did today... to do exactly what she did! By the way, apparently I was the first man to introduce beeswax rolling machines, through Dama, to Sri Lanka!!! Who would have thought! I will go home with a good conscience... knowing that the extra time I "waste" with some potential keepers could have remarkable pay-offs... Keep well Moe See more

03.01.2022 When you do one of our beginners courses we show you each and every step of the way I handle bees, literally! Our next course on the first Saturday of April will be around the theme of easy beekeeping, I.e., Opening your hive half a dozen times a year. This is roughly the times I do...
