25.01.2022 Lesson 1.1 Aa sounds. That tricky little "a"

25.01.2022 Julia Donaldson is one of my favourite authors. Here is some of her work reimagined for these days. Enjoy.

25.01.2022 Background knowledge is always a vital key in all future learning. In order to learn something new we need to peg it something we already know. That is why Im always planning lessons which reinforce past skills while gently introducing new skills.

24.01.2022 Lesson 3.3 - The cool cat sat in the city. Hard and soft C.

If youd like the Easter bunny to visit - PM me your address and Im sure he can make a special visit next Sunday. Happy Easter

21.01.2022 Another awesome day homeschooling. We had storytime and talked about fables and morals. Lachlan created his own story and drew a picture inspired from a story about a squid. We did addition and subtraction on the abacus and wrote out some simple equations. ... We played games with word puzzles and did letter writing. We sounded out words with 3 letter puzzle cards. We practiced at words and an words and played a switch it game to find similar words by changing the vowels. We talked about time oclock and half pasted and counted the minutes by ones and 5s. Lachlan also completed some worksheets for clocks. It was a fun day. Now the government is planning to return the kids to school. Im going to try and make the last of my homeschooling days extra special.

21.01.2022 It is with a heavy heart that term 3 classes are now cancelled.

21.01.2022 Homeschooling today. Lachlan and I played scrabble junior. He kept a list and made a tally of the words we found. Listing words was a suggested activity from his school. Lachlan wrote out 23 words in total and practiced all the letter sounds heaps of times throughout the game. He asked to play the game again next week. ... We played I spy and did the scavenger hunt with a prepared material. His school asked for Lachlan to compose a sentence about a story he liked. We chose to write a Mothers Day card instead. Lachlan wrote, Dear Mum, thank you for building LEGO with me. Love Lachlan. We did some craft painting and discussed colour mixing and aboriginal art. On the mugs he was painting he originally wanted to do an aboriginal theme. For reading - I had Lachlan read Humpty Dumpty and then mixed up all the first sounds. Lachlan went to great effort to make sure none of the first sounds were correct to make an extra funny poem - such as Sumpty Yumty cat on a Pall. We did jumping jacks counting backwards from 20 and Lachlan taught me some stretches he knows. Next week we will use the oven to bake his artwork onto the mugs so it will last forever. I had a wonderful afternoon. Thank you xo

20.01.2022 Loving the view from my classroom today. Today is the last day of my holiday reading program and honestly I am absolutely thrilled with the progress the kids made in such a short time. Term 1 spots will be one on one and times are very limited.

17.01.2022 Toy review - MierEdu Magnetic Art Board

17.01.2022 To all the mums sharing a special day with their families today. I hope its a wonderful day. Its days like today that I miss my mum very much and wish she got a chance to meet her grandson Marco. She would have thought he was awesome. My mum, Fiona McDonald fought so hard during her life to celebrate children, support their development and mental health. Her work on the Cradle to Kinder framework is what motivated me to implement my program in her home in Balwyn North. He...r passing is not just a loss to me and my siblings but also hundreds of children across Victoria. Particularly, children raised in high risk situations who deserve to access to love, support, educational and mental health services. Over the past five years Ive had the honour of working with so many beautiful mums and amazing children. Thank you so much. I miss my mum very much. I miss her wisdom and guidance. Now, I have a son of my own and so Ill make sure on days like today, Ill take my time to celebrate our relationship. Happy mummas day everyone.

