06.01.2022 We have a strong tendency to link tissue changes with pain. We use our "common sense" to state that joint surface changes, disc degeneration, microscopic tendon... tears, etc are the direct causes of pain. Yet: Dramatic changes in bone density and structure seen in osteoporosis doesn't cause bone pain. Hair loss doesn't cause headaches. Wrinkles aren't correlated with face pain Losing your sight from age related changes to the eyes doesn't cause eye pain. Going deaf through degeneration of hair cells in the cochlea doesn't cause ear pain There are just as many rotator cuff tears in the pain free shoulders of those who have above elbow amputations as their non involved side You’re happy about the development of increased density of bones, bigger muscles, and calluses on your hands in response to stress, yet worry about bone spurs that are likely just adaptive changes in response to stress. That scar on your knee from falling off of a bike when you were 6 hasn't ever hurt you or been adhered, so why do you think all the sudden you have painful scar tissue that has mysteriously developed? Your ears and nose look a lot different than mine. You are tall and I am short. I have long femurs and you have long tibias. His neck is a shorter proportion for his body and hers is long. Why shouldn't your spine, feet, knees, and shoulder posture too? Variation is normal. We must be slow to place blame and pathologize variances and adaptations

06.01.2022 Starting in the next few weeks I will be taking bookings for cancer rehabilitation sessions. Last year I was lucky enough to work with Ally Hately from Margaret River Yoga School to bring the Life Now Yoga program to Margaret River. Subsidized by the Cancer Council we provided yoga sessions to people with cancer and their carers. Although I have seen cancer up close in my own family it had always left me feeling lost and helpless. Teaching this class made me realize that ther...e is heaps that we can do and that people can do for themselves. Our participants were hugely generous in sharing their experiences with us and clear about what they needed to move forward. One thing that was clear was that we are so fortunate to have an amazing medical system available to us. But it is hard to get back to normality after sometimes months of exhausting treatment and/or surgery. Talking to our group gave me the kick I needed to undertake the PINC & STEEL cancer rehabilitation course. It is phenomenal how much of a positive effect the right physical activity can have on fatigue, symptoms and long term wellness and function for people with cancer. I completed the course this week and have already had multiple enquiries from people wanting to become more active in their own wellbeing. Cancer Rehabilitation covers many aspects of the journey. It is as wide ranging as helping you navigate your way through fatigue, post surgical rehab and staying active during chemotherapy to getting back to all your normal activities from housework to sports. Whilst some of it focuses on exercise there is a lot of self-care, relaxation, time management as well as maintaining range of movement, strength and scar management. It is a highly individualized service designed to meet you wherever you are at. Please do get in touch directly if you would like to find out more [email protected]
