19.01.2022 REST is one of the biggest influences on the outcome of your training sessions. Depending on what you are training for, how you manipulate your rest intervals between sets or efforts is one of the main ways to alter your training effect. The longer the rest period between efforts (3-8 minutes) the higher the quality of work you will be able to repeatedly perform. This length of rest is most useful for low volume high intensity speed and power based training. ... Moderate rest periods (90sec - 4 min) allow for an increased session volume, greater muscular fatigue and a better adaptation to strength based outcomes. Minimal rest periods (less than 60 seconds) are more conducive to work capacity and endurance based applications. Generally most conducive to high volume and low complexity movements. Of course there are always variations on these but in general when your program prescribes a rest period. It is there for a purpose. 03.01.2022 Adding more load to your bar isn’t the only way to progress. Sure it’s the gold standard to test, looks bad ass and probably easiest to measure in a general setting. But before you add more weight there are a number of other variables you can alter. Time Under Tension - add in a controlled eccentric for 2-3-4 seconds or even pauses at the highest tension portion of the movement. Volume - Been working the old 3 sets of 10 reps for a while, try 4 x 8, 6 x 6... Less reps per set, more total sets, higher overall volume. Velocity - Same weight, same reps, same sets. Greater intent and higher bar speed will create a higher workload. Even a basic velocity meter will assist with giving some feedback on this. Isometric- Add a 5-20 sec hold at the the highest tension point on either the first or last rep. Again this will focus on time under tension but a slightly different stimulus. Density or Rest manipulation - You can reduce the rest time between sets or have a time demand to get each set done to increase intensity. IMPORTANT - When manipulating rest, be sure you stick to the appropriate work:rest ratios for your given goal, and form should not be compromised for a faster finish. Ie: If your goals is strength, doing a set of 6 reps every minute isn’t going to work on the appropriate energy systems and physiological adaptations you are after. Generally speaking the lower the rep target the greater the rest should be.