17.01.2022 Some interesting stuff in this series. Highly recommend this !

15.01.2022 I hope everyone has been keeping safe and well. As we all know many small businesses have had to close their doors to help minimise the spread of Covid19. Back in March, Molena Learning also closed its doors. However, with Victorian schools also closing their doors to non-essential workers I was given a wonderful opportunity to work with past students who have been home-schooling. It has been an absolute joy to see for the first time the hard work and many years of laying fou...ndations for our earliest learners pay off as they thrived in a new learning environment. So, thank you to the wonderful families that have trusted me with their childrens education over the past 6 years in Balwyn. I have received some advice and Molena Learning is okay to re-open in a limited capacity. However, due to the small size of the classroom I am limited to 2 children at a time and to practice social distancing. Classes will be offered to kids between the ages of 20 months and 4 years. *As per usual materials will be sanitised before and after use. *Hand sanitizer will be available at the door and in the toilets. *seats and tables will be arranged to ensure social distancing. *I will refrain from hugs and high fives. *Any child with a cough, runny nose, fever should not attend sessions. *Due to the unpredictable nature of kids runny noses and government restrictions, I will also make changes to my fees so that all parents are welcome to pay on a weekly/ casual basis. Classes will resume on Tuesday (2 JUNE) and Wednesday (3 JUNE). Below are the available times. Classes will run for 4 weeks and finish on 27 JUNE. Tuesday 9:30am (FULL) / 11:30 / 1pm Wednesday 9:30 (FULL) / 11:00 / 12:30 / 2:00 Over time, I hope that everyone will get back into their normal routines. I am aware that as restrictions are eased the number of infections in Victoria may rise and I will be operating on a week by week basis. In the event of a known Covid19 infection within the Molena Learning community I am agile and transparent enough to lockdown, clean/sanitize and inform my students and families. In the meantime, where possible, please support your local small businesses we have been having a tough time and I appreciate all your support.

15.01.2022 Need help with homeschooling? I only have two spots available - Wednesday mornings and Thursday afternoon. Last lockdown I worked through each childs school curriculums, literacy, numeracy, science, movement, music, Japanese tutoring as well as adding the Molena learning curriculum and materials. If you know anyone that needs a couple of hours support please let me know. If the above times arent suitable - I can also send my sister... Stay safe this lockdown See more

05.01.2022 I have been busy putting together a special reading program for Foundation and Grade 1 students for the summer holidays. Groups are limited to max 2 students per group. Lots of engaging literacy games to focus on phonics, decoding, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, writing, fine motor skills, concentration, memory, critical thinking and background knowledge (special themes). ... 05.01.2022 Sorry everyone - with Melbourne entering another lockdown for the next seven days - all classes are cancelled. Except for this kid who will subjected to nothing else but me and the hello song for seven straight days!

05.01.2022 Today with my prep/foundation student homeschooling focused on numeracy. We played money bingo which involved counting out coins to various amounts up to $2 with cards and real coins. practiced patterns with coloured penguins and counting by tens we played with equations using a balance beam. This little boy also diligently wrote out all his equations. played a very serious game of dominos ... did a science experiment to see which coins became the shiniest in vingar, household cleaner and water. In another session we were asked by the school to focus of fl, cl, bl, sl and gl words. We used the scrabble tiles to make those words and added other fun words. We also played monopoly junior for counting, following directions but also introduced the concepts of debt and bankruptcy . Another game that has proved enormously fun is Rush Hour - a problem solving critical thinking game that the kids cant get enough of. Next week homeschooling will be coming to an end for the Preps. But I am available for grades 2 and 3 if anyone needs help until we all go back to school

05.01.2022 A sound and AT words. I know I sang the wrong word in the song. Thats a challenge for the kids... find my mistake

05.01.2022 RIP to Sir Ken Robinson, an eloquent and indefatigable defender of the role of the arts and creativity in education. His TED talks made him world-famoushis pre...sentation called "Do schools kill creativity?" remains the most popular TED talk of all timeand he wrote widely, including major books on creativity in 2001 and 2015. Robinson was knighted in 2003 for his distinguished career in service to the arts. He was a staunch critic of standardized tests and compliance-based classrooms, and an unapologetic champion of every kind of creative endeavorfrom theater, to music, film, painting, dance, and everything in between. He died yesterday after a brief battle with cancer. His voice will be greatly missed.
