15.01.2022 #Repost Introducing one of our up-and-coming scientific superstars - Dr Tom Williams, CSIRO Synthetic Biology Future Science Fellow. Hey everyone , I’m Tom and I’m excited to introduce you all to the world of biotechnology !... I remember when I was 14 and I saw a textbook figure on all the possibilities of biotechnology. From then on, I was hooked! I knew I wanted to engineer living things and get them to do something useful. Fast forward to 2010 and I became interested in synthetic biology after reading articles from Craig Venter’s group on whole genome synthesis. I realised it was technologically possible to design an entire organism . Now I’m fortunate enough to be part of our amazing @mqmolsci and @mqscieng community. My role involves using synthetic biology to achieve engineering objectives despite dealing with overwhelming biological complexity and incomplete biological knowledge. Most days you’ll find me in the lab early before popping out to grab a with my team before we head back to the lab or get stuck into writing/admin/grants and strategising for future projects. If you see me around campus, make sure you say Kia Ora (yes, I’m a kiwi!) and ask me about the time I lost 10kg in a week in the Antarctic Dry Valleys Or just hit me up for more info about synthetic biology and how you can join our biotech fam! #mymq #macquariuni #csiro
